Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co.(GPIC), Bahrain was formed on 5 December 1979 as a joint ven-ture between the governments ofBahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.The company was formed toutilise Bahrain’s natural gasresources for the production ofbasic petrochemical products. TheGPIC complex consisting of twoproduction plants, i.e. Ammoniaand Methanol, was commissionedin May 1985 at Sitra Island on anarea of 60 hectares.

The initial plant capacities were1000 tonnes/day each of Ammoniaand Methanol. In 1989 this capaci-ty was increased to 1200tonnes/day of each product. In1998 a Urea plant, capacity 1700tonnes/day with full marineexport facilities, was added down-stream of the Ammonia plant.

La capacité de production initialeétait de 1000 tonnes par jour pourchaque produit l’ammoniaque et leméthanol. En 1989, la capacité aété augmentée de 1200 tonnes parjour pour chaque produit. En 1998,une usine d’Urée d’une capacité de1700 tonnes par jour avec desinstallatoins pour l’exportation, a été ajoutée à l’amont de l’usined’ammoniaque.

Alongside our cleaner production strategyand minimising of emissions and otherwastes, we at GPIC have undertaken anumber of unique environmental projects,such as the Charity Fish Farm, the BirdSanctuary and the Charity Garden, todemonstrate our commitment topreserving the environment and to reflectour continuous safe and reliableoperations.

Side by side with this, GPIC has made asignificant contribution to the economy ofthe Kingdom of Bahrain through itsremarkable achievements. In 2001, GPICwon H.H. Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman AlKhalifa, the Prime Minister of theKingdom of Bahrain’s award forexcellence in the major industrial sector,for its outstanding performance.

Moreover, the company has also won theprestigious International Sector Awardfrom the Royal Society for the Preventionof Accidents, UK (RoSPA) for operatingthe safest plant in the petrochemicalsector throughout the world in 2001.

Initially the workforce numbered about

400, most of whom were expatriates,

but today there are about 550 people,

76% of whom are Bahrainis, forming

part of the GPIC ‘family’.

The successful completion of the Urea

plant inaugurated by H.H. Shaikh

Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the

Prime Minister of Bahrain, enabled GPIC

to continue a significant contribution to

the expansion of the country’s economy

through industrial diversification.

In just over two decades GPIC has

grown to become a major

petrochemical venture. It has earned a

reputation for reliability, quality, safety,

health and care for the environment on

an international scale.

Au départ, l’effectif regroupait 400

personnes, la plupart ce sont des

expatriés, nous sommes aujourd’hui

550, dont 76% de Bahreiniens, formant

une partie de la famille GPIC.

La réussite de l’usine d’Urée, inaugurée

par le Premier Ministre du Royaume de

Bahreïn, S.E. Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman

Al Khalifa, a permis à GPIC de

poursuivre une contribution

significative à l’expansion de

l’économie du pays à travers la

diversification industrielle.

En deux décennies seulement, GPIC

s’est développé pour devenir un pôle

pétrochimique majeur. GPIC a gagné

PRODUCTS

Ammonia

Ammonia is one of the most common

basic chemicals in the world and the

primary compound for the production

of nitrogenous fertiliser worldwide. It is

primarily produced from natural gas.

Ammonia is synthesised by the reaction

of Hydrogen and Nitrogen under high

pressure in the presence of a catalyst in

an Ammonia Converter. The Hydrogen

is obtained from the steam reforming

of natural gas while Nitrogen is

supplied from the air.

Carbon Dioxide, a by-product of the

Ammonia process, can be used to

produce Methanol or Urea. It therefore

makes sense to have an Ammonia, a

Methanol and a Urea plant in the same

complex to take advantage of the

integration of these production

processes. This integration helps to

reduce the cost of production. It also

reduces the emission of Carbon Dioxide

to the atmosphere and the overall

consumption of energy.

LES PRODUITS

L’ammoniaque

L’ammoniaque est l’un des produits

chimiques de base les plus commun dans

le monde et le premier composant pour la

production de, engrais de nitrogène

mondialement. Il est produit par le gaz

naturel.

L’ammoniaque est synthétisé par la

réaction de l’Hydrogène et du Nitrogène

sous haute pression en présence d’un

catalyseur, dans un convertisseur

d’ammoniaque. L’Hydrogène est obtenu à

partir de la vapeur formée par le gaz

naturel tandis que le Nitrogène vient

de l’air.

Le dioxide de carbone, un dérivé du

processus de l’ammoniaque peut être

utilisé pour produire du méthane ou de

l’urée. Il est donc logique d’avoir dans le

même complexe, une usine de méthane,

d’urée et d’ammoniaque, pour tirer

avantage de l’intégration de ces processus

de production. Cette intégration aide à

réduire le coût de production . Elle réduit

aussi l’émission de dioxide de carbone

vers l’atmosphère et par dessus tout, la

consommation d’énergie en général.

Methanol

Methanol (or Methyl Alcohol) is also

produced primarily from natural gas

and involves the reaction of Carbon

Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide and

Hydrogen over a catalyst. The

consumption of Carbon Dioxide, a by-

product of Ammonia production

enhances the potential integration

between these two types of plant.

Urea

Urea is the most widely employed

nitrogenous fertiliser in the world and

is a major requirement for the

cultivation of rice, the staple food for

more than 50% of the world’s

population.

Urea is produced by reacting Ammonia

and Carbon Dioxide. The resultant

solution is concentrated and granulated

to form a free-flowing solid bulk

product that can be stored, shipped and

applied by end-users worldwide.

Le Méthanol

Le méthanol (ou alcool de méthane) est

aussi produit par le gaz naturel et

implique la reaction de monoxide de

carbone, de dioxide de carbone et

d’hydrogène sur un catalyseur. La

consommation de dioxide de carbone,

dérive de la production d’ammoniaque

renforce le potentiel d’intégration

entre ces deux types d’usines.

L’Urée

L’Urée est l’engrais le plus largement

utilisé dans le monde et est

indispensable pour la culture du riz,

nourriture de base pour plus de 50% de

la population mondiale.

of the large GPIC ‘family’, strong

emphasis is placed on their personal

Training and Development

As our employees are our greatest

asset, training and developing them is a

priority. For this reason alone a

substantial amount of money has been

invested in the Bahrainisation and

employee development programmes

since inception, including the lean years

when financial resources were limited.

The workforce is currently 76% Bahraini

and this percentage is rising annually.

Since inception a cumulative number of

318 Bahraini personnel have been

trained to take up permanent senior

positions in the company organisation.

In addition, the GPIC Training Centre

arranges a large number of

development courses every year to

ensure a well-educated workforce able

to meet the high technology demands

of the international petrochemical

industry.

In-house training is complimented by

the use of local and international

institutions, together with company

sponsorship of staff in local and

overseas universities.

Safety

Safety is of paramount importance in

the petrochemical industry where high

temperatures, high pressures,

hazardous gases and high speed

machinery are the order of the day.

GPIC prides itself in having accumulated

more than 5 million lost-time accident

free employee hours. The company has

earned numerous international awards

for safety, amongst others, eight

consecutive Gold Awards from the

Royal Society for the Prevention of

Accidents (RoSPA), UK. The crowning

glory in terms of safety was a RoSPA

International Sector Award achieved by

GPIC in 2001; one of the very few

companies outside of the United

Kingdom to be given this honour.

La Sécurité

La sécurité est un paramètre important

dans l’industrie pétrochimique, où de

hautes températures de hautes

pressions, des gaz inflamables et des

machines à grande vitesse se sont

l’order quotidien.

A permanently manned Health Centre

in the GPIC complex ensures that all

company employees get proper medical

attention and advice. Regular checks,

monitoring of industrial health issues,

such ear and eye protection, form the

thrust of our efforts in this field.

THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

At GPIC we regard ourselves as a good

neighbour to the communities in the

villages immediately surrounding our

complex. To demonstrate this attitude

we have pioneered projects, such as the

Charity Garden and the Fish Farm. The

projects are aimed, amongst other

things, to helping the local community,

especially the needy families resident

there. The Charity Garden and Fish

Farm have earned GPIC many accolades

internationally.

The Charity Garden

The Charity Garden is located in the

heart of the GPIC complex. Not only

does this provide a green vista for

visitors and employees, but it also

produces about 2000 kg of fresh

vegetables and dates every year. These

are all distributed to needy families in

the immediate vicinity of the complex.

LA COMMUNAUTE LOCALE

A GPIC, nous croyons que notre devoir

est d’être et d’agir comme un bon voisin

pour les résidents proches du complexe.

Nous démontrons cette attitude par des

projets pionniers, comme le Jardin de

Charité et la Ferme Piscicole. Ces projets,

Le Jardin de Charité

Le Jardin de Charité est situé au cœur

The Fish Farm

The Charity Fish Farm was constructed

in 1996. Different kinds of fish are

reared annually to demonstrate that

the sea surrounding GPIC is unpolluted

and clean. The Fish Farm Committee

undertakes continuous monitoring and

collecting of samples, which are sent

for analysis by national and

international laboratories to ensure

the suitability of the fish for human

consumption.

GPIC donates part of the annual harvest

to local charitable organisations. In

addition, a substantial number of fish

are released back into the sea to boost

local fish stock.

As a result of its initial success, the Fish

Farm was expanded in 2001 to increase

the capacity to produce 30,000 fish

annually.

La Ferme Piscicole

La Ferme Piscicole a été construite en

1996. Différents types de poissons sont

produits annuellement pour montrer

que la mer entourant GPIC n’est pas

polluée. Le comité de la Ferme Piscicole

supervise les contrôles permanents et

les prélévements d’échantillons qui sont

envoyés à des laboratoires nationales et

internationales pour verifier que le

poisson est consommable par l’être

humain.

GPIC donne une partie de sa récolte à

des associations de charité locales. En

plus, un nombre substentiel de poissons

sont relâchés en mer pour développer

le stock local de poisson.

Comme résultat, une extension de la

Ferme Piscicole a eu lieu en 2001 pour

atteindre une capacité de 30 000

poissons par an.

The Fishermen’s Channel

During the construction of the

complex, part of the coastal area was

reclaimed and resulted in the loss of an

access channel used by local fishermen.

As part of a compensation plan, GPIC

constructed a new larger channel

which provides access to fishing

grounds even at low tide.

Sponsorships

GPIC sponsors sporting events,

cultural activities and donates well

over US$ 150,000 annually to charities,

cultural organisations and sports

events.

Le Canal des Pêcheurs

Durant la construction du complexe,

une partie de la zone côtière a été

réclamée, et a provoqué la fermeture

d’un canal pour les pêcheurs. Comme

At inception, the management of GPIC

had the far-sighted vision to insist on

an environmental impact study and

design criteria which enabled the

complex to comply with the most

stringent environmental requirements

anywhere in the world. Although now

nearly 15 years old, the original

process plants are able to meet

modern environmental standards and

requirements. Gaseous, liquid and solid

effluents have been minimised for

these facilities according to the local

legislation.

The Urea plant was subjected to the

same type of environmental review

during the design phase. In addition,

GPIC insisted on installing a granulation

process for the production of final solid

product rather than the more

conventional prilling process, in spite of

the higher cost of construction and

licensing. The choice of this technology

resulted in reduced emissions of Urea

dust. This philosophy is followed in all

new construction or modification

projects at GPIC.

Au commencement, la Direction de

GPIC a eu la vision à long terme

d’insister sur les études d’impact sur

l’environnement et de définir des

critères qui permettent au complexe de

répondre aux demandes les plus

strictes sur l’environnement partout

dans le monde. Bien que datant de 15

ans, les usines originales sont adaptées

aux standards et aux demandes sur

l’environnement, les rejets de gaz,

liquide et solides ont été réduits pour

ces facilités en accord avec la

legislation locale.

L’usine d’Urée a été sujette au même

critere pour l’environnement durant la

phase de conception. En plus, GPIC a

insisté en installant un processus de

granulation pour la production du

produit solide final, au lieu du

processus conventionnel, en dépit des

coûts plus élevés. Le choix de cette

technologie a permis de réduire les

émissions de poussières d’Urée. Cette

philosophie est poursuivie dans toutes

In December 1999 GPIC received

certification to the ISO 14001 standard

for its environmental management

system from Lloyds Register, London,

the first industrial company in the

region to hold both ISO 9002 and ISO

14001 certification.

In 2001 GPIC won H.H. Shaikh Khalifa

bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime

Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s

award for excellence in the major

industrial sector. In addition, GPIC

received the Gulf Enterprise of the Year

Award in Dubai, UAE in 1996 and has

been recognised by the Gulf

Cooperation Council (GCC) as well as

local governmental agencies as a

leading industrial company in the

protection of the environment.

Environment Subcommittee

The Environment Subcommittee of the

main Safety, Health and Environment

Committee oversees all environmental

actions and initiatives in the GPIC

complex. It ensures that the

requirements of the ISO 14000

standards are met in routine activities

and practices.

It leads and organises specific

environmental initiatives such as the

tree planting campaign, the greenery

project and the various recycling

campaigns.

It is the custodian of all environmental

records of the company and sets the

annual environmental objectives in

these areas. It ensures the effective

flow of environmental information

throughout the company and liaises

closely with both the Fish Farm, the

Bird Sanctuary and other committees.

Le Sous-comité de L’environnement

Le Sous-comité de l’environnement du

comité principal pour la sécurité, la

santé et l’environnement supervise

toutes les actions et les initiatives pour

la protection de l’environnement dans

le complexe GPIC. Il assure que les

The Environment Subcommittee is

responsible for environmental

awareness programmes and campaigns

for all employees and also undertakes

the annual environmental lecture series

by the company’s graduate engineers

to school children.

Minimising Waste and Treating

Effluents

The initial care taken in the design of

the process plants automatically

launched GPIC on the road to the

adoption of clean production practices.

All effluent streams, whether gaseous,

liquid or solid, are carefully monitored

and controlled. Plans and standing

instructions are in place to minimise all

effluents.

During normal running of the Utilities

plant, chemicals are used for

regeneration of the water treatment

unit. These chemicals are neutralised

and rendered harmless prior to

discharge to the sea.

Monitoring Emissions

GPIC is the first petrochemical industry

in the Arabian Gulf region to

continuously monitor Sulphur Oxide

(SOx) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)

emissions on-line on all its vent and

exhaust stacks. Emission levels are well

below the Bahrain Environmental

Standards. In addition, the minimum

stack height at GPIC is 50 metres, thus

ensuring ground level concentrations of

the vent gases are non-detectable.

In addition, hazardous materials such as

Asbestos or Ozone-depleting materials

such as Halon, are not utilised on the

GPIC site. The complex was declared

Halon free in 2000.

Contrôler les Émissions

GPIC est la première industrie

pétrochimique dans la région du Golfe

à contrôler en permanence les

émissions d’oxide de sulphur (SOx) et

d’oxide de nitrogène (NOx). Les niveaux

d’émissions sont très en dessous des

Care for the Marine Environment

The Charity Fish Farm adequately

demonstrates the environmentally

friendly nature of the cooling water

discharged to sea and helps to conserve

and boost fish stocks in the coastal

waters of Bahrain. Around 30,000 sea

bream are raised annually and released

back to sea. A small number are

donated to local charities.

Care for the Land

The Charity Garden which produces

about 2000 kg of fresh vegetables and

dates for charitable donation every year

is prime proof of GPIC’s concern for the

land.

The Greenery Project undertaken inside

the GPIC complex has resulted in a

number of areas being converted to

palm tree groves, fruit and other tree

plantations. More than 25 green areas

with thousands of trees are located

within the GPIC complex.

RecyclingAll garden wastes are shredded andcomposted for recycle.

Solid wastes such as spent catalysts,aluminium cans, paper and oil arerecycled with due regard to theinternational conventions applicable, ordeposited in a certified government-runfacility where required.

Water ConservationSteam and process condensate from thevarious plants are collected, treated andreused. This reuse results in a watersaving of approximately 9000 cubicmetres daily.

In addition, a continuous campaign tosave water and to optimise water usageis in place.

Power ConservationEnergy conservation devices wereinstalled in all the buildings of thecompany. This resulted in reducing theelectricity consumption by up to 20% inthese areas.

Environmental Awareness

Through the activities of the

Environmental Subcommittee,

employees of the company are

regularly made aware of environmental

issues and practices. In addition, school

children are brought to GPIC on regular

educational visits. The synergy between

industry and the environment is always

highlighted on these occasions.

The company also arranges lectures and

presentations to both government and

private schools to enhance

environmental awareness amongst

students and to demonstrate that

industry can take care of the

environment.

Despite its small size, Bahrain is

renowned for the diversity of its

natural habitat, flora and fauna. As

elsewhere in the world, wildlife is

under pressure from development and

other human activities.

GPIC, realising its responsibility in this

field, has initiated a number of projects

that contribute to the conservation of

both wildlife and natural habitat.

The Bird Sanctuary

The GPIC complex is situated on the

coast and many marine birds and

waders are attracted to the immediate

coastline. The southern coastal strip of

the company premises was declared a

Bird Sanctuary in 2002.

It is an area frequented by both

resident and migrant birds. In order to

attract further species of bird, two

small islands were constructed off-shore

and reeds and mangroves planted in

the area.

Malgré sa petite taille, Le Royaume de

Bahreïn est connu pour la diversité de

ses habitats naturels, de sa faune et de

sa flore. Comme partout dans le

monde, la vie sauvage est menacée par

le développement et les activités de

l’être humain.

GPIC, conscient de sa responsabilité

dans ce domaine, a lancé de nombreux

projets qui contribuent à la

conservation de la vie sauvage et de

son habitat.

Le Sanctuaire Des Oiseaux

Le complexe de GPIC est situé sur la

côte et de nombreux oiseaux et

échassiers sont attires par cet endroit.

La bande côtière sud de l’entreprise a

été déclarée sanctuaire pour les oiseaux

en 2002.

C’est un lieu fréquenté par les oiseaux

migrateurs et sédentaires. De manières

à attirer d’autres espèces, deux petits

ilos ont été construits en mer et des

mangroves plantées dans la zone.

More than 300 species of flowering

plants have been recorded in the

Kingdom of Bahrain, and after a good

rainfall a variety of plants appear in the

numerous open areas around the GPIC

complex.

The Desert Plant Project

A new garden will be established in the

GPIC complex to grow and study

indigenous desert plants, especially

local medicinal and herbal species.

Plus de 300 espèces des plantes ont été
