PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
This pastyear has been an exciting yearfor ourAssociation. First up, ourMoore Shield tearn wtrn its final in the Junior Union Competition and toFred Lake and his team. congratulalions. All teams performed well and the bqlswere a credit to our Association.
Gongratulations to Caringbah Sports in again winning the Club Championship and sixpremierships, which I think uould be a first.
An effori was made to get an U/8 competition off the ground. Unfortunately, arrangements were a litde late, not giving clubs sufficient time to organise teams. To the clubs that did partrcipate, a good time was had by all. The coming of the1993/94 season will see a bigger effort made to increase the numbers of our U/8tea ms.
One of the most pleasing things to come out of this se:rson was tre terrific supportreceived from the grade dub secretary, Kevin Holley who supplied grade players asselectors for our Representative teams and arranged coaching days The grade clubalso had firct grade players visiting schools in our shire during the cricket season.Kevin is also on our U/8 promotion team for the coming se:son. To Kevin Holley andthe grade club. a big thanks from our Association.
Alan Craston did not stand for Secretary this year and our nery Secretary, BrianProbert, did a great job To our C.ommittee: Ray Brennan, Treasurer: PeterSchofield, Competition Secretary; Recorders Bev Stanford and Jan Chalmers;Greg Godkin who took on the job of Public Relations and was also responsible forarranging the sponsorship for our representative teams, also b the rest of theCommittee thank you all for a job well done. To our sponsors. trank you for yoursupport and we hope our members support lrou and your products. To the Managers,Coaches. Club Secretaries, Scorers, Mums and Dads, thank you for your cooperationfor another successful cricket season.

CRICKETER OFTHE YEAR
MATTHEW BRADLEY - CARINGBAH SFORTS
Matthew @mes from the strong Caringbah Sports Club with whom he has playedall his junior cric*et. From the moment I laid eyes on him as a very small nine yearold, it was always obvious to me he had something special. Starting off his qrreeras a right hand baBman, and medium pac€ outswing borler, it didnt take long forMatt to show his class, scoring a brilliant century in the victorious Foster ShieldTeam's march to fie finals. His performanoe in both club and representati\re teams, eamed him a place in the N.S.W. Squads. captaining these sides from U/l3 !o U/l6.also being chosen in the N.S.W. PSA team at the age of 12. Matthew touredQueensland in the U/l3 and U/15 Metropolitan sides. captaining the team on bothoccasions. lt was not until his later years that his bowling also started to imprwe. This is due to Mattheu/s attitude. not only in the game but his commitment totraining is lirst dass. Mattherr has played two years Green Shield and in his finalyear, he captained the Sutherland side to a fabulous viclory orrer St. George atHursMlle Oval. In his final year in junior cticket, Matthew has really blossomed, batting well abore his years. His achievements this year have been little short ofouBtanding. He captained Sutherland Green Shield side, captained WaBon Shieldside and leading Caringbah Sports 16A to a fine premiership win. The SutherlandGrade Club has recognised Matthern/s immense talents. grading him this year andagain Matthew performed outstandingly, mwing quickly from 5th to 4th grade withlittle difficulty. I harre had the privilege of being inrclved with Matthew for quite alerrv years now and harre no hesitation in saying Malthew is one of the best battingprospects to come from iunior cricket in Sutherland for many seasons. A soundtechnique, beautiful footurork and tremendous timing certainly make him anoutstanding cricketer. This year in junior cricket, Matthew scored 342 runs and took14 wickets. I lmk forward to follorving Mattheu/s careier and wish him all the besllor the future. A vrrcrthy winnerl Well done Titch!

SECRETARYS REPORTThe Season Under Review.
Undoubtedly the highlight of the 1992193 season was Sutherland's magnifioentvidory oner St. George in the Green Shield final. Those who witnessed the matchwere treated to an e<hibition of first class cricket. The viclorious Sutherland sidecomprised of the complete U/16 Watson Shield team, dl locally coacied juniorcrickeiers. a complete team effort.
The Representative season saw a number of new faces in coaching positionsand ahhough not guite as successlul as the previous se:rson, Sutherland stillproduced finalists in the Harold Moore Shield. Walter Gee Shield and semi-finalistsin the Foster Shield. Congratulations to Fred Lake. Coach/Manager and GregGodkin, Asst. Manager and the Moore Shield team lor their convincing win in theShellShield Final.
The 199293 season also produced a record number of Sutherland juniorsselecled in the N.S.W. Metropolitan Squads, an indiciment of the Representativeteams'coaching staff.
Due to the diligence of the S.S.J.C.A.. the season ran very smoothly with fewhiccups and although interrupted by bad weather, the finals were \rery suooessful, watched and enjoyed by a large number of speclators.
This year the introduclion of U/8 teams has slightly boosted our numbers and Iam sure with a linle foresight and forward planning by some clubs, this age grouPwill prosper, thus ensuring a continuing groMh in our ranks for the forthcomingseasons. lt is very heartening to see more Parents panicipating in co:rching andumpiring c<>urses. This can only be beneficial to iunior cricket in the Shire.
With the financial supportlrom the N.S.W. State Gorrernments DepartmentofRecreation and Racing Capital Assistance Program, new sytthetic turf has beenon Qpter Bay, Gwawley North, Boystourn, Sqylla Bay and Woronora Heights.wickets have also been allocated to be returled for the 1993194 season, aachievement by the S.S.J.C.A. Committee. The grounds. although still not uPscratcfr have imprwed but simply there are far too many sporting codes playingtoo tew grounds.
Presentation Night in June 1992 was again successfully organised by thaelfervescent lvor Chalmers at the Cronulla Sutherland Leagues Club, hrcr being ablyassisted by Jan Chalmers and Bev Stanford. The 1992 Cricketer of the Year Awardwas presented to the talented Jason Holley lrom the Glmea club.
Finance - As deailed in the Hon. Treasure/s Report.
Inter Association Competitions. Because of the amalgamation of St. George andGeorges River, the Rob Allen and the Executive Trophy have been combined. These trophies have been traditionally sought alter by St. George, Georges River andSutherland. The Allan Ward and Mort Edson Shield awarded for the BestRepresentative Team was rvrcn by the U/14 Moore Shield Team.
The prestigious Representative Cap Presentation was held at Cronulla-CaringbahJunior Rugby League Club. The layout, facilities and hospitality contributed to a verysuocessful event.
Thanks and appreciation to:The hard uorking S.S.J.C.A. Committee.Sutherland Grade Club and Secretary Kevin Holley. The Umpires Association - President Jim Lynch for their prwision of officials
throughout the season.Vince Ridge, Secretary of the Mens Association for his continued cooperation and
[email protected] lceton, President of the Grade Oub for assistance with turf wickeB.Sutherland Shire Council, in particllar Colleen Stahlhut and Peter Hickman for their

BRI-AN PROBERTSECRETARY
TREASURER'S REPORTThe 199293 season prwed to b€ a difficult one financially, necessitating for the
first time application of a leqy on all Representative playrerc. Such aclion was nottaken lightly but was caused by the ever increasing cost of putting rep teams on thefield and the other pressures on our orerall finances.
Desphe these problems, we uere able to lay 3 replacement synthetic wickets andpurc*rase a urcrd processor to give the Association a high level of professionalism.
A key feature of the season was dre support given by our rep sponsors. without the$5200 from this source, we would have been in dire straits. Harry Peters was againout front sponsoring tvvo teams. Please give all our sponsors the support they havegiven us and deserve in return. Their advertisements appear throughout this report.
Our finances remain in a good position and we look forward to the ne)d seasontogether with the challenges it will bring
Thank 1ou once again to all Club Secretaries for your cooperation during theseason.

RECORDERS' REPORT
Firstly, may we congratulate the boys/girls who have won trophies for theirperformances throughout lhis season.
There was controversy regarding the regrading of teams and the tearns taking lheirpoints up with them from the loler grade. There does not seem to be an easyans\ rer as to the lairness of this but lou should also consider that the teams going upare put at a disadvantage. They are the leaders in the lourer grade where they aremore than likely to be in a position to win and then they are elevated to a highergrade. This may result in them then being at the bottom of that higher grade (although
iheir poinS may not Putthem in that position) and usually have to face atougher
competition at the higher lerrel. This se€Eon one of the teams did 9o on to becomeminor premiers in the higher grade but this is very unusual. The other team did notlare as well.
It is disappointing to see that some teams continue to bat out of order after therecorders have gone to the trouble to give the rotating batting teams their battingorder for the round to iheir club delegates for them to follour. We donl knour theanswer to this.
The wet weather rule seems to be giving some coaches/managers problems. lfyou are unsure of the rule, cieck with your Club management for clarilication and if
ihey aren\ sure then they should check with an association committee person. Therecorders don\ like to deduc{ points for minor breaches but we have to abide by the
rules in the Rule Book. The score books this year were of a reasonably high standard which makes our
a bit easier at the end of the season.I would like to congratulate the boys lrom Gymea 12D. Week after week this team
of young men have battled. On 6 occasions they had to bat twice but managed toavert an outright loss on all but one occasion, but in their final game they had their first
win. Not only did they win. but they beat the Premierc. Congratulations bq6, stick at
it, l'm sure that lrou will have more wins come ltour way neld season'Finally, l'd like to say how lVe enjoyed myyeans as recorder, but I have decided nol
to nominate for the 9394 season, so there will be a vacanqt for another P€nson.hopefully from another club to assist Bev in the recording duties.
Beverly and I uoutd like to pass on our best wishes to the young men urtto will
learre the lunior ranks and b wish them well as they graduate to men's cricket orgrade cricket.

PUBLIC REI-ATIONS REPORT.I rvould firstly like to thank atl players. parenB and officials for the manner in whic*t
)rou have represented the Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association. Althoughcompetitive, the Sports(person)ship. wtrich drines our Saturday morning competitionis the prime reason lor the suocess of this Association. Congratulations to all.
Sponsorship has dso been recognised as a major contributor to the future of ourgame. The economic factors whictr surround us certainly plae a strain on theAssociation purse strings. Withoutthe financial backing of the follorving sponsors. lifewould be just a litle more difficult. MPM Premium Seafoods, AV@ Finance, St.GeorEe Bank. Caltex Refining Company Pty. Ltd., Stewart Toyota, Befts Soft Drinks.Kingsgrorrc Spors Store.
Congratulations to all who participated in this yea/s Shell Series, with three teamsagain making it through to the finals. The Foster Shield, The Gee Shield just missingout on winning their fourth consecutive final, and to the Moore Shield for winning theU/14 final - this team has lost only one game in five years, the Watson, Weblin andCreak Shield tearns were also proud representati\res of our Association. All of ourvalued sponsons received great recognition throughout the season and all playerscarried their respeciive sponsors and Association logos with pride.
Junior Cricket in the Sutherland Shire is producing a wealth ol good cricketers andsteps are already in place for next season to ensure that our grorth continues.
Marketing junior cricket in the Sutherland Shire is made a lot easier by the way inwhich all players conducl themselves on and off the field. as most comPanies like tobe associated witr derreloping the type of sportsperson they would like to reflecl theirbusiness. Thank lou to all parents, players and executive committee memberc fortheir participation and assistance throughout the year.

PT,BLICITY OFFICERS REPORT:Cricket is cnrer for another season but it wilt be upon us again before too long.
There urere many positive things to come from the Past season. One thing that mustbe mentioned is the introduction ol the U/8 Competition. This has been a tremendoussuooess and the bq6 enjoyed the non-competitive atmosphere of their cricket All ofthe bolrs'cricket imprwed as the sealion progressed and lhe delight on their youngfaoes as they leamed the skills of the game was something special.
Congratulations to all the Premiership winning teams and especially to CaringbahSports for winning the Club Champtionship. I would like to thank each of theExecutive for their help and support during the season. Unfortunately, it is becomingharder to obtain the publicity that is necessary to help our association in the u/ay it
It
should be helped. Frank Dowling and Shire Monthly newspaper are always availablolto help us and for this I thank him. Our local communig radio station 2SSR FM whidtis situated at 99.7 on the FM dial is always keen to help. Ne><t season I hope to ha',.a regular session on this station and each club will be given the details.
Finally, I would like to thank all the players. We haw some great lroung peoploand some great lroung players in the Sutherland Shire @mpetition. Over recent years, Sutherland has had very fine Foster Shield Teams, and ourteam in 199293 was no exception. We won four of the five games in the Shell Seriesand reached the semi-finals. Only two teams, Newcastle and Georges River-St.George defeated us all summer and they contested the final.
The team's slrength lay in ils outstanding fielding and fine bowlrng. Brilliantcatches were taken in all parts of the field and accurate throws resulted in many vitalrunouts.
Outstanding among our bowlers was otf spinner, Nick Cole who picked up 18wickets in 6 games. Our opening bqrlers, Cameron Davis and Justin Drinkwaterbowled with great hostility and were never mastered by any opening batsman. Theywere superbly assisted by Simon Reid, Matthew O' Neill, Nathan Trajcetrski andAciam Fleming.

To succeed in Representative cricket, one needs two good teams. One team ol1playerc and one team of parents. The best performed players were in the field with John Muhs leading the way, bowling 78 overs for 8/116, 1.49 runs per o/er, John Mclnnes with his supetblycontrolled leg spin bowling took 1 1/1 61 off 65 oners and regularly made the breakthrough. Newcomer Todd Hughes 5/48. Scott Laws 4/82. and Mark Hadfield 3/13,togetherwith Geoff Morris 5/113 gave tremendous support at all times. The bestexample of what the tearn could do was in Round 4 against Penrith. At tea Penrilhwere2147 chasing 106 to win with 21 orers remaining. Even Penrith were confident,Sutherland perlormed magnificently, Ben Phillips led the way taking 6/11 from 9overs, bowling his leggies into a stiff southerly wind. Tim Moreland capped off agreat series taking 5 wickes behind the stumps (15 dismissals for the season). Wealso witnessed 3 of the best outfield catches seen at this level of cricket and Penrilhwere all out for 82 off the last ball. The bqls prwed that they were amongst the bestborling and field teams in the series.
Even though batting was our weakness, there were signs of strength, ClintonBeattiescored 152 runs at 19.00, scoring ala run a minute, with a bit of patience hewif f be great. Ben Jacobs (77 @ 11.00) sarted well with some good s@res but wasunable to score quickly enough. Casey Rosman (107 @ 13.38) and Geoff Morriss (69@ 8.63) shored great improvement tcnarards the end and again Scott Laurs and ToddHughes showed a lot of promise.
Ton/s and my thanks go to all the parents for their support throughout the season. The bq6 alwa;rs got to games on time, there was always a s@rer, afternoon teaswere sumptuous and a great time was had by all. A special thanks to Raellen & JohnMuhs. and Elinka and Don Jacobs for opening up their homes to us all, ir helpedmake an enjoyable season even better.

Following the trials in October, we were full ol confidence for the comingRepresentative series. This was an enthusiastic yet inexperienced side as there wtlonly 5 players left from the previous Foster Shield Team. Our lirst training runtconvinced us that this was a team that could go very well this year. The trial matchotconfirmed this with 3 wins from 3 games. lt was obvious, however, that our battingwas going to be the weak part of our game. We regularly shonred that w€ could blout the 50 orers but we only scored more than 100 twice in 8 matches. Even thoughwe were unable to imprwe on last season's per{ormane. there were a number dhighlighB that gave us great confidenoe for the netd s€ason. Troy Glennan came dage as a Captain, his performan@ on the field with bowling changes and fieldplacings was excellent and he led by example with the bat, scoring 97 runs at 10.78.

All our teamsproduced some outstanding performances and in the end , we finished up having ourmost successful season, winning the 10A and 12D premierships. We also achieved4th place in the Club Championship.
We wish to thank all our managers and coaches for their dedication and hard urorkthroughout the season. They were ably backed up by many parents who gave greatsuppori. We had 12 boys who represented the Sutherland Shire in the Shell Seriesand as always they did themselves and their club proud with some very fineperformances.
We support the Association in their endeavours to capture as many young players aspossible by introducing an U/8 competition and trust that the increased promotionalaciivity will anrasl some ol the older bqps back that we lost last year. Our thanks to theAssociation for another enjoyable season ol cricket.

ENGADINE DRAGONS CRICKET CLUB
This season we fielded six teams. the same as lor the 1991/92 sealion. The 14A teamwas our only success, being minor premiers and runnens up in the Competition. Wehad a large inrrolvement in the Reps with many boys gaining seleclion in various Repsides. Of these, three bols were sucoessful in the Moore Shield Premiership side, coached by our 14As Fred Lake. During the season. our club became incorporatedthanks to the tireless work of our Mens Secretary Adrian Vannan. On behalf of myselfand the Engadine Dragons Cricket Club, I would like to congratulate all awardwinners and premiership teams and to thank the S.S.J.CA. Commitlee for their effortsin making the 199293 season most enjoyable.
JOHN UEBELSECRETARY
SYLVANIA HEIGHTS COMMUNITY YOUTH CLUB
The Heights finished the 199293 season a very satisfied club. We were able to fieldnine teams in the S.S.J.CA. competition and we had four teams in the Finals. our 12Ateam as premierc, our 10C team minor premiers, and \^re were one ol only three clubsin the Shire to field an U/8 team. Our Committee and supporters are very enthusiasticand this showed in the fact that we were able to hold our Presentation Night on the27th March. This Presentation and sausage sizzle aftenvards was a great suocess. We thanked Harry Peters who represented the Association lor his support.
There were 170 bq6 registered in nine teams. We had four teams, 10C, 12A. 12D,148 in the finals. Five of our players were selected for representative teams. Thesewere Simon Corley, Grant Harris, Rodney Stafford, Scott Laws and Nick Davis. Wecongratulate these boys in achieving this honour. A number ol performances standout this season but one that should be mentioned is thal ol Grant Harris lrom our 12Ateam. Grant scored 453 runs at an average of 113.25 and backed lhat up with 18wickets at an average ol1?.77. Well done Grant.
On the long weekend in January, we again run our succ€ssful double wicketcompetition for our U/l2 and U/l4 players. This is now part ol our season calendar. One ol the extremely positive aspecb of our Club is the support we receive from agreat many people. This season. we had all teams with a good coach, assistantcoach, manager and scorer and many other people who were prepared to offerassistance when needed. We thank all these people and congratulate them for a jobwel ldone.
From outside the club we receive great support lrom Greg Ball Miranda: St GeorgeBank were supportive and our year book sponsors also made a very valuablecontribution To all these people we offer our very strong vote of thanks We alsothank the Suther land Grade Club players who came along to pract ice sessions andattended some games The junior players really apprectate the support shown by thesenior players Ol course the season and competitton would not be possible withoulall the other clubs who compete each week. The standard ol both cricket andsportsmanship was very high and we thank all other clubs for the very positive spirit rnwhich the games were played. We certainly look forward to another season in199394
We all know that Committees are the group ol people who start off building a horsebut end up with a camel I am delighted to say that Ken Whatley and his team are onegroup who know how to build a horse The supporl of the Committee was top classand the organisation of the competit ion was very good Thanks S S.J.C A. In the .199293 season, Gymeaf ie lded eightteams We had twoteams in the f inals
Al though we didn\ win a premiershrp. we drd f rn ish second in the Club Championshipand that was pleasing to the Club as rt indicated the overall standard of all the teams'performances. Gymea Bay is a large club. eight boyrs and twelve mens leams, I
would l ike to thank my own club committee for their support during the season. Wehad a strong representation in the Rep teams and I congratulate all Rep players on
their selection. Congratulations to C-aringbah Sports for winning the Club
Championship and for the performance of winning six premierships. Perhaps the onty
disappointing aspect of the season was the instances of teams losing points and thus
missrng the finals because of innocent errors on the part of team managers. Quiteoften the rule infringement has no beating on the outcome of the game. Some of the
rules that affec{ the bo;rs' enjoyment o{ lhe game need to be re-evaluated as more

CARINGBAH SPORTS CRICKET CLUB INC.
Congratulations to the new Association Secretary. Brian Probert. on a successful firstyear and to Competition Secretary. Peter Schofield. on another well run season. Alsoto the otficials and members of our Moore Shield team on winning their competitionfor Sutherland.
Spors have had another successful year but it is tinged with a little regret as it sees anend of an era with Peter Schofield's highly successful 16A team ending their juniorcricket da1o. Peter not only taught these boys to play well, he also taught them themeaning of fair play. dress sense and good condud. They have been an omament tothe game. to this club and to the Sutherland Shire in their time in the juniors and.which is more important, they have been a credit to their families and themselves. Iam sure that every fair minded pelson wishes them well in their future careers.
My orrrn personal thanks goes to all uho assisted cricket in the shire in any way duringthe season and especially to my orvn club executive and members who have onceagain been great. Thanks also to the sponsors at both Association and dub level, they have made the running of the game much less demanding. Best ol luck toeveD/one in the 1993/94 season.
