Green ways to remove snow
Several inches of snow piled up outdoors may seem like paradise to children eager for a day off from school and a chance to spend all day outside building a snowman. But adults typically have different views on snow that have more to do with shoveling than sledding.
Though nothing can make removing snow fun for many homeowners, those with their minds on the environment might be glad to learn there are some eco-conscious ways to remove all of that white stuff.
While it might not be g l a m o r o u s , h u m a n -powered snow removal remains the best method of removing snow safely with the least impact to the environment. Ashovel and broom may not be the fastest ways to clear driveways and walkways, but they have little impact on the environment. Shoveling produces no toxic side effects that can damage plants, animals and even young children. In addition, shoveling snow is an ideal winter exercise, working most areas of the body while providing a cardiovascular workout.
There are several different snow shovels on the market. Ergonomically designed shovels will help reduce injury to the back and shoulders and could make each pass through the snow more efficient. Another option is snow-plow style aluminum shovels that enable shovelers to plow the snow toward the lawn, saving them the effort of lifting and tossing snow.
S t a n d a r d s h o v e l i n g may be easier than us ing a mechanical blower, especially when the snowfall was not significant. However, snow blowers may be more effective after a particularly heavy or thick snow. Electric
snow blowers are better environmentally than gas-powered blowers. If you have solar panels, then no additional energy is needed to fuel the electric blower. However, electric blowers are not as powerful as those powered by gas. If you must purchase a gas blower, opt for one that runs on diesel fuel. This way you can use a more eco-friendly alternative bio-diesel, such as discarded cooking oil, to fuel the snow blower.
When snowfall is not significant, you may not need to shovel at all. Abrasive materials like wood ash and sand can make walkways less slick. Furthermore, dark ash will absorb the sun’s rays and help to melt the snow faster. Use sand sparingly because it can clog storm drains and add to excess silt in streams and rivers. Other products can be used for traction, including a product called EcoTraction(R) which uses hydrothermal volcanic mineral to provide traction.
If you are like the many who rely on a salt product to de-ice, choose a less harmful alternative. Salt runoff can damage plants and irritate pet paws, so choose a calcium magnesium acetate de-icer instead. Though a calcium magnesium acetate de-icer is not necessarily ideal for the environment, such products are more eco-friendly than salt-based products.
Homeowners who live in areas that get heavy snowfall may want to hire a snow removal company. One truck plowing a neighborhood is better for the environment than severa l homeowners firing up individual snow blowers. Otherwise, think about investing in a radiant heating system that can be built into driveways. The warm driveway will melt away ice and snow. This relies on electricity, which is not as harmful to the environment if that electricity comes by way of solar power.
Snow removal is a chore few look forward to. But eco-conscious homeowner s shou ld know that there are environmentally friendly ways to remove snow.

storing your rain barrel for
the winter, consider the
following tips.
* It is best to disconnect
the downspout from the
rain barrel and reattach the
gutter extension to funnel
water away from the
foundation of the house.
* Make sure the rain barrel
is empty. Frozen water
expands as it forms into
ice, and it can crack the
rain barrel.
* Flip the rain barrel over
so that it will not collect
any rain or snow and
store it in an out-of-the-
way area outside. If you
have enough room, you
may want to store the
barrel indoors in a garage,
basement or storage shed.
* Take in any hoses so they
do not freeze and crack
from the cold weather.
How to rake leaves
more efficiently
Raking leaves is a fact of
life for many homeowners.
Cool autumn weather and
less sunlight are signals
to certain trees that it is
time to shed their leaves.
A leafless tree is more
capable of conserving
energy and riding out
the winter successfully.
Trees also shed their
leaves during periods of
drought or if they have
produced too many leaves
in the summer and need to
conserve water.
For homeowners, fallen
leaves can be an unsightly
nuisance that can stain
concrete and smother
lawns, especially when
fallen leaves are not
promptly removed. Raking
is a timely task many
homeowners dread. But it
is possible to cut down on
the time it takes to clear a
yard of all those unsightly
leaves.
* Wait for the majority
of leaves to drop before
beginning your work. If
you start too early in the
season, you may end up
raking multiple times and
that is not time-efficient.
* Use the technology at
your disposal. If the grass
is still growing, you can
use a mulching mower to
take care of some of the
leaves. The mower will
shred the leaves and create
nutrients for the soil and
the lawn. However, once
the lawn stops growing
you do not want to cut it
too short. This is when it
is time to take out the rake.
A composting vacuum
and leaf blower are other
ways to make quick work
of cleaning up leaves.
Although these devices
may not be as eco-
friendly as a rake, they can
significantly reduce the
time it takes to clear a yard
of fallen leaves.
* Remember to rake
downwind. It is a good
idea to save raking for
a day when it is not too
breezy; otherwise, you
may end up raking the
same spots over and over.
Handle small spots at one
time and rake the leaves
into small piles. Then
you can easily transfer
the leaves to a tarp or bag
and set aside for disposal
or deposit them into your
compost heap.
* Invest in a lightweight
leaf rake and a good
pair of gloves. Being
comfortable while doing
the work will make it
go more smoothly and
quickly, and a lightweight
rake won’t be too taxing,
while gloves will prevent
the formation of blisters.
In addition, take breaks to
rest and recharge.
* Move your feet as you
rake so your arms and
back are not doing all of
the work. Think of it as
dragging the leaves more
so than just shuffling them
around. The more leaves
you can gather in one
pass of the rake, the more
quickly the job will go.
* Spread the work around.
Sharing the task with others
certainly cuts down on the
time it takes to clear the
yard. Have a leaf-raking
party in which members of
the household each pitch
in before everyone enjoys
a well-deserved backyard
barbecue.
Although raking leaves
may not be the average
homeowner ’s favorite
activity, it is a healthy
one. Various muscles are
worked when raking,
which also is a good form
of cardiovascular exercise.
In fact, a person who
weighs 180 pounds can
expect to burn more than
350 calories raking leaves
for an hour.

GOOD NEWS For Seniors!
How to get your home ready for
holiday guests
Hosting family members for the holidays is a great way to spend quality time with loved ones during a special time of year. For many families, the holidays are the one time each year when everyone can get together regardless of where they live or how demanding their commitments to work and family can be.
When families gather for the holidays, many people often find themselves playing host to distant relatives. Accepting such hosting duties is an act that comes with many responsibilities, including readying the home for overnight guests. The following are a few ways hosts can prepare their homes for holiday guests.
* Take inventory of linens. Overnight guests mean you will need extra bed linens, blankets and pillows. Take inventory of your linen closet now, and inspect each set of sheets to make sure they are still usable. If sheets are ragged or the blankets have thinned, purchase new linens so your guests feel as if they’re at home and don’t get cold overnight. If your linen closet is fully stocked with quality linens, clean them in the days leading up to your guests’ arrival.
* Buy some night lights. You might be familiar enough with your home’s layout in the dark, but your guests likely won’t have that same sense of familiarity. Purchase a few night lights for the hallways and restrooms so guests can easily get around should they need to get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom.
* Childproof your home if necessary. Kids can be curious, so holiday hosts without children of their own should childproof their homes before any guests arrive with kids in tow. Move hazardous materials to high shelves that kids can’t reach, and make sure any prescription medications are also out of reach of youngsters. If your home has any steep staircases, consider purchasing some child gates or asking your guests to bring their own gates to reduce the risk of young kids falling down your stairs.
* Stock up on toiletries and other essentials. Replenish your supply of toiletries before guests arrive. Stock up on toilet paper, tissues, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion in the days leading up to the holidays. In addition, consider buying kitchen items like paper towels, napkins, plastic cutlery, and paper plates. Paper plates may come in especially handy, saving you the trouble of having to load up the dishwasher after meals in which paper plates and plastic cutlery would have sufficed.
* Give your common areas a thorough cleaning. Any common areas of the home, including the foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen, and restrooms, should be given a thorough cleaning prior to your guests’ arrival. Clean any bedrooms where guests will be staying as well. You don’t need to devote as much time to cleaning your own bedroom or home office, but make sure these rooms are presentable as well.
* Clean out the closets. If your hall closets are largely used for storing miscellaneous items, clean them out for the coming days to make room for your guests’ coats, jackets, scarves, hats, and shoes. Moving these items, be it to the garage, a backyard shed or the basement, can be temporary, but you will need your closets to serve a more traditional purpose while your guests are in town for the holidays.
Snow on the roof can be troublesome
A snow-covered landscape can be a picturesque sight. However, a roof covered in snow is something no homeowner can afford to marvel at. That’s because accumulating snow and ice very well could push a roof to its breaking point, even if the roof was sound before the winter arrived.
According to The University of Arkansas division of Agricultural Cooperative Extension Service, the water content of snow can range from 3 percent for very dry snow to 33 percent for wet, heavy snow. A roof may only be able to support 12 inches of wet, heavy snow before it is pushed to its breaking point. Snow can be quite heavy, weighing around 60 pounds per cubic foot. When heavy snow arrives, homeowners should do their best to safely clear their roofs of snow.
The threat of snow causing a roof to collapse has many homeowners floundering. While having snow build up on the top of a house is dangerous, so, too is climbing up on a slippery roof to push off the snow. As winter approaches, many emergency officials urge people to clear their roofs and decks to minimize structural collapse. But how does one do it safely?
Steep-pitched roofs tend to be the easiest to deal with snow and ice problems because a snow rake is usually effective. A snow rake is just what it sounds like. It is a metal device on a telescoping pole that can be extended to drag the snow off of the roof.
Homeowners may need to use extension ladders to reach taller parts of the roof. A second person can remain below to steady the ladder and ensure it doesn’t tip over on a slick surface.
It is not adviseable to climb up on the roof directly and shovel the snow off. The added weight of a person may be all that’s needed to cause a roof to collapse, potentially resulting in grave injury and considerable roof damage. A snow-covered roof also can be slippery, which could result in a person falling off the roof. Anyone who does not feel secure removing snow from the roof can hire a professional service to do so. Just be sure the service is properly licensed and insured.
In addition to removing the snow from the roof, here are some winter weather home care tips.
* Clean the gutters to remove any debris so that gutters will not become blocked and form ice dams on the roof. In addition, keep gutters and drains free of ice and snow.
* Add insulation to attic floors to prevent heat from the home escaping to the roof and causing ice dams that freeze when snow melts. In addition, make sure the attic is well ventilated so that the temperature inside will remain consistent with outdoors, further preventing snow melt.
* Melted roof snow can leak into homes or pool a round founda t ions , causing rot and other problems. Keep an eye open for any leaks.
* If you live in an area prone to heavy snowfall, a metal roof may be a
good investment. The slippery roof causes snow and ice to slide off. Special features at the end of a metal roof break up the snow before it reaches the ground, preventing large, heavy piles of snow from causing injury when falling to the ground.

Modernize your bathroom with a f r a m e l e s s g l a s s shower enclosure
(MS) -- More homeowners are looking to transform their bathrooms into luxurious, relaxing retreats that feature the looks and amenities of an upscale spa. One way to upgrade the appearance of a bath -- and to lessen the burden of maintaining it -- is to install a frameless shower enclosure with CLARVISTA(R) glass by PPG, a shower glass that features fused-on coating to keep its showroom looks longer than more traditional clear shower glass.
The biggest advantage associated with frameless shower enclosures is that they can add to the overall value of your home if they’re done right. Here are some additional reasons to consider a frameless shower for your new or remodeled bath.
* They’re fashionable. F r a m e l e s s s h o w e r e n c l o s u r e s o p e n a world of possibilities because they perfectly complement durable, high-style surfaces used in the bath such as tile, marble and granite. They also provide a great way to show off distinctive shower heads, faucets and fixtures. Finally, because of their openness and transparency, frameless shower enclosures can make your bath feel bigger than it really is.
* They’re versati le . Frameless doors can be designed to fit any space, making them ideal for bathrooms large and small. And they don’t have to be boxy -- frameless shower enclosures can be circular, oval or triangular. Even standard square or rectangular enclosures can be dressed up with an artfully bowed, patterned or etched glass door.
* They’ re durab le . F r a m e l e s s s h o w e r enclosures look elegant, but one of their most redeeming qualities is toughness . S tandard shower glasses can range in thickness from 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch, which makes them sturdy, structurally sound and safe. Watertight seals prevent leakage, and because there is little to no metal used in frameless enclosures, homeowners never have to worry about replacing corroded parts.
* They’re easy to live with. Let’s face it: we all want to live in our homes for as long as we can. Frameless shower enclosures are a great way to let your home age with you because the entry can be leveled with the floor to create easy access as you become older and less mobile. And frameless glass shower enclosures don’t become passe -- they offer a great way to meld timeless style with ageless accommodation.
* They’re easy to clean. With frameless shower enclosures, there are fewer nooks and crannies where dirt and grime
can accumulate, making them easier to clean than other shower styles. For an added level of clarity and sparkle, homeowners should request Clarvista glass by PPG. The coating for Clarvista glass is fused to the glass, which makes the surface almost impervious to corrosion from water deposits, humidity, soap scum and household cleaners. Simply wipe the wet glass every few days with a dry towel or squeegee, and your shower enclosure can look as new as the first day you had it installed.
To learn more about Clarvista shower glass by PPG or to find a retailer in your area, visit www.ppgclarvista.com or call 1-888-PPG-GLAS (774-4527).
