Contamination Cleaning SolutionsBusiness and Industry Today is delighted to present a

profile of SpillAway Projects as our Company of the Month.

Established in 2006 and based in South Oxfordshire, SpillAway Projects are a leading, stocking distributor for bio-remedial products which are used in areas contaminated with hydrocarbons and/or Fats Oils and Greases (FOG). From small spills to highly contaminated industrial sites for development the SpillAway Brand product range has products to help clean-up and decontaminate through bioremediation.

Bioremediation is a natural process which has been harnessed in the SpillAway Brand™ product range to provide a solution to contamination by hydrocarbons and FOG. In the natural world micro-organisms are present which will biodegrade hydrocarbons and other contaminants and digest them. However, depending on how big the spill of oil and the amount of the right type of bacteria present, this process can take an extremely long time. The SpillAway Brand™ products enhance the bioremediation process by supplying the right bacteria to the site of the contamination in a large enough quantity to speed up the process, eradicating

or reducing the contamination to an acceptable and safe level in a relatively short period of time.

The highly efficient and experienced team at SpillAway have been working closely with customers and consultants to provide effective solutions which are cost-effective, simple to apply and have minimal

disruption on the environment. As the main distributor of SpillAway Brand products outside US, SpillAway holds stock at its South Oxfordshire location allowing for the quick despatch of product. Customers are supported with up-to-date product and stock information, credit terms for payment, application advice and on-site support where required for large remediation projects.

SpillAway Projects support customers from a wide range of industries – notably, aviation, marine, engineering, food processing, land remediation, oil and gas – for contamination, spill problems and maintenance. Where off-the-shelf products are not been the answer, SpillAway can work with customers to create a bespoke solution. This solution might be a blend of bacteria so the product will bio-remediate hydrocarbons and FOG, an example being FKA Kleen

which was produced for as a galley cleaner/degreaser for a well-known airline. Other solutions have been to change the physicality of the product – from a liquid to a solid – or to provide the product in more suitable packaging – in a cartridge for a dosing unit. SpillAway have the flexibility to work with customers to get the right solution.

The bio-remedial cleaner/degreaser products in the SpillAway range are great favourites. Provided as concentrates, they have a long shelf life until diluted with water ready for use. They are simple to use and, unusually for this category of product, they smell nice! FleetKleen™ is used for cleaning floors and bioremediation of hydrocarbon, it is typically used on floors of warehouses, hangars, yards etc. The benefit of the bio-remedial element is that the hydrocarbons are degraded and digested, making the surface less slippery and improving with every application. Overtime, when used as part of a regular maintenance programme, the dilution rates can be dramatically reduced improving FleetKleen’s cost-effectiveness.

When asked to differentiate other distributors in the industry Jon Swain, SpillAway Projects’ MD, explained, “Our focus is on bio-solutions which have the least possible impact on our environment, this often requires explanation and trials as the bio-technology involved in

the products isn’t known or understood. So the service we provide is in addition to the usual price, availability and convenience, we need to persuade potential customers of cost benefits – both economic and environmental – of switching to bio-remedial products for contamination clean-up. We help set up trials and give advice on specific projects so the customer can be sure of a good result.” Moving forward, SpillAway Projects want to extend their range with bio-remedial products addressing new industrial contamination areas.

If you would like to find out more about SpillAway Projects amazing bio-remedial products, contact the group today. More information can be found on their website listed below:

Specify sustainably with high performance trade paintsEcopro trade paints have made

it easy to improve a project’s sustainability.

The paint you specify can have a positive or negative impact on a project’s sustainability: not just its environmental ratings but, most importantly, whether it will safeguard or damage the fabric of a building for the future.

Conventional acrylic based paints prevent a wall from breathing, which can lead to moisture damage such as blown plaster and the need for future remedial work.

On the other hand, durable, Ecopro paints can prevent such damage and significantly reduce the maintenance lifecycle of walls.

Advanced technologyDesigned specifically for the trade, Earthborn’s Ecopro paints guarantee the highest environmental and quality

standards. Their unique formulations deliver minimal VOCs, environmental accreditation and outstanding performance, often superior to that of conventional acrylic based paints. They are easy to use and cover well.

Ecopro Emulsion is available with a Matt or Lo Sheen finish. Matt has excellent covering power and is

especially useful for new plaster. Lo Sheen’s wipeability and greater resistance to marking makes it suitable for higher traffic areas. Both have excellent covering properties, are hardwearing and made in all 100 BS4800 colours.

Ecopro Eggshell is ideal for woodwork or interior walls and ceilings. It dries quickly to a flexible finish that provides durability, washability and scuff resistance. Available in all BS4800 colours, its attractive sheen will not fade or discolour with time.

New build: Downs Merrifield ArchitectsDowns Merrifield Architects aimed for maximum sustainability on this new build. They chose Ecopro Matt Emulsion because of its eco credentials and durability. Here, white painted walls pick up a warm glow from the timber stairs, doors and flooring.

Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning News

Towering performanceRecent advances in our understanding of how

heat networks work have shed new light on how to make them better. Richard Hanson-Graville explains.

For some years, there has been an increasing use of centralised boiler plants, particularly in high-rise properties. The advantages of removing gas boilers from properties and making use of high efficiency centralised boiler plants are numerous.

However, heat networks are only as efficient as the heat interface units (HIUs) to which they connect. HIUs provide domestic hot water and central

heating in properties connected to a district heating system using a central boiler.

One of the biggest problems with HIUs and district heating in general – especially in high rise applications – is heat loss. To ensure that hot water is available without delay, HIUs draw a trickle flow of hot water from the primary supply to overcome heat losses and, in nearly all cases, this runs continuously.

The implications of this continuous heat loss is most keenly felt in properties fitted with pre-pay systems, where users can find their remaining

credit drain away needlessly when the property is unoccupied. Designers have focused a great deal of effort ensuring every possible step is taken to solve this key problem.

One way to reduce heat loss is to insulate the units. Heat losses of under 2W are available, making the drain on energy use less than 1 pence per day.

Another way to reduce losses is to allow the system

to go cold when not in use. Many electronic HIUs provide an optional ‘economy mode’ whereby the HIU will go cold after one hour of inactivity, significantly reducing energy consumption.

The final way to reduce heat losses, on the district system as a whole, is to run the network at lower temperatures, typically 65°C flow and 35°C return, with very low temperature drop across the plates.

Multi-pass heat exchangers are used to ensure these types of temperature drops can be achieved, while maintaining turbulent flow across the range of outputs.

At the core of the revolution in HIUs is the shift from mechanical systems to electronic. The ability of electronic systems to deploy advanced control strategies, using just the one valve per circuit, enables systems to become more advanced without the need to add more and more valves (or valve components).

The introduction of electronics also enables networked communications. It allows remote management of settings, remote fault alarming, and holistic heat network functionality. There is usually all the hardware already in place to allow this networking to take place, in the form of a building system. The real breakthrough that has been made in the HIUs, enabled by the use of electronics, is the way the systems manage the volumes and times that primary heat is drawn, in order to manage the heat network in its entirety.

Electronic HIUs are proven to be reliable. Indeed, electronic control actually makes systems more

reliable. There are fewer mechanical components and valve seals that are known to be where failures occur.

There is also a new UK standard against which manufacturers and specifiers can be challenged. It has already been signed up to by the government, utility companies and manufacturers, and is rapidly gaining momentum.

Vectaire: Ventilation specialistVectaire’s range of MVHRs – vertical and

horizontal – are all low energy products with EC motors and are manufactured using the latest technologies to ensure both optimum ventilation and air quality combined with low noise levels, running costs and excellent SFP ratings. They can now be commissioned via an LCD screen. The upright whole house heat recovery units – the Midis and the Maxis – offer the option of either an integral LCD or a remote LCD commissioning unit, whilst the in-line EVO250 and Mini can be commissioned using the remote unit. Thus, the commissioning engineer can easily adjust detailed unit functions including, for example, the trickle, purge and boost speeds for each motor, the length of the boost speed over-run time, the time delay before the boost speed kicks in holiday mode and night-time boost inhibitor times. The user can see the speed at which the fan is operating, the relative humidity etc. and when the filters need replacing. The user can also set the unit to holiday mode for energy saving when the dwelling is not occupied. These units are all manufactured in our Andover factory to ISO9001.

STULZ introduces the new range of air handling unitsThe CyberHandler 2 series

is used for air conditioning everything from data centres to hotels, from commercial buildings to industrial sites.

As power densities increase, a new design factor is coming to the fore-precision air conditioning solutions. Air handling units (AHU) incorporate all the air conditioning equipment of a data centre in one outdoor container, therefore creating more space for productive IT systems inside the actual server area. STULZ introduced its first air handling system back in 2015. With the CyberHandler 2, the specialist for reliable air conditioning solutions is now launching a comprehensively redesigned successor.

The CyberHandler 2 series includes eleven output ratings from 30 to 520kW. It combines free cooling, adiabatic cooling and mechanical chilling in one sealed outdoor container. The choice of chilling methods includes chilled water coils, scroll compressors or a redundant DX system with external condenser. If high availability is required, a fully weather-independent air conditioning

system with a high level of redundancy can be designed, and can work in mixed mode for great energy efficiency.

One of the key new features of this series is the optimised dual brazed plate heat exchanger. This improves the mean efficiency of the overall system, enabling a larger distance between flaps which reduces air-side pressure drops, and slashes the average energy consumption of the fan units. Another new feature is the design of the brazed plate heat exchanger module and the floor pan of the filtering section. In the new series, both these areas are made entirely of stainless steel.

Monitoring & Detection NewsIndustrial measurement provider turns on first units

Vaisala, a global leader in environmental and industrial measurement, is working with power

utilities, maintenance providers and asset owners to bring the first commercial units of its OptimusTM DGA Monitor for Transformers online. In recent months, Vaisala has delivered Optimus units to various customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the Americas and Asia.

As transformer fleets age, the likelihood of faults increases. Real-time condition monitoring enables asset owners to identify and address potential issues before they result in costly failure, reducing maintenance costs and boosting production and performance. The OptimusTM DGA Monitor brings a number of practical, time-saving and cost-saving benefits to the table that will dramatically improve

transformer maintenance and minimise power plant disruption.

Vaisala Optimus monitors transformer oil for the presence of moisture and seven different gases. By tracking real-time levels of different gases, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the condition of the transformer.

The infrared sensor technology used in the Optimus has been developed in-house by Vaisala, benefitting from decades of industrial measurement expertise. Most significantly, Optimus uses vacuum gas extraction and hermetically sealed and protected optics to completely eliminate the false alarms of the kind that frequently afflict on-site DGA systems. Optimus ensures high-quality gas selectivity through its use of vacuum gas extraction, which operates regardless of oil temperature or gas pressure, and by employing spectral scanning to aid selectivity.

Flame Detection with a big difference!Analytical Technology is proud

to announce a new product to their Gold Standard of gas detection. ATi’s new combination of Flame and Gas Detection Systems allows a one-stop solution to customer requirements, including a full installation and commissioning package.

The ATi301-V is a self-contained CCTV Flame Detector, with false alarm immunity and incident recording for post analysis.

If a fire can be seen by the naked eye, then this detector will work. As it doesn’t rely on traditional heat detection like Infra-Red or Ultra Violet, it will trigger through glass and windscreens welding, grinding and sunlight will not cause false alarms. With traditional infra-red detectors, rain and mist can reduce

detection performance, meaning alarms may not trigger.

However, this does not happen with the ATi301-V as it works within the visual light spectrum. The ATi301-V

also sends live video streaming for remote viewing- a bonus for seeing what’s going on prior to entry. In addition, ATi has developed wire-free video transmission, which can be viewed on a smartphone.

Developed for the harsh Oil and Gas Industry as an ATEX Zone 1 approved and SIL rated performance device, both explosive and safe area situations are covered. If coupled with ATI’s unique self-checking AutoTest Gas Detection devices, there is no application that cannot be covered. Please contact [email protected] at Ati UK for further information, advice or a site survey.

Fogmaker: The market leader in Europe for Automated Fire SuppressionFogmaker is a global market leader for

automated fire suppression having recently celebrated the supply of their 100,000th system. The patented water mist technology has become the system of choice for many vehicle manufacturers throughout the World due to its superior firefighting capabilities. Fogmaker attacks all three components of the chain reaction that causes a fire – Heat, Oxygen and Fuel. Not all thermal incidents develop into a fire and it is as much the aim of the Fogmaker system to detect and warn the operator of such incidents as well as suppressing an actual fire. The system is designed to work independently of the equipment’s own power supply to ensure it is ready to perform whatever the situation. The system has been tested and passed by the most stringent regulatory bodies and has recently been awarded the United Nations UNECE-R107 in addition to a long list of accreditations previously acquired worldwide.

Fogmaker is used wherever there is a high standard of Fire Suppression protection requirement and will be found in locations such as the Crossrail project, the

Channel Tunnel and major cargo ports around the globe. In the UK and Ireland we have over 10,000 installations and have a dedicated network to support this volume of systems.

Big Green Trommel Screen!

British manufacturer Firstgrade Recycling Systems has been a regular exhibitor at the RWM exhibition

for the past 15 years.

On their stand, Firstgrade had a large Static Trommel Screen with a 2.5m diameter, 7.2m long barrel. “The model T254 is built for the heaviest duties, with high throughput and minimal maintenance required,” says

Alan Valentine of Firstgrade. “This Trommel Screen has punched plate screens with 80mm diameter round holes, and is designed for use on heavy C&D waste.”

Firstgrade manufacture Trommels from 1.2m to 2.5m diameter, and 2.5m to 12m long. Screen hole sizes are available from 5mm to 300mm to suit a wide variety of applications.

At RWM 17, Firstgrade also launched their new Disc Screen, which is designed for removal of oversize items (typically over 100mm), from a waste stream, prior to further processing.

“Screening at a large hole size can be difficult using conventional screens.” says Mr Valentine. “As large items easily block or peg in large holes, while long thin items can easily pass through. This is why we have developed the Disc Screen.”

Delta’s Fast EV Charging and Battery Energy Storage SolutionsDelta, a

global leader in power and thermal management solutions, announced today its fast electric vehicle (EV) charging technology and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) are supporting Greenway’s GridBooster stations in Bratislava, Slovakia. This innovative infrastructure consists of two EV Chargers and one is from Delta Fast EV Charger, with capacity of 50kW currently, but scalable up to 150kW and a BESS that can store 52kWh of energy and dispense up to 60kW of power to efficiently manage its impact on the electricity grid. High system efficiency is facilitated through our DEEMS (Delta Efficient Energy Management Solutions) platform, which oversees the available grid power and communicates with the BESS and EV chargers. This success case demonstrates the unique capabilities of Delta’s diversified solutions in assisting smart grid infrastructure for sustainable cities.

The project was installed at the Avion Shopping Mall in Bratislava, Slovakia earlier this year. Key to the success of the project is the unique modularity of Delta’s Fast EV Charger. If the operator of the EV charger wants to increase the power from fast charging to ultra-fast, the simple introduction of additional modules permits possible expansion in 10kW steps from 50 to 150kW DC (belonging to the highest commercially available DC chargers on the market).

Conventional fast-charging stations draw their electricity directly from the energy grid. However, this new system draws energy from either the BESS or the grid, or both. Moreover, the battery can be recharged from the grid during lower-price off-peak hours, or from a local renewable source such as solar panels. The DEEMS platform monitors energy from the grid and provides a boost from the BESS whenever needed.

BWT: Best Water TechnologyBWT AQA Total Energy is a unique

alternative to more conventional drinking water treatment systems.

Unlike other treatment systems, BWT AQA Total Energy does not remove beneficial minerals from the water. Instead the system reverses the polarity of scale particles and forms nano-crystals which force the limescale to stay in solution and reduces deposits. A unique homogenous protective layer forms on the inside of pipes protecting them from corrosion.

BWT AQA Total Energy is so effective that it is one of very few physical water conditioners that meet the requirements of DVGW-W512. This is a stringent German standard for testing

the effectiveness of equipment in reducing the build-up of limescale.

As BWT AQA Total Energy works without chemicals, the water remains potable, safe for drinking and cooking. The absence of chemicals or salt frees up storage space, reduces manual handling and the risk of leaks and spillages. Whilst the time, traditionally spent on the maintenance of ancillary equipment is freed up for alternative tasks.

For the best chemical-free, low maintenance, environmentally friendly drinking water solution, call us on: +44 (0)1494 838100 and find out more about BWT AQA Total Energy and its unique 3-phase technology.

ECD Chloride Water Quality SensorThe measurement of water quality is

critical in many different industries including food and beverage, water and wastewater, oil and gas and chemical along with many others. It can be important to understand and record the levels of various parameters and also control the level of chemicals in a solution. Bell Flow Systems were approached to provide a solution to monitor the level of chloride in a stream and to transmit this data to control dosing to maintain a set concentration. Using equipment manufactured by Electro Chemical Devices we were able to provide a chloride sensor married with a digital transmitter offering an accurate, reliable and user friendly package.

The T80 transmitter has been designed as a universal transmitter to accept various

different sensors for pH, ORP, dissolved oxygen, specific ion, conductivity or resistivity

measurement and has two channels to simultaneously measure two different parameters. The transmitter allowed the user to read the measured values, which could be viewed graphically, as a percentage of the 4-20mA scaling or as the measured value and also to use a 4-20mA output to control the dosing and maintain an accurate chloride concentration. Relay outputs are also used to trigger alarms when specified values were reached. The transmitter also offers Modbus, and HART communications making this a versatile unit for many industrial applications. The simple menu structure and easy to read LCD display makes this very user friendly and an attractive choice for clients.

It’s just a simple meter

There’s more to the meter than meets the eye. Thousands of pounds are being wasted in energy

costs as a result of the incorrect installation and configuration or electricity meters. Martin Wardell explains:

As a rhetorical question, it assumes that the function of the simple electric meter to measure and provide the information is a reliable starting point. In the energy management market, we are on a quest to identify, quantify, allocate and/or eliminate the waste and efficiencies that define our purpose and achieve our goals.

So far, so good but what is out initial assumption is wrong? What if the readings from the meter are wrong? When a meter fails completely, it can easily be identified but a more likely event is a

partial failure or wrong initial setup that may not be noticed. A little understanding of the meters, components involved, human and technical errors can help ensure your ongoing efforts are based on a correct installation and can form the bedrock of your future analysis and conclusions.

The meters you are using and on which you base your decisions, have entered into use through a number of routes; as pre-configured ‘meter packs’ supplied by contractors on new sites or refurbished supply points or as retrofit installations on specific switches, supplies or items of plant.

As an electric meter will consist of the core meter, then the ‘direct connected’ is the most simple as the single or three phase cables should pass ‘through’ the meter with the current and voltage measuring elements being contained within the meter. Mistakes are limited but not possible!

The next type, and most common, are the three phases CT (current transformer) operated meters. Here the

current is measured via CTs with cables passing through them and outputs taken to the meter. This opens up the possibility of incorrect installation of CTs and voltage connections (taken from a voltage source and wired to the meter) or misreading of

the connection diagram or incorrectly identifying the load type to be measured. Where high voltage metering occurs, the additional element of VTs (voltage transformers, sometimes called potential transformers) is introduced.

Overcoming MistakesMore difficult to detect are where readings are a small amount, even down to half, of the true value. If the installation is assumed to be correct then all future readings will be out by a similar amount, so a consistency masks the problem. Add to this an incorrect setup configuration and any mistake can be missed of misread.

Retrofit meter installations can often contain mistakes, particularly where the contractor is unfamiliar with

metering. This can happen on both low and high voltage sites so can be present in distribution panels, panel boards, switchgear and individual switches. We have visited several sites where a failed CT has been found. A recent visit discovered a meter and transducer were wired from the same set of CTs. This doesn’t present a problem but the CTs were wired with a cable to the transducer, hence in parallel and not in series, and leading to the two devices ‘sharing’ the CT output. The customer saw the two devices reading similar amounts so had looked elsewhere for his loss of power. The fact that this meter was measuring MWs shows that mistakes can happen at all levels.

We know there are thousands of meters already installed that are not reading correctly. We know that these meters will be misreading energy which is being costed at thousands of pounds and leading to decisions involving millions of pounds. It helps to start from the right point.
