EcoVadis GoldLeading by example is very important to ORTEC. Therefore, we are proud to announce that in October 2018 we achieved the EcoVadis gold rating with our Corporate Social Responsibility efforts. We now belong to the top 1% of companies within the field of Computer programming, consultancy and related activities, and to the top 4% of all the thousands of companies assessed by EcoVadis.
United Nations Global CompactThis publication is reporting over 2017. In the present report we would like to give account of the results we booked concerning sustainability, in both economic, environmental and social aspect. In October 2017, we joined the largest sustainability initiative in the world: the UN Global Compact. In addition to the annual sustainability report for our stakeholders, we have committed to uploading a public report on our efforts in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption every year.
ORTEC and SustainabilitySustainability is at the heart of our organization and has been ORTEC’s raison d’être since its foundation in 1981. ORTEC has a strong commitment to its employees and customers, and also to the future of society and the world we live in. Using our passion for mathematics, we truly have a sustainable impact across the globe. All activities ORTEC undertakes, contribute to one of the three pillars of sustainability;

This year’s sustainability report is a step forward in our efforts to include all the ORTEC offices. From this year on, we will fully report on the German offices in Heidelberg and Bremen. Next to that the USA business unit took their first steps in sustainable reporting by supplying their flight data and community initiatives for use in this report.
Gathering all the relevant data for reports like this one, from our different offices worldwide, takes some time. However, we will strive to publish our 2018 sustainability report earlier in the year. This publication over 2017 adheres to GRI guidelines and reports the following indicators: EC1, EC3-4, LA1, LA3-, LA10-11, EN3-4, EN8, EN15-19, EN23, EN30
Sustainability Report 2017
Pension fundThe coverage ratio of ORTEC’s pension fund totalled up to 103,7% at the end of 2017. The policy coverage ratio totalled up to 103,2%. This means that Stichting ORTEC Pensioenfonds (SOP) ended the year with a funding deficit, but one that is substantially smaller than at the beginning of the year.
2017 was a very good year for ORTEC. A year in which a lot has happened; some changes in our organizational structure and senior management, the introduction of our new brand vision, the launch of our ‘strategy into action’ program as well as several improvement initiatives across the globe.
Even more important, we have enhanced our solution suite, provided excellent support to our customers, finished a lot of (sometimes challenging) projects and also further extended our customer base, resulting in an increased impact on the world. ORTEC was able to grow in revenues with 11% to 94 Million Euros in 2017, while improving our profitability. EBITDA increased to 14.3 Million Euros and EBIT increased to 4.4 Million Euro in 2017. These results clearly show we are on track to reach our long term goals.

Greenhouse gas reduction progress
ORTEC measures its CO2 footprint since 2014,
starting with our operations in the Netherlands
(which covers 2/3rd of our total emissions), and
since then expanding to our other offices around
the globe. Our global goal is a 20% reduction
of CO2 emissions in 2020, versus 2014. In the
Netherlands specifically, we aim for a 30%
reduction, and already reached a 26% reduction
in 2017. Since 2017, ORTEC NL recycles waste,
including cradle-to-cradle (circular) treatment
of paper waste in our offices. We also stimulate
sustainable transportation by installing more
electric vehicle charging stations, offer more
opportunity for use of public transport and the
use of bikes. Our German offices Heidelberg
and Bremen switched to green electricity in
2017. In September 2017, all ORTEC-employees
had the opportunity to have their cars washed
in Zoetermeer by Greenest Carwash. Greenest
Carwash uses a maximum of 5 liters of water,
saving up to 150 liters drinking water per wash.
They donate 1 euro per wash to charity.

As the core of our work is to optimize our customers’ worlds, our main environmental contribution can be found in the reduction of our customers’ environmental footprints. Even so, we also enjoy optimizing our own energy and material use. ORTEC reached the EcoVadis silver ratingin 2014. In 2017, we prolonged that rating (assessment in 2016).
Our Energy Management System has been reviewed and approved for the third time in December 2017 by an external auditor and meets the CO2 performance ladder requirements version 3.0. This certification enforces our commitment to sustainability and is valid until December 2018. In October 2017, ORTEC joined the UN Global Compact initiative.

De KoekfabriekDe Koekfabriek is a collaboration between the Reinaerde health care organization and some Utrecht hospitality entrepreneurs. Every day people with a mental disability bake delicious biscuits under the guidance of professional pastry bakers. This way they have meaningful daytime activities and a place in the middle of society. ORTEC offers these fresh, delicious, but also social cookies to its employees in all pantries at the various locations in Amsterdam, Groningen and Zoetermeer.

Diversity and equalityORTEC strongly believes in the value of diversity and equality. In 2017, ORTEC has worked on raising awareness about that. The percentage of women keeps on increasing. When looking at the young ORTEC employees, the current number of women is well above 35%. Our goal remains: 35% women for all employee levels. The goal for 2020, having 2+ women in higher management, was already reached this year. Recent research confirmed no discrimination in the working place, market-conformity in wages, and no wage differences between men and women.
People are ORTEC’s most important asset. We want our people to be healthy and happy in their jobs. That is why we offer our people flexible ways of working (‘Het Nieuwe Werken’) and a solid remuneration package with plenty opportunities for personal development.
Education and continuous development are key assets and we actively stimulate employees to broaden their skills. Sports activities are regularly being organized to support healthy living and free fruit is available in all offices. The results of our quarterly employee satisfaction surveys allow us to quickly adapt to any input from our employees, and are a source for development of our educational offer.
