Spectacular Concert Sunday 19th March 2017 Suzuki

Graduation Applications Due Thursday 13th April 2017

Welcome back to term 1 2017. By now you will all be back from holidays having resumed lessons. I hope you have a wonderful year learning new pieces and revisiting old repertoire.

The first event for the year is the Studio Spectacular Concert at the Edwardstown Baptist Church Sunday March 19th at 2.00pm.

Please invite your friends to watch our talented children perform and we ask that you bring as many as possible. We are offering a special ticket of two for the price of one if you bring more than 4 adults with you. Children are free regardless of age.

By now you will have established a practice routine for your children. Finding the same time every day is ideal if possible. Children are fresher in the mornings so before they leave for school may be a possibility.

It is evident to me that the stronger the parents’ commitment to their child’s musical development the more progress and success will follow.

Commitment however needs constant energising and working towards the concert in March is a wonderful beginning for the year.

There is also the Graduation Concert in June. Remember the Graduation Applications are due 13th April.

This year we will be holding the Winter Festival again in July 20th -22nd. Please put this date in your diary and come along for two days of fun. This is an opportunity for your children to improve their playing and be stimulated by the daily sessions with the visiting teachers.

The Interstate Teachers are the Violin teacher from the Gold Coast Sachie Yuki , Cello Teacher Fran Firth from Sydney and the Piano Teacher Itsuko Bara from Sydney.

These are all occasions when you can attend and be “energised”. The calibre of teaching by the three visiting teachers is of the highest standard and we are fortunate in having them attend the Winter Festival.

I look forward to seeing you at the Concert in March and I hope you are able to bring many of your friends who can enjoy and be entertained by our wonderful young performers.

The annual Studio Spectacular Concert is a fun and exciting way to start the new Suzuki year! All students are invited to come along to perform onstage with their friends, teachers and the rest of the Suzuki Community.

The Studio Spectacular Concert has something for everyone. All instruments (except pianos) will the opportunity to perform with their instrument groups and during the final tutti items, all instruments will play together. The repertoire chosen will feature highlights from the Suzuki repertoire (great for revision!) and will cover all abilities from beginner level to advanced.

A highlight of the Studio Spectacular program is the performances contributed by individual teacher’s studios. Often the performances feature pieces from outside the Suzuki repertoire, giving the audience and performers the opportunity to enjoy a broad range of different types of music.

Please make sure your Suzuki membership is up to date in order for your child to participate in this concert.

Association Concerts are run on a not for profit basis. However, hiring an excellent venue, running rehearsals, printing programs and employing professional accompanists do mean we need to charge a small fee at the door to help cover costs. This year, adult tickets will cost $10 each. School aged children are free.

Students intending to perform at the Studio Spectacular Concert will need to attend the rehearsal at Concordia College on the 5th March. Please note that we will be using a different part of the school – The Suaviter – access this as if heading to the upstairs classrooms and continue through to the next building – look for signs and people showing the way.

Performance attire for the Suzuki group items in the concert will be Suzuki concert uniform – white tops and black bottoms with a splash of red. Students performing during items for their own studio may choose to wear an outfit other than the official Suzuki uniform. However it is required that all students make sure they are wearing correct Suzuki uniform for tutti group performances. There will be time allowed in the program for costume changes.

Parents - we look forward to another year of you performing on your child's instrument. This year the performance items will be Busy Busy Stop Stop in the key of D major (Start on open D) and Twinkle Theme in the same key. Happy practising!

After having the past 3 years focusing on Teachers, parents and then the children, this year's will focus on the audience. We are offering a 2 for 1 ticket price when you bring 4 or more adults to the concert. (Full price tickets are $10 for Adults and Children are free).

Prizes on offer for people/families that have brought in the most number of guests. Other smaller prizes could be on offer could be for things such as youngest audience, oldest person in the audience, person who has travelled the furthest.

The idea is to bring people who might not otherwise come to a concert like this. Think about inviting friends from school who have shown an interest in your music, extended family or your next door neighbour who has been listening to you practice for years!

Please note that 2 for 1 offer will not be applied until entire group is present at the door.

The Top Five Ways to Motivate Your Kids To Practice - By Edward Obermueller

Practice Motivator #2

Here are some very common statements I hear from students and parents: I forgot to practice this week.

We had such a busy week, it was really hard to find the time.

I had [fill in sport or activity here] and just couldn’t practice.

If you have ever felt this way (and I know I have as a busy parent of four boys!), here is something to take to heart:

Listening Counts!

During the busy weeks, listening is the best thing you can do. And it’s so easy!

Why does it count? Because it is training your ear, and your mind, in the melody and rhythm of the pieces you want to learn.

It works at the subconscious level: your brain lays track for the music while you consciously pay attention to something else. But you can also pay close attention to the music as you listen, or follow along with the written notes. Combining the twosubconscious and consciouslistening methods will turbocharge your playing ability.

Take it from Yo Yo Ma, who listens to a new piece he wants to learn about 100 times before ever playing the first note.

TRY THIS

Put in the CD or play from your iTunes, the appropriate Suzuki Book, or a recording of the piece you want to learn.

• Play it while reading

• Play it in the car (put commuting time to good use)

• Play it during homework time (great for background music)

• Play it while preparing dinner

• Play it as a “timer” for an activity (Book One is about 15 minutes long, perfect for a session of reading or tidying up a bedroom.)

• Play it with music on the stand or in your lap and follow along

Keep it easy and simple. Add practice time back into the week by listening. Almost magically your playing will improve!

Practice Motivator #3

Many parents worry about how to practice with their child. They worry particularly that they aren’t doing and saying the right things.

If you find yourself in this position, it is helpful to take a step back. Realize that the heart of your role as the practice parent is to provide your presence.

Be Present (In a Way That Fits)

Think of practicing as watching a flower bloom. You can’t force it. Yes, it needs water, and perhaps a trimming from time to time. But other than that, you just stand back and enjoy it.

This can be extremely hard to do! Especially for us typeA personalities. We want to cut to the chase, to identify problems efficiently and solve them (because there are SO MANY MORE problems waiting for us after this practice session!) and we think that we are being helpful by actively trying to do things, and to fix whatever is going on.

Presence is hard to define. It is the art of being. It has to do with awareness, attentiveness, and physically being around when your child is practicing (though not necessarily in the child’s space.) It is giving the child enough attention for them to know what they are doing matters, and that you care enough to listen to it and provide feedback.

TRY THIS• Be nearby. Even if you have to multitask (how can

we survive as parents without multitasking?) in the next room sending an email, doing dishes, or paying bills, you can “send in” a comment from time to time, such as “that’s sounding great!” or “keep going!”

• If the child is upset or frustrated, just ask curiously about what it is that is bothering them. Resist the urge to state what you think it is. Let them discover it on their own

• Ask yourself, at what time of day am I most able to be present? That is, to have my heart and mind available to my child during his or her practicing?

• Let the way you are present be in a way that fits your child. If he or she wants you right there in the practice room, do that. But often you’ll find that children do not want that level of “hovering” over their practicing. Again, being nearby may be just the thing needed in that case.

Presence is about the heart. Where your heart is, there will your presence be.

Let yourself enjoy being in the presence of your child, and your child’s practicing, and it will truly flower.

For the rest of The Top Five Ways to Motivate your Kids to Practice (by Edward Obermueller) Keep an eye out for our next newsletter!

‘ When we emphasise ‘speed’ we lose sight of the importance of

repetition and the need to master the easiest things first before

advancing to the more difficult. Rushing from one piece to the next does

not increase children’s ability. ‘ Sheila Warby, President Suzuki NSW

Graduation Concerts are held twice a year and are an important opportunity for parents and

family to share the achievement of our students. Current members of the Suzuki Talent

Education Assocication of Australia (SA) are invited to submit an application to graduate.

The Graduation Process

The Graduation Process is unique to the Suzuki Method and serves as an invaluable tool to

educate and develop high standards within the Suzuki training framework.

To graduate, each student must submit/provide the following prior to the closing date:

• A current Membership number (Suzuki Member ID);

• A completed Graduation Form;

• A Graduation Certificate Form; and

• A video link with the recording of the graduation piece

Video Links

Each student, parent or carer will organise a video recording and will provide a video link to

their teacher for revision and approval.

In the video the student will first make a short introduction of himself or herself with the

name of the graduation piece and composer they will perform.

The teacher is the only authorised person that can present a video link for assessment to

the graduation assessor.

Following evaluation, the assessor will write a Graduation Report, including feedback, and

will return the results to the student’s teacher.

The Graduation Piece

All graduation pieces and graduation levels are important. Through each graduation level

the student develops the skills necessary for playing later repertoire. It is important that

each piece is mastered to its highest level to make consistent and adequate progress in the

future. In some cases this may mean taking longer and moving further through the book and

coming back to the graduation piece before recording it.
