“Yoga is arresting the fluctuations of the mind, as said in the Yoga Sutras:

citta vrtti nirodha. When the mind is without any movement, maybe for a

quarter of an hour, or even a quarter of a minute, you will realize that

yoga is of the nature of infinite awareness, infinite knowing.”

~ Sri T. Krishnamacharya in an interview at 100 years (excerpt from Krishnamacharya: His Life and Teachings)

SVASTHA: THE PATH TO ONE’S SELF

The aim of Svastha Yoga Institute is to share the benefits to body and mind of the ancient science of Yoga. The word Svastha in Sanskrit literally means “to stay as your self” and refers to the state of optimal health and balance in body and mind.

Svastha Yoga is based on the teachings of the legendary yogi Sri T. Krishnamacharya as passed on by his long time students A.G. and Indra Mohan, founders of Svastha Yoga and Ayurveda in Chennai, India. Rather than a ‘standardized’ style of yoga, Svastha Yoga offers an integrated approach, whereas each individual’s unique requirements and goals are honored.

Instruction emphasizes personalization by adapting exercises to suit individual needs and abilities. All instruction—from dynamic and physically challenging to meditative and restorative—is guided by an underlying set of principles which include:

•Synchronizing the postures with the breath as a way to enhance structural integrity of the spine, ensure safety, and concentrate and deepen awareness of the practice

•Breathing properly so as to have a positive effect on the mind and body

•Sequencing and modifying postures intelligently (Vinyasa Krama) to maximize the benefits of practice

•Maintaining steadiness and comfort in mind and body •Increasing strength and flexibility

•Adapting postures to address the specific needs and goals of the individual

In order to bring about complete health and balance, Svastha Yoga also considers the mind. Imbalances in the mind are reflected in the breath and body. Similarly, when the breath and body are agitated it affects our thoughts. Besides our own conditioned thought patterns, we are constantly presented with information that overloads our senses. Our modern lifestyle offers any number of distractions and stressors, perpetuating disturbance in the mind. In order to get through the day it’s easy to go on “auto-pilot”, falling into habits of behavior, speech, and thought. The resulting chronic stress affects not only the immune and nervous systems, but also our emotional and mental states.

Svastha Yoga presents a way to break this cycle—to weaken our unconscious habits and to develop new and healthy disciplines of increased awareness and peace of mind. Instruction in pranayama, chanting, and meditation, as well as study of the Yogasutras, are incorporated into wellness and training programs, with an emphasis on personalization and the readiness and desire of the student.

A.G. MOHAN was a personal student of Sri T. Krishnamacharya for 18 years. He co-founded the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in 1976. His books include: Yoga for Body, Breath and Mind, Krishnamacharya: His Life and Teachings, and Yoga Therapy. He has translated one of the most important texts, the Yoga Yajnavalkya.

INDRA MOHAN is one of the few yoga teachers to have received a post-graduate diploma in yoga from Krishnamacharya. She has been teaching yoga for over 30 years. Known for her serene demeanor, she is a source of support and wisdom to her many students around the world. In particular, she is sought out for her knowledge in working with women.

GANESH MOHAN son of A.G. and Indra Mohan, was trained since childhood in yoga and Vedic chanting. He is a doctor, formally trained both in modern medicine and Ayurveda. He is the co-author of Yoga Therapy and Krishnamacharya: His Life and Teachings. He instructs the 500-hour Svastha Yoga therapy training.

NITYA MOHAN daughter of A.G. and Indra Mohan, has been practicing yoga since childhood. She holds a degree in music and is an accomplished singer of classical Indian music. Nitya has released audio cassettes and CDs on Vedic chanting and the Yogasutras of Patanjali. She runs Svastha Yoga and Ayurveda Singapore.

THE SOURCE KRISHNAMACHARYA1888-1989Regarded as the “Father of Modern Yoga,” Sri T. Krishnamacharya was one of the greatest influences in the last century on the field of yoga. Most styles of yoga today have been influenced or are derived from his teachings. Krishnamacharya was a yogi, healer, and scholar, holding the equivalent of doctoral degrees in all six systems of traditional Indian philosophy and Sanskrit grammar.
