The Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1978 by SheldonBair and is a community orchestra of professional and amateur volunteermusicians. TheOrchestra performsa subscription series of concerts everyyearinadditiontooutdoorandchambermusicconcerts.TheOrchestrahasperformedoperaandballet,aswellasstandardorchestralrepertoire,andisknownforitspremieresofnewworksandperformancesofunusualrepertoire.

Music DirectorSheldon Bair is the Founder and Music Director of the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra(Maryland), a community orchestra of over80 members. He holds a Bachelor’s degreefrom Elizabethtown College (Pennsylvania)wherehestudiedconductingwithOtisKitchenand composition with James McVoy andDarrell Douglas, and a Master’s degree fromTowson University (Maryland). In addition,his postgraduate studies include classes atWestminster Choir College in Princeton, NewJersey. Sheldon Bair has studied conductingwith Witold Rowicki in Vienna, and MarcMostovoy,WilliamHudson,andLeonidGrin.

Bair isadjunct faculty forHarfordCommunityCollege, ison theconductingstafffortheElizabethtownCollegeMusicCamp,andisofteninvitedtoconductandadjudicateyouthorchestrasandsoloists. InNovember2000,Bairwasbestowed the Paderewski Award for Contributions to Society and Cultureat thePolishEmbassy inWashington,D.C.Hehasconductedorchestras inTexas,Oklahoma,andToronto,Canada.BairparticipatedintheSixthMalcolmArnoldFestivalinNorthampton,UK,inthefallof2011byintroducingArnold’s9thSymphonyatthefinalGalaConcert.

Bair,amemberofASCAP,haswrittenanumberofworksforstudentstringorchestraandchurchchoir.

InJune2016,MaestroBairretiredfromHarfordCountyPublicSchoolsafter40yearsofmusicmakingwithyoungmusicians.Inretirement,BairhastakentheopportunitytospeakabouttheSSOwithlocalcommunityorganizations.Baircontinues tocomposeandhas recentlycompletedaworkcommemoratingAPG’s 100th Anniversary. The work, entitled “ThisWe’llDefend,”willbeperformedattheSSO’sJune4,2017alfrescoconcert.He isalsoworkingonanewwork for this year’sHolidayConcert!Bair volunteersatthelocalradiostationWHFC91.1FMwherehehastheWednesdaymorning,9-noon,classicalshow.

Our Guest PerformersTerry Trouyet, a 43-year radio broadcast veteran, iscurrentlytheOperationsManageratradiostationWHFC-FM. A well-known voice in the Baltimore market, hehasworkedwithboth commercial andnoncommercialstations,includinglocalnewsanchorfortheTomJoynerShowandotherMetroTrafficNetworkaffiliates.

A Baltimore native, Terry was Operations Managerfor WVIE-AM for 10 years. He was Assistant General Manager, Director ofBroadcast Operations, and Chief Operator for WJHU-FM, Johns HopkinsUniversityforsixyears.HewasDirectorofCommunityAffairsfortheAmericanRadioSystemsBaltimoreclusterforthreeyears.HewasdirectlyresponsibleforproducingpublicaffairsprogrammingforstationsWQSR-FM,WWMX-FM,WOCT-FM,WBGR-AM,andWBMD-AM.

Stillisrecognizedasthe“DeanofAfro-AmericanComposers”aswellasoneofAmerica’sforemostcomposers.HewasborninMississippitoparentswhowereteachers,andincidentally,musicians.Hisfatherdiedwhenhewasonlyafewmonthsold,butleftalegacythatwasusedlatertohelpfinancestudiesatOberlinConservatory.

ChildhoodspentinLittleRock,Arkansasincludedviolinlessonsandinspirationfromoperaticrecordingsboughtforhimbyhisstepfather.HelaterattendedcollegeinOhioatWilberforceUniversitystudyingtobecomeadoctor,anideaofhismother.Stillspentmostofhistimeconductingtheband,learninghowto play various instruments, and making initial attempts to compose andorchestrate. Abandoning medical studies, he enrolled at Oberlin using hisfather’slegacy,andlaterbyscholarshipestablishedforhimbythefaculty.

TheworksofWilliamGrantStill includemore thanonehundredorchestralworks,fivesymphonies,sixoperas,fourballets,andmanyworksforchorus,soloinstruments,andvoice.

Graingerwasbornintoadysfunctionalfamilyin1882inMelbourne,Australia.Unabletoacceptablysocializewithotherchildren,hismother,Rose,home-schooled him. He was highly intelligent and showed remarkable talent inmusicaswellashisotherstudies.(Asanadulthewascomfortableinelevendifferentlanguages.)Toescapefromherabusivehusband,RosemovedtheyoungPercytoFrankford,GermanysohecouldattendtheHochConservatorytofurtherdevelophismusicaltalents.LatertheymovedtoLondonwherehestudiedwithGriegandDeliusandperformedasaconcertpianist.

Through Grieg, Grainger developed an interest in folk music and traveledthroughoutEnglandrecordingfolksongsonwaxcylindersthatcouldonlyholdtwominutesofmusic,butweretheonlyrecordingequipmentavailableatthetime.Manyofhisbestworksarearrangementsofthesesongs.

In1914,GraingerandRosemovedtotheUnitedStatesandsettlednorthofNewYorkCitywhere, in1919,hebecameacitizen;however,Australiastillclaimshimasoneoftheirown.Althoughhewasanaccomplishedpianisthedidnotenjoypublicperformances.ForatimehewasaprofessorandheadofthemusicdepartmentatNewYorkUniversity.

The Irish Tune from County Derry, later to be known as “Danny Boy,” wascollectedbyaMissJ.RossinCountyDerryinwhatisnowNorthernIreland.ShesentthetunetoGeorgePetriewhopublishedacollection,“TheAncientMusicofIreland,”inDublinin1855.Grainger’sfirstsettingofthetunewasas an a cappellachoralworkin1909,butheeventuallymadeeightdifferentversionsofitincludingsolopiano,windband,andorchestralstringswithtwohorns.Eachofthemanyversionsaremagnificent.

MalcolmArnoldwasamusicallygifted trumpeterandcomposerwhocouldbethegregarious“lifeoftheparty”(usuallyatthepub),withalivelysenseofhumorandextremegenerosity.Havingbeenadoublemajor(trumpetandcomposition) during college and performing years, he had also composedalmost twentyconcertpiecesandhadbegunwritingfilmanddocumentaryscores.Hewrote132filmscoresbetween1947and1980.Thefilmmoneyallowedhimtogiveupthetrumpetandbecomeafulltimecomposer.Writingforfulllengthfeaturefilmssoonfollowedaswellascommissionsfor“serious”orchestralworks.

The years1948 to1960werehismostproductiveperiod inbothfilmandconcertmusic.Duringonethree-yearperiodhewrotescoresforfifteenmajorfilms,earningabout(bytoday’sstandards)250,000to300,000poundsperfilm.HewonanOscarforThe Bridge on the River Kwai(1958)andaNovelloAwardforThe Inn of the Sixth Happiness(1960).Arnoldwasoneofthemajorcomposersofthemid-to-late20thcentury,havingwrittenninesymphonies,

TheArnoldsmovedfromLondontoCornwallinEngland’sextremesouthwest,inparttoremoveMalcolmfromtheallureofLondon’smanypubs.However,hequicklybecameapopular“regular” in thenew localpubs.Padstow isasmalltownonCornwall’snorthwestcoastwhereanewlifeboatstationwastobededicatedbytheDukeofKent.Arnoldcomposedthismarchin1967,tobeplayedbythelocalbrassband,forthededicationceremony.ThenewstationisneartheTrevoselighthousewithadistinctivefoghorn,asoundthatArnoldutilizedinthemarchtogreateffect.Thereisamiddlesectioninthemarchthat suggests the dangers tomariners and those who are called upon torescuethem.Atthededication,theperformancewasbytheSt.DennisSilver,whosedirectorhanded thebaton toArnold toconduct.According toPhillipHunt:“Followingtheformalitieshetookthewholebandintothenearestpubandtreatedthemtoseveralroundsofdrinks,ensuringthatthemarchwaswellandtruly launched inawaythebandmembershavenever forgotten.”Inaninterviewin1984,Arnoldstated,“Ofallmybrassandbandpieces,itisPadstow LifeboatwhichIlikebest.”
