Thanks to all of you 2016 was another banner year as we work towards being as sustainable as possible. All of the Sustainability projects hap-pen on site from revenue is generated by you all, the FANS! We continue to be impressed and humbled at the high rate at which you all opt in to support these site-wide projects.

We tackled a number of projects this year but we were really excited to work with our operations team out in the campgrounds on Vac Toilets. Toilets might not be sexy but they sure make the world a better place! Vac Toilet are awesome because they save up to 90% on water, both on supply and drainage. The fold-able system can also be stacked, which helps reduce our transport carbon footprint of the toilets too.

In 2017 we hope to bring you more and bigger improvements while continuing some of our favorites like the BonnaROOTS dinners and the Refill Revolution! Our wheels are turning and we can’t wait to make 2017 on the farm better and more sustainable.

Here are a few highlights from 2016..

• HeadCount has been a critical mainstay of the music industry at large and has been at Bonnaroo for years. With their more than 5,000 events they set an all-time record for voter registrations for a single event at Bonnaroo this year with over 1,200 people registering to vote.

• To Write Love on Her Arms, a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for those struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide had a number of impactful interactions with you all. Here is just one incredible story they shared with us:

Our friend Q runs Soberoo and posted an RSVP prompt that read “If I can do it, then so can you.” A few days later a young woman happened by the booth with her friend. I explained the campaign and she took to browsing the cards. She saw

Q’s note and pointed it out her friend and I told her that she could take it if she liked. She said, “no, I don’t think that one is for me. I’m a bit off the wagon currently.” After looking around a bit more, she came back to the note, plucked it off the line and said, “Actually you know what? Maybe this is what I needed.” That’s the magic of showing up places like Bonnaroo. You never know who is going to have their first Day 1 or their Day 1 for the fifth time.

• In the Academy, a teaching artist from The Porch, a writers collective from Nashville, guided Bonnaroovians in a workshop to identify and depict strong images from lived experiences, ones that may then act as launching points for new work. Lots of great new work came out of the session, below you can read one sample of a beautiful poem, “I Know”, by Mythili Sanikommu.

This has become one of our signature programs thanks to our partners Plastic Pollution Coalition and Steelys Drinkware. Steelys helped us practice what we preach with a donation of cups and water bottles to our huge staff so the Revolution was happening backstage as well! As a means of continuing and broadening the conversation about reducing plastic consumption, our Director of Sustainability joined the Plastic Pollution Coalition at Eco-SXSW this for a panel to spread the gospel. Viva la Refill Revolution!

Cleaning up after a big party is always a challenge. The Clean Vibes team tack-les this task each year with grace and dedication. The numbers are astounding. In 2016 we diverted 65% of all waste by weight from the landfill. We’ll let the rest of the numbers speak for themselves.

This 100% volunteer run program expands its reach each year whether it’s collecting more food or collecting from more sources on site. This year we expanded the program to work with Sysco, one of our large food distributors on site. See the team in action and learn more here.

Grundy County Food Bank used this donated food to provide meals for over 200 fami-lies and to many needy organizations in the Grundy County area on a weekly basis. To-go meals are created with the already prepared food and the raw food is distributed at the same time during weekly pick up’s at the Food Bank.

Our Solar Stage programming with Heritage Radio and The Brooers University continues to be a place to shine the spotlight on the great strides craft brewers are making in the world of sustainability – AND, like its namesake, it’s completely solar powered! We were also excited to welcome Intel to the stage where they discussed ways to turn pas-sion into advocacy. Heritage Radio played an incredible game of “Never Have I Ever” with fans and celebrated food personalities that put the theory to test that food professionals really do have the most fun. The Brooers Uni-versity team talked about all the experiments and new frontiers being explored in sustain-able brewing. And thanks to our amazing team of teachers, hundreds of people started each day with some refreshing yoga.
