As the agriculture contributes highly to the Rwandan economic output, the project named sustainable waste management for enhanced local economic development in Rwandan Cities consists of transforming waste to compost fertilizer to increase agriculture produc-tivity, reduce inorganic fertilizer import and create jobs from collection, transport, disposal and transformation.

60% of generated waste is actually collected. The target is to reach 100%. This will involve waste collection cooperative strengthening (ca-pacity building, mobilization, etc) and community sensitization

Currently sorting is done at household level with 30% effectiveness. Sorting centres are proposed to be integrated into the landfill infrastructure so as to reach 100%.

Organic waste (57.6%) will be transformed into compost fertilizer to be sold to farmers

Sanitary infrastructures for hazardous waste will be established

A recycling facility will be established to reduce recyclable waste and private sector mobilize for its operating through PPP

The Government of Rwanda through the vision 2020 expressed its firm aspiration to transform Rwanda into a middle income economy by 2020 supported by accountable governance systems (decentralization). In order to achieve this goal, the Country needs to meet a number of targets including amongst others maintaining the annual economic growth to above 7%, transform from sub-sistence agriculture economy to a knowledge based society and green growth (intensification of small scale farming, low carbon urban systems, etc). The agriculture sector contributes largely to the Country economic growth and enables the achievement of food security (for urban and rural population). Agriculture is explicitly recognized in the second Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (2013-2018) as one of the four priority sectors that will both stimulate economic.
