DESCRIPTION

A joint partnership between Golf Road Junior Public School and Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute, the TDSB Global Community Education Initiative (TDSBGCEI) gives NOW (21st) Century learners a global & local perspective on current world issues. This session will highlight our journey in using TDSB’s Academic Workspace (AW) Environment as a collaborative teaching and learning space fostered by Project Based Learning (PBL). Based on a variety of Grade 5 and Grade 6 themes/topics from the Ontario Science Curriculum, and through the use of current Web 2.0 resources/tools, this initiative allowed students to see their place in their own community and the world at large through a "Science Lens". Through our program, Secondary School Students (SSSs) worked to mentor and advise Elementary School Students (ESSs) towards meaningful knowledge construction related to Science, through building capacity in the NOW (21st) Century. Skills such as Communication, Collaboration, Creation and Critical Thinking were fostered through a Self-Directed, Inquiry/Project-Based Learning approach. Much to consider indeed, this presentation will strive to inform participants of our pedagogical design choices, so that one may implement a similar program using their institutions Learning Management System (LMS) - Moodle, Blackboard, Desire to Learn, Wikis, Blogs and the like. We will highlight our experiences in creating meaningful links between the curriculum, the Science and the students across the Toronto District School Board!

In engaging both Elementary and Secondary students through this cross-panel initiative, we assumed that students would be more engaged in curricular content through the use of mobile technologies.

Our Findings showed that as this initiative incorporated mobile technologies (such as the MCS 2.0 Laptops and iPads), student engagement rose. !Here, a key piece was uncovered. Whereas the MCS 2.0 Laptops allow for an enriched and robust digital creation process, engaging students with the iPads allowed for a much richer experience in not only content creation but also content consumption. !With this, the user interface and tactile experience offered by the iPad allowed students to delve “into” the work/content as they swiped and taped through the Science Curriculum.
