Approximately one third of flows remains excessive pollution
10% of the lengths of all streams are found water unpolluted or only slightly polluted

Water pollution in the Czech Republic
Caused by:-Lowering oxygen content- occurrence of pollutants in water- thermal pollution
The Bílina river – the most polluted river
![Page 7: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – A GREEN FUTURE FOR EUROPE](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649dfe5503460f94ae688b/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The basic groups of harmful substances that pollute water:
1. Salt2. Heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, copper,
arsenic) -Industrial technological processes - sludge from sewage treatment plants - fertilizers - burning fossil fuels
3. acid rains
![Page 8: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – A GREEN FUTURE FOR EUROPE](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649dfe5503460f94ae688b/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
4. Organic substances (oil processing, coal, paints and varnishes, ..)
5. Increased content of nutrients (chemical nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, ..) -> effect of reducing the oxygen content in water
6. Viruses and bacteria (get into the water from the waste water from households, agriculture, ..)

Protection against pollution
- Urban and industrial wastewater treatment plant
- prevention, following good business practices and responsible approach to the environment
- small streams are then significant strengthening their natural self-cleaning
