Cotton a dirty crop

• Cotton and Child labour: hundreds of thousands of children work in the cotton fields of Uzbekistan for little or no pay. Up to 100,000 children work 13 hour days in the cotton fields of Andra Pradesh India and in West Africa children are trafficked for work.

• Pesticides: cotton accounts for 16% of the worlds pesticides on less than 5% of the agricultural and used. (in India 54%iof all agricultural pesticides on 5% of the land) Every year thousands are poisoned and many die.

Water: cotton in central Asia has contributed to the draining of the Arul sea. Each cotton bud need six pints of water.

Subsidies: cotton is a heavily subsidized crop. The average american cotton farmer received $144,000 in subsidies in 2005. Cotton accounts for 40% for West Africa exports, falling prices are significantly impacting on poverty. Poverty and cotton prices related eg in Benin 40% decrease in farm gate cotton price 6 – 7% increase in rural poverty
