Pictured below is a vibrant Susan running the New York City Marathon in 2006 to raise money for cancer patients. Tragically, in February 2011 her cervical cancer returned with a vengeance. Unfortunately, even with the best of care, not everyone survives cancer. Susan Zabransky Hughes passed away in July.

The family described the care Susan received at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center as outstanding. “Everyone, the doctors, the nurses and even the transport people were such caring and competent people.” The Zabransky and Hughes families are committed to creating a lasting memorial for Susan at HackensackUMC in the expand-ed ETD, Susan’s Suite. Having a dedicated space and specialized staff will benefit patients with all types of cancer for years to come.

Sponsorship Opportunities to Build Susan’s Suite at HackensackUMC

Proceeds from the run will be donated directly to the HackensackUMC Foundation specifically for Susan’s Suite. Although a generous financial contribution has already been made by the Hughes and Zabransky fami-lies toward the $1 million goal, more funding is needed.

Sponsorship opportunities are available with varying levels of recognition and benefits including signage, publicity and invitations to the May 12, 2012 Thank You Party at the Designer Showhouse in Saddle River.

dedicated to cancer patients in theEmergency Trauma Department

Hackensack University Medical Center demonstrated its commitment to fighting cancer by recently opening a 155,000 square-foot comprehensive cancer care center that offers an unparalleled patient experience. The John Theurer Cancer Center’s mission is to provide the highest quality cancer care. However, not every cancer patient goes directly to the Cancer Center. At times and for vari-ous reasons, the point of entry is the Emergency Trauma Department (ETD).

As part of the future expansion of the ETD, the Medical Center recognized the need for specialized emergency rooms. Current plans include a 33,000 square-foot ex-pansion designed to improve operating efficiency and reduce delays in patient treatment. The renovation, ex-pected to be completed by 2013, will include more operat-ing rooms, new technologies and equipment, and feature four specialty sections for cardiac, cancer, geriatric and trauma emergency care.

The expanded design will separate patients by type and level of care needed, allowing patients rapid access to spe-cialized services, reducing wait times throughout the De-partment and resulting in an improved patient and family experience. The ETD will convert semi-private, curtained cubicles to fixed-wall private ones, which not only provide greater privacy, but will better accommodate these new technologies and equipment. This project will have an im-mediate and significant impact on emergency care in our community.

The Story Behind the Run

The run is being organized in honor of our dear friend, Susan Zabransky Hughes, who suc-cumbed to cervical cancer in July of 2011 at the age of 46. We were all touched by Sue in so many ways. Whether it was sharing her love of cooking, training at the gym, hiking at the Reservation, or vacationing, Sue just loved life and lived it to the fullest every day.

Sue had many passions in her life, and running was one of them. In trying to decide the best way to keep Sue’s spirit alive while simultane-ously raising money to fund Susan’s Suite at HackensackUMC, we decided to organize a 5k run/walk in Saddle River. We thought it fit-ting that the course include some of the same streets Sue ran on and where she lived while raising her family for 15 years. As an additional tribute, the course reaches into Upper Saddle River, where Sue grew up and her parents still reside. Post-race activities will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where Sue was a member of the congregation.
