Enough food in the world?

+ enough

Poverty : Central Southern Africa

The reason why there is hunger in the world?

Food production

Page 11: SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Growth of meat demand varies regionally

Page 12: SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Increase in food production after 1945 is not primarily due to increase in cultivated surface (increase of ca. 25 %), but due to increase in productivity

Extension of irrigated land Increased use of fertilizers

FUTURE OF FOOD

Effects on the environment General

Meat industry 85% of soil erosion (US) One factory raw waste of 12,000 people

Producing one hamburger of 150 grams 2,42 kilograms of vegetation 378 liters of water 161 liters of fossil fuel

DefinitionGenetically modified foods (or GM foods) are foods produced from organisms that have had specific changes introduced into their DNA using the methods or genetic engineering.

BUT:Foods produced by using genetically engineered products (cheese) or food produced from animals who were fed with GM crops are not called GM food.

Page 20: SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Facts

60%- 80% of all food comes in contact with GM Organisms

GM food is produced in 25 countries and on 134 mio. hectare

Page 21: SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Advantages Resistance against vermins and illness

Bigger then normal more food

Page 22: SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Disadvantage

Page 23: SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Traditional Farming?

Page 24: SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Problem:

Produce food for a growing population

Shrinking areas of cultivable land

Affordable prices for consumers

Page 25: SUSTAINABLE FOOD
Page 26: SUSTAINABLE FOOD

ECO Farming

three-field crop rotation, used

since two tausend years

No chemical fertilizers

No pesticide

No heavy machinery

No genetic engineering

Organic fertilizers

animal welfare
