    SALES CHANGES WORKFORCE CHANGESThe SV150 as a group boosted employment in 2011 to a record 1.2million jobs, up 12.2 percent from the year before and the biggest gainin three years. Nearly three out of four companies added workers lastyear, with the median increase being 8.2 percent.

    SALES PER EMPLOYEESales per employee among the SV150 in 2011 broke the record level setthe year before, climbing by more than $23,000, or 4.7 percent, to$514,563. The gains were hardly uniform, however, with the medianperformance being a gain of $1,700 per employee, or half of 1 percent.

    BIGGEST PROFITSNet profits among the SV150 climbed 22.1 percent in 2011 to $101.1billion, after jumping 74.5 percent the year before. However, the numberof companies that reported drops in net profit last year rose to 74

    nearly triple the number that saw profit declines the year before.

    Market value is the number of shares outstanding for each companymulitplied by its price. The combined value of the SV150 rose 15.8percent over the past year to $1.79 trillion as of March 30. Thatfollowed an 11 percent gain the year before. More than half the SV150companies saw their value drop over the past year.

    BIGGEST LOSSESForty six companies among the SV150 reported net losses in 2011,up from 34 the year before. The biggest loss was recorded bySunPower, the San Jose maker of solar products. More than half of

    its loss came from reductions in the value of some its assets relatedto changes in European incentives for solar power.

    These companies saw the biggest percentage increases in theirmarket value over the past year. Apple became the world's mostvaluable company last year.     BEST PROFIT MARGINSProfit margin is net profit divided by sales. The SV150 had a recordmargin of 16.3 percent in 2011, up from the previous record of 15.7percent the year before. While the group's margin increased by six-

    tenths of a percentage point, the median change was actually adecline of two-tenths of a point.

    One way to see how investors value a company is by looking at whatthey are willing to pay for it relative to its sales. The ratio is calculatedby dividing the company's market value by its sales over the pastfour quarters. Investors valued the SV150 as a group at 2.9 timessales as of March 30, down from 2.94 the year before.

    Combined sales for the SV150 rose 17.5 percent in 2011 after climbing16.5 percent the year before. The median growth rate among thecompanies was 10 percent. The number of companies reportingsales declines, however, more than doubled to 39, up from 19 theyear before.
