Dear friends, sisters and brothers!

I cordially greet you all from our Velehrad, California. We are in Lent, a time to prepare for Easter. We experience it in an atmosphere like never before. We can say that we are experiencing it in the shadow of the threat to the whole of mankind by a coronavirus, which is the topic No. 1 worldwide today.

Different measures are taking place. Surely we must not underestimate anything, but at the same time, we must not lose confi dence in the presence of the living Lord Jesus. In this challenging time, we can and should realize that we are not masters of life.

Yes, today is a great test and a challenge for us. The challenge of refl ection, the challenge of surrendering to God’s loving arms again and again. To restore confi dence in Him, to surrender to God everything we experience, our apprehensions, our fears, our loved ones, and our families, all humanity, all creation. The Lord God has never abandoned his creation, it was we, God’s creation, who have moved away from the Creator.

This year’s Lent and this year’s Easter celebration in our homes, in particular, invites us to deepen our personal relationship with the risen Jesus. From the bottom of my heart, I wish all of us good luck.

I want to assure you that I think of all of you daily during a Holy Mass service, and in my prayers.

I wish you and all your loved ones a blessed and happy Easter. May our daily encounter with the living Jesus strengthens us and renews our faith, hope, and love!

God bless us all and protect us!Yours Fr.Libor

P.S.I also would like to invite you to a celebration of the Sunday services and the whole holy week, here in the chapel of our Velehrad. And please don’t be discouraged by the apparent complexity of the online connection. If I could do it, I’m sure you can do it too ! L.

Covid-19: Pope urges governments to act for the common good

Pope Francis opens his letter, dated March 28 and addressed to Dr. Roberto Andrés Gallardo, President of the Pan American Committee of Judges, by saying that “we are all concerned about the growth of the pandemic”.

Though the virus is spreading rapidly, the Pope says he is encouraged “by the reaction of so many doctors, nurses, volunteers, religious and priests, who put their lives at risk” in order to protect others.

The Pope recognises that some governments have taken “exemplary measures” and have well-defi ned priorities to defend the population”. Although some of these measures may be considered ‘irritating’ by some, the Pope acknowledges that they are put in place “for the common good”, and that most people “accept them and carry them forward with a positive attitude”.

Pope Francis responds to a letter from the President of the Pan American Committee of Judges for Social Rights and Franciscan Doctrine, addressing the issues of measures adopted by governments to defend their populations against the Covid-19 virus.

An Act of Spiritual CommunionSpiritual communion is a prayer to which all who, for whatever reason, cannot accept Jesus under the methods of bread and wine are invited. It is an expression of the desire to meet the living Lord, a request that a good God hears. In this prayer, we are connected to a church that calls, “Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! ”

When we celebrate the Eucharist, when we receive the body and blood of the Lord, we are not receiving something but instead, someone - the Lord Himself, Jesus Christ crucifi ed and risen, comes to us. He’s alive.

The Risen Lord came to the apostles hidden behind closed doors, as the Gospels of Easter assured us. He knows ways to meet us through

The governments that are tackling the crisis in this way are showing that “the people” are their priority, says the Pope. This is an important decision because we know that “defending the people” results in “economic disaster”, he adds.

“It would be sad to opt for the contrary”, says the Pope as any other way would result in the death of many, many people.

Pope Francis then refers to a meeting held with the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development in which they refl ected on “the now” and “the later”.

Preparing for “the later” is important, says the Pope, and some of the consequences are already noticeable and need to be addressed. One of these, for example, is hunger.

Pope Francis ends his letter by referring to the opinion of economist Mariana Mazzucato in her book “The Value of Everything: Making and Taking in the Global Economy”. Her book explores the need to rethink value, explaining how giving more importance to value rather than price will help make the world a better place. “I think it helps to think about the future” says the Pope.

Finally, the Pope sends his wishes to Dr Gallardo and his family, and, as is his custom, asks that they pray for him, too.

These prayers can also be used as an alternative to “spiritual communion.”:

My Jesus,I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.Amen.

Or:

My Jesus,I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.Never permit me to be separated from You.Amen

our physical impossibility. He knows the ways to come in spite of all the locked doors.

The Risen Jesus is not limited to His sacraments, only to the ways of bread and wine. For he is present in his word: he speaks when he reads the Holy Scripture. Even then he is present when the church prays and sings, as promised: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”

In the tradition of the Church we fi nd so-called “spiritual communion”, inspired by faith and loving desire for realization and continuous growth of lasting unity with Christ in His Spirit. According to the teachings of the Church, this “spiritual communion” is a real personal encounter with Jesus, for it causes the grace that the sacrament of the Eucharist gives, without its own - physical - acceptance of this sacrament.

A short guide to Holy WeekEvery year Christians commemorate the week before Easter Sunday with special traditions and devotions that help them enter into the Passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a special time of the year, culminating in the biggest feast of the Church’s calendar – Easter. Here are the basics of what Catholics look forward to during the week that precedes Easter Sunday.

Palm SundayThis day inaugurates Holy Week with the triumphal entrance of Jesus in Jerusalem. In the Gospels Jesus comes to the city riding upon a donkey with the people placing palm branches in front of him. At Mass on this day the congregation relives this event with a procession in the church and a solemn blessing of palm branches. The Passion narrative is also read on this day.

Holy ThursdayJesus makes his fi nal preparations and celebrates the Last Supper with his apostles. Here at Sacred Heart, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated at 7:00 pm. The theme for today is the institution of the Eucharist and the sacrament of the priesthood. It is also called “Maundy Thursday” referring to the “mandatum,” Jesus’ commandment to love one another, symbolized by his washing of the feet of the apostles. At the conclusion of the Mass, the Eucharist is processed and placed on a separate altar, called the “altar of repose,” for private adoration until midnight in memory of Jesus’ agony in the Garden on that night.

Good FridayJesus is brought before Pontius Pilate and condemned to death. He takes up his cross and is crucifi ed on Mount Calvary. There is no celebration of Mass on this day. Here at Sacred Heart, we celebrate the Stations of the Cross at noon. The commemoration of Christ’s Passion is celebrated at 7:00 pm, with the recitation of the Passion narrative, veneration of the cross, and the reception of communion in the form of hosts that were consecrated on Holy Thursday and reserved. A special collection taken up on Good Friday goes to support the Church in the Holy Land. Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence for all Catholics.

RESURRECTION SUNDAY

Christ rose from the dead at dawn of the “fi rst day of the week,” or “the fi rst day after Saturday” (Saturday was, according to the Jewish calendar, the last day of the week). With his resurrection, he completed God’s creative and redemptive work. That is why Christians on this day began to meet regularly for the Eucharistic “breaking of bread” and called it “the day of the Lord”. So every Sunday of the year is a “celebration of Easter” - a special presence of Christ’s redemptive act. Only from him can we strengthen our own way of resurrection.

The whole Easter week from this Sunday until the Feast of Divine Mercy is celebrated as one feast day, as the great day of the Lord, with joy and gratitude. Again, it is good to take the time that the joy of belonging to Christ becomes something that shapes our daily lives.

Holy SaturdayThis day is a holy day of “waiting,” when Jesus is said to have “descended into the dead” to bring the just souls who died before his sacrifi ce on the cross to the glories of heaven. The only celebration is the Easter Vigil, which begins at 8:00 pm in the dark and ends in the light of Christ’s resurrection. It is a beautiful liturgy when those coming into the Catholic faith are baptized and confi rmed. The Alleluia and the singing of the Gloria return to the liturgy, and church bells that have been silent through Lent ring joyfully.

Easter SundayChrist is risen! The joyous day of Easter and its liturgy refl ect it with beautiful music, fl owers and decorations. There is often a renewal of baptismal promises at this Mass and a sprinkling of holy water upon all those present. Easter Sunday begins the 50-day season of Easter which concludes with Pentecost Sunday.
