Why does REWE Group need Biodiversity?

5

Assurance of Production and Supply − Genetic diversity: i.e. TR4-funghus threatens 80% of banana production world

wide− Endagered species: i.e. declinig fishing ressources− Ecosystemic performance: i.e. creating value by pollination

Sustainability and Shareholder Value− Regular documentation and reporting of sustainability as basis for financial

credibility.

Positive Perception by Customers and Employees− Emotional communication of complex issues− Identification with the company

Social Responsibility: REWE Group Guidelines and principles

„3. Wildlife Conservation and Biodiversity:Natural ecosystems must be preserved and protected.

Therefore we support the goals of the UN-Convention on Biological Diversity, CBD“

Thuna: − From sustainable sources?

Cheese: − Dairy products without GMO-soya from

Brasil?

Wheat: − Intensive Monoculture?

Tomatoes: − Pesticides?

Managing supply chains:

2. Supporting sustainable consumption in the mass-

market by Labeling with the

PRO PLANET-Label

More Biodiversity Projects:

Biodiversity Projects

Biodiversity projects should have a direct correlation to production and

support farm management activities. In this case, they are no

greenwashing and can be used as communicative tools.

Roses from KeniaEnviromental production management & renaturation ofriperian land for water cleaning and biodiversity

Grapes from ItalyEnviromental production management (water, pesticide reduction) Flowering areas and hedgerows

Bananas from Panama and Costa RicaEnviromental certificationReforestation program, „Biodiversity Partnership Mesoamerica“

Page 15: Sustainability strategy of REWE Group€¦ · − Emotional communication of complex issues − Identification with the company Social Responsibility: REWE Group Guidelines and principles

− i.e.: MSC, FSC, Rainforest Alliance, Bio

− Guideline for consumer

− Independent control

− Can be integrated into standards quality management

15

With up to 50.000 different articles in a german supermarket, sustainabilitycan only be achieved and managed by standards and certificates:

Sustainability criteria as part of product specification

Biodiversity Standards

Page 16: Sustainability strategy of REWE Group€¦ · − Emotional communication of complex issues − Identification with the company Social Responsibility: REWE Group Guidelines and principles

16

− Major differences in number and quality of criteria

− Standards not always use international accepted criteria and definition

Problems of Existing standards:

Biodiversity Standards

Challenge: Development of suitable biodiversity

criteria for the food industry
