  • Welcome to the most widely read issue of the year! This issue focuses on Suwanee Day, a celebration of community. Last year on Suwanee Day, I gave birth to our third son. I cant believe he is almost one year old! That was a day I will never forget, and this year, Im looking forward to being part of Suwanee Day. We will be unveiling our new Suwanee Magazine mascot, Sammy, at Suwanee Day. Be sure to stop by our booth to say hello and meet Sammy! This issue features the Suwanee Day Guide, beginning on page 23 with a schedule of events, a map showing all the vendors

and a preview to help you make the most of your Suwanee Day celebration. Although summer is winding down and cooler weather is on the way, the heat is on with Get Fit Suwanee as the contestants push forward with regular meetings and group workouts! Be sure to check out their progress on page 10. Big Peach Running Co. is the official weigh in center for the Get Fit competition, and Jeff Rainwater, general manager of the Suwanee store, has been a huge support. Learn how the stores Tuesday evening run group has become a weekly community event on page 8. As a busy working mother, Im always looking for quick but healthy ideas for dinner! Fresh Market is more than just a grocery store with something for everyone! See whats waiting there for dinner on page 18. A special thank you to all of the advertisers who support this integral community voice...and welcome to new advertisers joining us to reach the community. After nearly two years of circulation the feedback continues to be extremely positive, and at Suwanee Magazine, we aregrateful for the community and the support.

  • hen I was 21 years old, I lost my own mother to Breast

Cancer. Then in 2010, a dear friend, Lisa Rhines, was

battling stage four of the disease and I felt I had to do something for her and the millions of other people fighting this horrible disease. Thats when I formed The Gaga for Tatas. Last year the team was about $1,000.00 shy of raising the required $2,300.00 per team member for the 2011 Susan G. Komen 3-day Walk for the Cure when the Suwanee Business Alliance stepped up to help the team reach its goal with a bighearted donation to match. Shortly after that, an individual member of the SBA, Tom Vooris, made a personal donation. Then Alan VanCampen, owner of Squeakys Car Wash and Lube, held several fundraisers for the team and the cause. After months of training and fundraising, and with help from lots of friends and supporters, including The Suwanee Business Alliance, The Gaga for Tatas made it to the team goal of $10,000.00. So we laced up our shoes and took on the pavement and the disease one step at a time. As a team, we are a powerful force, and the walk forever changed our lives. We realize it would not have been possible without support from friends and strangers alike. We were surprised and appreciative to the SBA, an organization that truly cares about doing business and doing good in our community. After being a member for several years, and now serving on its Board of Directors, I am proud to be part of this organization whose focus is building relationships in business as well as making a true difference in the community. I cant imagine why any business person in the area would not join this group because of the benefits it offers.

Sadly, Rhines lost her battle to cancerin 2011. But The Gaga for Tatas will walk the 60 miles in three days once again in October 2012. Were fewer in number, but we continue to make a difference in the

fight to end Breast Cancer. We are forever grateful to our many supporters

and counting on you again to help us make it to the finish line.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For more information about the walk and how you

can help make a difference, visit www.the3day.org. To make a direct donation to Gaga for Tatas, go to the link and look for Gaga for Tatas.

It depends on which decade(s) you were invested.Generally speaking, if you want to invest for

growth you will choose the stock market. Historically it has offered higher returns but also higher volatility - and thus more risk if you needed to get to some (or all) of your money. For steadier returns, investing in bonds has been the choice for many who want a somewhat more predictable income. In the decades of extended economic growth (1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1980s and 1990s), the stock market has produced an overall better return for investors, although with perhaps more excitement than some prefer. In decades that saw depressions and recessions (1930s, 1970s and 2000s), income investors faired better than those who had aggressively banked on a growth strategy. So what should we do now? While every investor is different and has unique circumstances, emotional risk tolerances, time horizons, tax implications, and existing portfolio considerations, the general answer is twofold. First, looking forward, do you feel that the economy is in an upward or downward trend? If you think that you have a sense of the general market direction, invest accordingly. Second, if you are not sure, you may want to hedge your bets and create a portfolio that includes both strategies, as well as other asset classes. Past trends are not guaranteed for the future. Our problem today is the world has become so interconnected, unpredictable and explosive that it makes long-term trend predictions quite difficult. Bank rates are nearly zero, so we are forced to look elsewhere for reasonable places to invest. Your professional investment advisor may help you feel more confident about opting for growth or income in your portfolio.

  • ooch N Paws Pet Boutique and Bakery in Town Center, has a lot to celebrate in September. Not only is the shop celebrating its two year anniversary and the opening of a second location

in Oct. 2012 in Vickery Village in Cumming, but its now expanding to an online shopping option for pet owners to shop from the comfort of their own home. Bob and Starla Pellegrino, owners of the pet boutique, have launched the new Pooch N Paws online store offering customers a wider selection of pet accessories and more. Our stores are just a sample of what can be found on our online store, where a customer can choose from over 2,000 items available in an assortment of sizes and colors, Starla Pellegrino said. Shop from your home in your pajamas and get exactly what you want for your pet delivered to your doorstep.

While the online shopping experience is comfortable and convenient, its also easily accessed by visiting the stores

website, at poochnpaws.com and clicking the Shop Pooch N Paws button. The Pellegrinos said they have enjoyed building relationships with their customers and seeing the pet owners enhance their connection with their pets. We are so happy that we selected Suwanee, and specifically, Town Center to open our first store, Starla Pellegrino said. The community is so supportive of small

businesses and that has been critical to our ability to grow and give back. We have found that the more we give to the community, the more the community gives back. We love our customers and want them to continue to give us fresh new ideas on items they would like us to carry and events they would like to be a part of.

  • n a normal day at Suwanees Town Center, one may see folks strolling from shop to shop or perhaps grabbing a bite to eat at one of the fine eating establishments. But if you happen to be there on a

Tuesday evening, you may notice a lot more people in the area. Thats because of the Big Peach Running Co. and its Tuesday run group. Big Peach joined the shops, restaurants and other businesses in Town Center in September 2011 and held the first official Big Peach run just a mere few weeks after the stores opening on Oct. 18, with about 69 runners who donned their running shoes and hit the Suwanee Greenway. We started this run group with the hope of providing a safe way to bring the community together for exercise and camaraderie with all ability levels welcomed, said Kermitt Bowen, guest advocate and run group leader. And since that first group run, the number has grown to an average of 150-200 runners at different ability levels ranging anywhere from a six minute per mile pace to a 15 minute pace. Jeff Rainwater, general manager for the Suwanee location, said they accommodate the number of runners at different levels by organizing runners into time groups, very much like a large race, and each group is released to start in 30 second intervals with the fastest runners starting first. Rainwater said by starting in intervals it helps to ensure theres not a bottleneck of runners on the boardwalk and on the Greenway.

On Sept. 11, the group will have a unique opportunity to be part of a special event when Runner's World, one of the leading magazines dedicated to the sport of running, comes to the group run in partnership with the American Cancer Society with the goal of bringing more awareness to ACS's DetermiNATION endurance

training and fundraising program. Nathan Haskins, manager of the store at Town Center, said DetermiNATION provides the training, coaching, support and encouragement to get you to the finish line of a half marathon, marathon or triathlon and, as a participant, you have the opportunity to raise money for cancer research. We are extremely excited to be partnering with them, Haskins added. Rainwater said the hope for the

run group is to continue to provide the community with a safe, enjoyable and encouraging place to be active, while also serving as a way to continue growing and encouraging an active lifestyle in the Gwinnett County area. Plans are to keep the runs interesting with periodic events such as scavenger hunts and poker runs. I think what makes this group so special is a combination of things: the park and the greenway, never having to run alone and being able to meet new people, Bowen said. It's turned into a great community event! The company also has groups meeting regularly at the Brookhaven, Marietta and Decatur locations. For more information, find the group page on Facebook by searching for Suwanee Big Peach Runners.

    SUWANEE GET FIT CHALLENGE

UPDATE:fter a busy summer where most of the contestants hit a plateau in their weight loss journey, we at Suwanee Magazine brainstormed on how to help get everyone back on track.

First, we had everyone re-read their original submissions for the competition. Reading over the reasons they had decided to make this commitment in the first place definitely hit home with the

contestants. Secondly, we decided to introduce a point system, encouraging a little friendly competition. Contestants are awarded points for activities that will ultimately help them to achieve their fitness goals. Points can be earned by working out, attending group workouts, running a 5K, blogging, posting workout photos on Facebook, and more. There have been several prizes along the way including free workouts at 9Round and Rainbow Pilates, SkyZone tickets, gift cards and more. We also announced that the Grand Prize winner (the contestant that loses the highest percentage of weight) will receive a romantic getaway at Chateau Elan, a makeover from Salon Greco, a platinum membership to Rainbow Pilates and more. The person with the most points will also receive a Chateau Elan retreat. Since the introduction of the point system, the contestants have been hitting the gym and workouts hard. The contestants had some great group workouts that included a 9Round 30 minute workout, which is a combination of nine stations - most of which are boxing and kickboxing. The group also attended a Rainbow Pilates workout. Contestants had the privilege of meeting and hearing personal accounts from Leah Fernandez and Jim Murphy, two people who have endured their own weight loss challenges and experienced success. Since February 2011 Fernandez has lost 116 lbs., and in the past year, Murphy has lost more than 150 lbs. Both Fernandez and Murphy shared how they made the decision to get healthy, what they did to lose the weight, and what they do today to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

Michelle McShane has kept up a healthy diet and the scale is showing the results. Like the other contestants, McShane did not work out as much during the summer as she had hoped, but is now back on track regularly participating in group workouts, Big Peach Tuesday night runs and hitting the gym.

Bill King has had some setbacks including a back injury, but he is not giving up. He shared in a recent blog, Weight loss is my fundamental need right now and it is my fundamental problem. Levi (Kings trainer) says, You cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet, and he is right. Now King is doing better and continues to push forward with his workouts and nutrition goals.

Ginny Wurttemberg has had added challenges with Multiple Sclerosis flare ups. Wurttemberg in her blog wrote, This flare has been worse than others because it affected my feet and legs. For the past two weeks, I have felt like I was walking around on pins and needles that had just come out of the fire. I also had some weakness in my left leg. When I have a flare, I am put on intravenous steroids for three days and receive more steroids than 15 medrol dose packs you get when you have bronchitis or a severe sinus infection. Then after those three days, my entire system crashes because my adrenal gland shuts down since it wasnt needed while using the steroids. The crash is WORSE than the medication itself. Im still trying to come back to normal. But Wurttemberg is a trooper and said the exercise helps her MS, and she has been hitting the gym and running when she can.

Divya Desai leads the point competition by a long shot. Between her frequent and multiple workouts each day and number of blogs she posts, its hard to keep up! In one of her recent blogs, she shares inspirational quotes and perhaps this quote sums up how far Desai has come in this challenge: If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. - Bruce Lee. Desai is doing just that. She participated in the Skylars Run 5K Aug. 18, and beat her last 5K time in March by more than six minutes.

Erika Beckwith has done well with increasing workouts and keeping a positive attitude. Her recent blog explains her challenges and plan. With almost four months left in the challenge (YIKES), its time for me to step things up a bit. For the past three weeks, I have been doing a great job with the active part of losing weight. I have been making a conscious effort to schedule my workouts for at least four to five days a week; sometimes working out at least two times a day. As a result, I feel great, have increased energy and have recently noticed that my clothes are starting to fit a little looser. However, the number on that scale has not moved significantly enough for me to claim total success. So this means its time for me to step things up a bitno let me take that backI need to significantly kick things into high gear.I already know who the culprit is my diet is to blame for the slow decrease in weight. To help me identify where I am going wrong, I have decided to enlist the help of the app, Lose It!" See sidebar for more information on Lose It!

    Erika

    TOTAL LOST:15 lbs

Lose It!(recommended by Jim Murphy) allows you to keep track of your daily food intake and exercise. You can customize the app according to your weight loss goals and it will tell you how many calories you should eat on a daily basis according to how many pounds you would like to lose on a weekly basis. It also includes comprehensive reporting features to make tracking your progress easy. Erika has been using Lose It! and has seen results. "The main thing that I like about it is that you can use Lose It! on both your smart phone and via the internet. That means whether Im working from home or Im out with the family, I have no excuse for NOT making healthy eating choices. Nor do I have an excuse for NOT recording what Im eating. said Erika.

If you see one of the contestants in the gym or around Suwanee, let them know they are doing a great job. Knowing you have people rooting for you is a huge help. Follow their blogs - they are often inspirational and even entertaining. The Get Fit Suwanee final weigh in will take place in mid-December with the winner announced in the January/February issue of Suwanee Magazine.

  • The Best Culinary Experiences Suwanee Has To Offer

    18 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com I SEPT / OCT 12

    foodBY: Tana Christian Suggs

    [email protected]

ince opening in June 2006, The Fresh Market, located at 1500 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Suwanee,

offers the atmosphere of an old world European market with its unique fare, outstanding quality and an array of departments including an old-style butcher shop and fish market, bakery, produce and floral stand, and delicatessen all under one roof. Jim Healy, store manager of the Suwanee location, said staff at The Fresh Market is dedicated to delivering a superior shopping experience that exceeds customers' expectations by offering fresh, premium products and providing a high level of customer service. Our goal is to become an out of the ordinary food destination store for those who enjoy cooking and good eating, Healy said. From our bountiful produce and high quality meats to our convenient prepared foods and gourmet cooking ingredients, you will find that we are committed to

variety, freshness, and above all else, quality. No time to shop and prepare dinner yourself? The Fresh Market has a prepared food section offering a gourmet dinner that would rival any restaurant for those who need to eat and run. And the markets rotisserie foods offer just that.

Healy said theres something special about the rotisserie at The Fresh Market.

Perhaps it is the transformation of your favorite foods into an excellent meal by the gentle

rotation in front of the intense heat, he said. Or, perhaps its the convenience of a wholesome and healthy dinner for families on the go. Whatever it is, our customers cannot get enough of our rotisserie foods. According to Healy, rotisserie involves grilling, roasting, smoking and basting all at once, and basting the meat both internally and externally produces an exceptional moistness. Baby back ribs, whole chickens, split chicken breasts, salmon and some of the best wings in town can be paired with a side dish and a fresh salad from the deli for the perfect fresh and convenient meal.

Superior sandwiches begin with the finest ingredients possible and are made from the Signature Collection Deli Meats. Pair one with an apple or a single-serving of the tortellini or pasta salad for the perfect lunch combination. And finally, customers can indulge in the over-the-top desserts from The Fresh Market Bakery including fresh baked pound cakes, nut breads, cookies, bars, brownies and dessert classics such as clairs, fruit tarts, cannolis, tiramisu and crme brle. Since opening, The Fresh Market has experienced tremendous growth, and Healy said he feels very strongly about The Fresh Market being a part of the community. We participate in events like Taste of Suwanee, Suwanee Day and Music Fest at Town Center Park, he said. In addition, the market is a sponsor of Suwanee Magazines Get Fit Challenge. We continue to look for opportunities to give back to the community, and we support many local charities, fundraisers and schools, he said, including the daily donation of products not sold to help feed the hungry. Sept. 7, 8, and 9, the market will hold its annual fundraiser "Hope Floats" to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Check the website, thefreshmarket.com, for details about this years Taste of the Holiday event coming up just in time for holiday planning.

  • fter serving as a Suwanee City Council member for nearly 10 years, Jace Brooks resigned to run for Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, and as a result, Suwanee City Council welcomed new council member, Beth Hilscher, who ran unopposed, to her

first meeting in July. At Suwanee Magazine, we wanted to learn more about Suwanees newest council member, so here is a little more information about Hilscher, her family, and her plans for the community. Hilscher is a practicing attorney with an office in Suwanee since 2000. She has been married for 15 years to her best friend, Steve, who works in medical supply sales. Their son, Ryan, is a sophomore at North Gwinnett High School, and will soon be an Eagle Scout. Their daughter Emily, 12, is a seventh grader at North Gwinnett Middle School and is a girl scout. Emily also plays soccer. Both children are active with the youth group at Sugarloaf United Methodist Church.

    ABY: Tana Christian [email protected]

Suwanee Magazine: How long have you been a Suwanee resident? And what made you choose Suwanee? Hilscher: I have lived in Suwanee for 13 + years. My husband and I knew we wanted to live in Gwinnett due to its highly regarded school system and we were just starting our family. We feel fortunate that we landed here - we had no idea of how great of a community Suwanee would become.

SM: When and how did you get involved with the city of Suwanee and what compelled you to do so? Hilscher: Shortly after moving my office to Main Street, I became involved in the Downtown Development Authority. Naturally, I was interested in the economic vitality of the downtown area.

Serving on the DDA has been a good stepping stone to becoming more involved in the community. SM: What made you decide to join the Suwanee City Council? Hilscher: I have considered running for Suwanee City Council for the past few years; however, in previous years, I felt I had too much on my plate to take on the role effectively. In addition to building my law practice and serving on various business and civic organizations, I served on the PTA, the Homeowners Association Board and coached youth soccer. Last spring, I completed Leadership Gwinnett and am no longer involved with some of my previous activities, so the time seemed to be right.

More importantly, I feel like my children are now at good ages. We discussed the commitment as a family and the decision was made with my familys full support.

I am raising myfamily in Suwanee, I have a home in Suwanee, and I operate my business in Suwanee. I have benefited from all that Suwanee has had to offer for the past 13 + years, and now I want to do my part to make sure that Suwanee continues to be a

    wonderful place.

  • Sept. 15 will mark the citys 29th Suwanee Day when area residents gather inTown Center Park to celebrate the community. To help area residents make themost of this special day, this insert contains a schedule of events to help you planyour day along with a map to help you navigate through the hustle and bustle during the event. So mark your calendar, plan your day and join neighbors

and friends as they live well, play hard and smile more during Suwanee Day!

SM: What do you think is your greatest strength that you bring to the council?Hilscher: I would say the greatest strength I bring to city council is the fact I am fully invested in the community. I am raising my family in Suwanee, I have a home in Suwanee, and I operate my business in Suwanee. I have benefited from all that Suwanee has had to offer for the past 13 + years, and now I want to do my part to make sure that Suwanee continues to be a wonderful place.

SM: What would you like to accomplish as a member of Suwanee City Council? Hilscher: My first priority is to serve honestly, with common sense, and with fiscal responsibility. One thing I would like to see completed is the establishment of a non-restrictive, National Historic District Registry in the old town area giving property owners within that district potential tax incentives for rehabilitating and improving their historic properties. It is an endeavor that was initiated last winter and was supported by the DDA. The application is now pending approval. Additionally, like many of my neighbors who voiced their opinion through the 20/20 Strategic Vision planning process, I would also like to see continued improvements made along the I-85 gateway area in order to ensure the entrance to our city is safe and aesthetically pleasing so as to attract new business and spur economic growth in our community.

SM: Suwanee's motto is Live, Work and Play. What are a couple of your favorite things about Suwanee and how do you spend your leisure time? Hilscher: Living in Ruby Forest, we are fortunate we have easy access to Suwanee Parks without getting in our cars. We love to cycle or walk our dogs on the trails at George Pierce Park to access the Suwanee Greenway or Town Center Park. And of course, we take part in many of the fabulous events held at Town Center Park.

Salmon and mauve shades of pure virtue and divinely refined appeal can be combined with layers of

beaded chiffon. Accessories include pale orange and deep reddish-brown tones of ethereal like

silken scarves. Slate, grey and mauve shades are found in tailored lines. Muted blue and icy green hues are worn underneath woolen suiting. Charcoal and crimson shades are paired

with deep plum, rich teal and silk velvet. Accessories are studded with sparkles and beads for a stunning finish.

Hair & Nail Trends:Dominant hair colors include lively expressive colors like dark chocolate, violet ash and copper ash. Also look for dark faded purple hair with apricot accents, dark hair with hot pink accents, pale lilac and lavender blonds, earthy tones with super shine and reflection. ith a vision to bring hair trends and skin luxury to Suwanee, Rhonda Nelson, owner of

R Salon and Spa, began welcoming clients to the Suwanee location on Peachtree Industrial

Blvd. in March 2010. Nelson said she chose Suwanee for the location of her salon because it was an up and coming community with its shopping, restaurants, communities and parks. Since opening, Nelson said the salon and spa has been well received. The unique things that Nelson said the salon brings to the community are the hair care and skincare products she carries. Prive hair care products, developed by French born Laurent Dufourg, are created from select herbal blends to provide hair with amazing benefits. When I saw the products in a New York salon, I knew from the packaging and the line of products it was something I would want to have available for my clients, Nelson said. I checked into the line and was interviewed by the company to be able to carry the exclusive line in my salon. Nelsons favorite Prive products include the conditioners and the Texture Spray. The conditioners make hair feel soft and smooth while looking great with no build up. The Texture Spray helps hold hair, keeps frizz out, shows texture in hair and is great for an all-day hold. For skincare Nelson carries the Obagi line that gives skin a total transformation, something that Nelson said helps the products sell themselves. The blender has 4 percent hydroquinone to target hyper pigmentation, and the Elastiderm Eye Cream works to lift around your eyes and helps restore the elasticity around your eyes and reduce the appearance of visible fine lines and wrinkles, she said.

With an experienced staff, Nelson said they strive to create a unique environment that includes customer intimacy and the personal experience of what each client wants and needs in an upscale salon. For more information about R Salon and Spa, visit www.rsalonspa.com.

Jim Ellis Buick GMC Mall of Georgia celebrated a groundbreaking at 3612 Buford Hwy in Buford, GA on August 15. Its new and larger state-of-the-art 55,000 square foot facility will sit on 12 acres. Mark Frost, vice president of GM Brands, explained that when acquiring the Buick GMC franchise two years ago, Jim Ellis leased the current facility from the previous owner. The current facility is decades old and is inadequately suited to meet the needs of consumers in today's retail environment, Frost said. The new facility will be a significant upgrade, befitting of the premium/luxury image of the Buick and GMC brands and will afford Jim Ellis customers the latest in comfort and convenience in sales, service, and parts." The new facility is scheduled to open in mid-2013.

After 15 years in Duluth, Parsons has moved to Suwanee. The new location is in the Suwanee Jubilee Shopping Center, at 1500 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., near The Fresh Market and offers a large selection of unique gifts and name brands such as Pandora, Brighton and Vera Bradley. The store is open seven days a week.

Maynard climbed with a team of wounded veterans, friends and professional climbers.

During the summer, students take a much needed break from the classroom. Its a time for students to rest and relax after months of the daily grind of school. Also during that time, many students opt to do something meaningful and to take part in an experience of a lifetime. Many Peachtree Ridge, North Gwinnett and Greater Atlanta Christian High School students spent several months to train, and this summer, took part in Sugarloaf Missions, a Student Mission Group that is part of Sugarloaf United Methodist Church in Duluth.

There were four levels of mission trips: Level one went to Newport, Tenn. and Savannah, Ga. Level two went to New Orleans, Philadelphia and Rosarito, Mexico. Level three went to Costa Rica and Panama. Level 4 went to Peru and Cambodia. Students who went to Peru worked with a missions organization called Frontline Peru, spending one week in the capital city of Lima working in the area of Pachacutec, and then one week in the Amazon jungle in the city of Pucallpa holding Vacation Bible Schools, youth outreach programs, orphanage visitation and other special construction projects to show Gods love in real and practical ways.
