Interview with Richard Boyd-Barrett, TDSW: Where did yoursupport come from, bothin the ballot box and thecampaign team?

RBB: It was clear therewas a higher turnout thanat the last election.

And much of thatincrease was a biggerturnout in working-classareas and from youngpeople.

We benetted fromnew layers in society whooften dont vote.

Also we have particularconcentrations of supportin areas where we hadbeen involved in leadingor supporting particularcampaigns and strugglesagainst privatisation orwhere local services oramenities were being cutback.

Our campaign teamwas very different incharacter from the otherparties.

It was much younger. It was much more

    working class.It was much more

motivated in the sensethat it was made up of

people who we had metthrough campaigning onlocal, national and eveninternational issues.

    The bigger parties

relied more on moneyand employing peopleto put up posters anddeliver leaets.

SW:How did you fnd thecampaign as a whole?

RBB: I think we gotslightly squeezed byLabours argument: Weneed to put Labour intogovernment to soften theworst excesses of a FineGael government.

Labour issued lettersappealing to theirsupporters not to transferto me.

Fine Gael on thedoorsteps were telling

    people the same.So given that

concerted campaignand the reduction ofseats in the constituencyit was really quitean extraordinaryachievement for us to winthe seat.

    And I think that was

largely a result of therespect we built up forbeing active campaignersfor local issues.

SW: As for the media doyou think there was biasor scaremongering aboutthe campaign?

RBB: We did get somecoverage, but generallyspeaking we were notgiven time to set out ouralternative policy agenda.

There was a biastowards dismissing theLeft as cranks who hadno credible alternative.

As for thescaremongering, thereis no doubt that it wassimilar to the Lisbontreaty vote, where thepolitical establishmentsuggested if we voted

against the Lisbon treatythe sky would fall on ourheads.

We had a similarpolitics of fear deployedthis time.

SW:Do you think therevolutions in Egypt andTunisia played a role

    during the campaign?

RBB: Yes, very oftenwhen we were talkingto people who were

despondent about thesituation in this countrywe explained that wewanted to see massmovements of peoplepower like the ones inTunisia and Egypt tochallenge the austerityof the IMF/EU and theestablishment.

And these argumentsreally did resonate withworking-class and youngpeople.

The model of peoplepower, popular andworkers resistance inEgypt is a very importantexample of the wayforward.

    SW:So what next for theULA?

RBB: There are threeimmediate tasks we mustorganise around.

Firstly, the newgovernment is going toEurope with a view to geta renegotiation of the

    IMF/EU deal.We need to insist

    on an Icelandic-type

approach where thisrevised deal is putbefore the people in areferendum and a fulland detailed discussioncan be had over theausterity package.

Secondly we need todemand, especially ofthe Labour Party, that the

Universal Social Chargeis reversed and replacedwith a progressive

taxation system wherethe wealthy pay their fairshare.

Finally, we need todevelop concrete andrealistic proposals forgetting people back towork.

This would include apublic works programme

instead of putting moremoney into the banks.

Beyond that we wantto develop the ULA tobecome a major force on

the left, especially giventhat Labour are goingto prop up a Fine Gaelgovernment that is goingto wreak such damage onworking people and thevulnerable.

An important thing tostress is that any neworganisation would haveto be broad and hasto embrace those whooppose the neoliberaland cuts agenda butarent necessarily familiarwith socialist politics inthe traditional sense.

So I think this newradical party has to bebroad and accessible.

    Certainly the election

results do indicate asignicant swing to theleft from a very wide layerof people.

That was reected inthe vote for the ULA andalso a number of leftindependents.

So we have to build onthat and quite quickly.

They agreed a commonprogramme o demands and toco-ordinate urther action.

It is our opinion that i thisrevolution does not lead to theair distribution o wealth it isnot worth anything, they saidin a statement released aterthe meeting.

Freedoms are not com-plete without social reedoms. The right to vote is naturallydependent on the right to a loao bread.

The programme goes beyondeven the most ar-reachingdemands raised in waves ostrikes in the years beoreHosni Mubaraks all.

In addition to calling or arise in the national minimumwage, the workers demand that

the maximum wage shouldbe no more than 15 times theminimum wage.

DemandThe struggles o ixed-termworkers are relected in theprogramme, which calls ora complete end to temporarycontracts, and job security orall manual and clerical workers, peasants and proessionals.

A key demand is the dissolu-tion o the state Egyptian Trade

Union Federation, which was acentral pillar o the old rulingparty and Mubaraks regime.

    The programme also calls or:

lRenationalisation o all priva-tised enterprises and a completestop to the inamous privatisationprogramme.lComplete removal o corruptmanagers who were imposed oncompanies in order to run themdown and sell them o.lCurbing the employment oconsultants who are past the ageo retirement and who eat up threebillion o the national income, inorder to open up employmentopportunities or the young.

lReturn to the enorcemento price controls on goods andservices in order to keep pricesdown and not burden the poor.lThe right o Egyptian work-ers to strike, organise sit-ins, anddemonstrate peaceully, includ-ing those striking now against theremnants o the ailed regime.

Several o the signatories aremembers o unions that oundeda new, independent trade unionederation in Tahrir Square on25 January.

Workers rom the sugar reineries in Al-Fayyum andHawamidiyya, public transport,Tura Cement Co, pharmaceutical

workers, postal workers, employ-ees in the Umar Eendi depart-ment store, and representatives othe Property Tax collectors wereamong the 40 representatives atthe meeting.

This declaration is an impor-tant step, as it brings together apowerul group o trade unionactivists to assert their determina-tion to achieve the revolutionssocial goals.

Nothing approaching thislevel o co-ordination between

strike leaders has been achievedin Egypt or decades, and theirdemands look ar beyond the cur-rent capitalist system.

Ym dictatr th rTHE YEMENI people havetaken to the streets, calling orthe resignation o the dictatorAli Abdullah Saleh.

In response, Saleh, who hasbeen in power or three decades, has announced he will stepdown in 2013 and that his son,who many expected to takeover, will not seek oce.

However, while Saleh ispublicly calling or talks withopposition leaders, his securityorces and hired thugs aresuppressing demonstrations.

In the southern city o Adenon Sunday, police shot a 17-year old man dead. He is the 9thprotester to be killed since theprotests began.

On the mouth o the Red Seaand the Gul o Aden, Yemen

is strategically vital or accessto the Sue Canal. The USconsiders Saleh a key ally in theMiddle East.

While the latest wave oprotests were inspired by themass movements across theMiddle East, Salehs regime hasbeen embattled or some time.

Last year millions o peoplein the south took to the streets, demanding succession romthe north. These protests wereviolently suppressed. Beore

1990, the north and south wereseparate countries.

The US backed the northwhile the south was in theRussian sphere o infuence.

Ater the Cold War they unied, but a civil war broke out in 1994.

This saw the imposition othe dominance o the northerngovernment based in Sanaa.

What is signicant aboutthe current uprising is thatresistance has not beenrestricted to the south.

Protests have also taken placein Sanna, meaning that Salehscorrupt and brutal dictatorshiphas never seemed weaker.Tim Nelson

    WITH UPRISINGS in the Middle

    East, many will analyse and

    compare past revolutions for

    insights.

Fidel & Che: A revolutionaryfriendship, although it gives some

    insight into the Cuban revolution

does not give enough detail to fully

    understand that period.

It was not until the 1980s

    that serious biographies of Castro

began to emerge, and in the mid

    1990s many works on Guevara

    followed.

    According to the author, this

is the rst book that uses many

    archived sources to put together

    their story.

    Reid-Henrys objective of

writing the book was to give

    an understanding of what he

believes to be the most important

    friendship of the twentieth century.

To him their friendship was as

relevant as Marx and Engels, and

Trotsky with Lenin.Their relationship differs from

other political double acts as it was

lived out during just a few short

    intense years.

    An early detailed account

of both of their lives helps to

    understand their different

    personalities

At rst Fidel appears to be the

more interesting of the two with his

    early political activism.

    However as their lives unfold,

Guevara who is introvert and quiet,

    emerges as the most fascinating

    character.

After reading I did not come

away thinking they were quite the

    Marx and Engels.

The book does bring to life thedanger and intense emotions of a

    revolutionary period.

    But to really acquire knowledge

of the Cuban revolution or South

    American politics a deeper political

    and less biographical context is

    required.

    A good introduction is Mike

    Gonzalez book: Che Guevara and

    the Cuban Revolution.
