The Peak Fire in Chatsworth Tuesday, and the current Lake Fire currently blazing near Lake Hughes, point out that fire season has exploded with the high temperatures and low humidity. Cal Fire Chief Lucas Spelman has told Valley News Group in a previous article that in California now, fire season is “all year long.”

L.A. Fire Department and insurance experts like Tim Gaspar are urging residents to clear all defensible space, have an emergency plan and be prepared. For more tips on how to be prepared, like copying important documents, keeping a ready evacuation bag and more, visit www.ready.gov.

A suspect arrested for public intoxication Tuesday somehow, in his inebriated state, managed to escape from the Malibu Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station in Calabasas. He pulled his successful stunt at approximately 1:43 am according to Deputy Tina Schrader of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. He was found not far from the station about 8 am. The man’s name or how he walked out of the station were not available at presstime.

Blumenfield Finding Shelter for Homeless in the Winnetka Underpass

Bringing new resources to the effort to shelter people living in the Winnetka underpass beneath the 101 freeway, Councilmember Bob Blumenfeld today announced a new pilot project to house unsheltered residents at that encampment, in partnership with. the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). During the pilot, LAHSA will identify service needs and housing/shelter resources for each of the estimated 24 people currently living at this location. The Winnetka underpass is one of several freeway locations that LAHSA has prioritized for rapid rehousing efforts. LAHSA is currently conducting a needs assessment for the people at Winnetka with a comprehensive and holistic analysis of what resources they need to be housed.

In the weeks following the assessment, outreach teams and housing navigators will connect encampment residents to the best and most immediate housing pathway solution.

I don’t know how I was out of the loop. Hadn’t heard about this.

A friend alerted to me to the addition, and it wasn’t until I checked it myself that I believed it.

Google and Apple have added a COVID tracker app to my phone.

I went into settings, privacy and health and there it was: COVID-19 Exposure Logging.

Turns out it has to be enabled by the user. When enabled, iPhones can exchange random ID’s with other devices using a Bluetooth. This enables the app to notify you if you may have been exposed to COVID-19.

Goggle said Exposure Logging cannot access any data in, or add any data to, the Health

app.Now you might get nervous

when you hear your mobile phone could be used for any kind of tracing.

I’m not sure what I am.On one hand I’m glad it’s

something I have control of - if I don’t activate it - it doesn’t work.

But if I do, the app would ping off other mobile phones I came in contact with. If I did come down with COVID-19, I could indicate it on the app, which would then notify the owners of the other devices I had c0me in contact with that I was potentially exposed.

Same with their phones.Contact tracing has been said

to be one of the biggest factors in “reopening” from the pandemic. That’s because new cases can be

isolated and identifying others who might have been exposed early enough can limit the spread.

Again, not sure how I feel about this, but Apple assures users that no personal information is exchanged, so they say the government isn’t tracking your information with this technology.

Again - not sure where I weigh in on this, just wanted to share in case you were as in the dark as much as I was.

Check out your phone and decide.

4/25/2016: “What if there were no City of Calabasas?” It took generations to get home rule — one to make a city and one to become successful. We’re 30 years into that dream and “changed the world.” We’ve pioneered and built commUNITY in Calabasas. “Home Rule” changed our lives and helped build a city that loves its lands, its trees, it vistas, its places and its people. We built strong ideals and finances, changed laws and planned an even better future.

If there were no City of Calabasas, would we have hundreds of acres of parks and open space? Would we have a Civic Center and Calabasas Library? Would we have recreation and senior centers? Would our roads be scenic, our trees protected, our skies darkened for the stars, our air protected from poisons? West Hills FirmDevelops COVID-19 Testfor Transplant Patients

West Hills based One Lamba, a subsidiary of Thermo Fisher Scientific, has developed a new COVID-19 test for organ transplant candidates and recipients.

The test, named LABScreen COVID Plus Assay, will detect COVID-1i9 antibodies in the body more accurately with software from Luminex of Texas.

“Transplant patients have unique needs compared to other COVID-19 patients, and with the support of Luminex and our research partners, we’re delivering an innovative solution that’s tailored to meet those needs, said Nicole Brockway, president of the transplant diagnostic division for Thermo Fisher, said in a statement.

The West Hills location has been working on the development, manufacture and storage of chemicals, instruments and software related to transplant diagnostics for a year. The test is available now for research and emergency use only.

“We believe the expertise with antibody assay development and commitment to the transplant community is critical to develop an assay for transplant patients that could both detect neutralizing antibodies and rule out false positives, “ said Dr. Howard Gebel of Emery’s HLA Lab.

Zoom Plays Sunday from West Valley Playhouse

Valley Cultural Center This Sunday Screens “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”

Valley Cultural Center will screen “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Skull” this Sunday evening at 8 pm. Special Emerging Artist Alice Howe will perform before the movie at 7:45 pm.

The 2008 American action-adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg is the fourth installment in the Indiana Jones

series. Released 19 years after the previous film, the film is set in 1957, pitting Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) against Soviet agents led by Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett)—searching for a telepathic crystal skull. Jones is aided by his former lover, Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), and her son, Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf). Ray Winstone, John

Hurt, and Jim Broadbent are also part of the supporting cast.

When Emerging Artist Alison Howe wants to unlock a memory or understand an emotion, she steps outside. “There’s something about the stillness,” she says. “When I’m sitting with my guitar and looking out at a forest or the ocean, I have the space to reflect to on people and places. My muse strikes.” Vistas and the faces and emotions they summon unfurl with compelling grace on “Visions,” Howe’s anticipated debut album. A modern love letter to ’60s and ’70s folk and timeless blues, “Visions” pays homage without succumbing to imitation, and offers an intimate snapshot of a young artist discovering her own power.

The movie and concert take place this Sunday evening, August 16, at the Disabled Veterans Hall, 6543 Corbin Avenue, Woodland Hills. For more information and a full schedule of upcoming movies and concerts visit valleycultural.org.

The West Valley Playhouse will present another round of their Zoom plays on Sunday, August 16, at 2:30 pm. Four exciting original 10-minute plays will be presented.

By Janey M. RifkinJust a few months ago, some

scientists and prognosticators saw safer times ahead maintaining that summer heat waves would likely tamp down Covid-19 transmission. However, following recent triple-digit temperatures, surges in new cases of the deadly disease continue to withstand the heat and deaths among sufferers multiply in the U.S. and around the world.

The hopeful prediction failed although studies have shown simulated sunlight can inactivate the virus on surfaces and in the air. As well, some of the other coronaviruses that have long circulated tend to peak in colder months and wane in summer. Immunity to Covid-19 in the population is still low, the experts said. (Model based on limited data available on SARS-COV-2.) They found seasonal changes became an important factor in

Information & Straight Talk

Coronavirus Outlasts Summertime Weather limiting spread only after a large part of the population became immune to the virus. (Think – common seasonal influenza.)

Originally, it was suggested that sunlight can inactivate the virus on contaminated surfaces, whereas scientists now indicate it isn’t common to contract Covid-19 that way. Instead, health agencies have identified respiratory droplets as the major mode of transmission - when a sick person coughs, sneezes or speaks, they expel large droplets. Infection through virus-containing aerosols is most likely to happen in poorly ventilated, indoor spaces, such places generally don’t get much sunlight.

Which brings up the most important factor: Human behavior trumps climate!

Wins Stroke Award Providence Tarzana Cedars-Sinai

has been recognized for quality care in treating patients suffering strokes. Standards are measured by the American Heart Association’s/American Stroke Association’s “Get With the Guidelines” awards program.

The Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award is given to hospitals that have experienced two or more consecutive years with a minimum 85% adherence with AHA/ASA achievement measure, and 75% on additional quality measures.

“We are employing the latest procedures and technology in order to extend the revolution in stroke care, which in many cases not only halts the stroke, but reverses its effects and restores function,” said Neil A. Martin, M.D., Executive Director of neurosciences for Providence Southern California. “Today, patients who not long ago were destined for a lifetime of disability, now can be treated in minutes, recover in hours and walk out of the hospital in days. In many cases, paramedics bypass other hospitals to get to one of our Providence Medical Centers because of the expertise that has gained them recognition as elite award-winning destination centers. Our stroke teams are focused on relentlessly pursuing improvements in care, so ever more patients can be saved.”

Tarzana Community Center Gets New Greenhouse for Children’s Teaching GardenCIT Group Inc. (CIT)

t has made a donation to Tarzana Community and Cultural Center (TCCC) for the construction of a greenhouse in the organization’s Children’s Teaching Garden, a community need identified by a customer of CIT’s Southern California retail bank OneWest Bank as part of the company’s Acts of Caring initiative.

CIT’s donation expedites TCCC’s plans to create a much-anticipated Children’s Teaching Garden featuring a greenhouse dedicated to teaching environmental sustainability

to young community members through planting and growing. Construction of the greenhouse will begin this summer, completing the Children’s Teaching Garden for when

TCCC is able to safely welcome the community back to its facility.

TCCC is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Tarzana through its park-like facility, providing a space for meetings, activities and programs that foster the arts, education and leadership, and promote environmental sustainability. “Our gardens serve as a community space

for our neighbors and partners, and we are constantly seeking ways to enhance our facility and expand our programming,” said Claire Bloom, executive director at TCCC. “
