ideological roots in theneoliberal onslaught that wehae suered oer the past 30

ears.Neoliberalism seeks to

extend market relations,buing and selling, oer allaspects o human lie.

In this context the publicsector and state assets areseen as bad, and the priatesector and markets are good.

Thus, rom the 1980s

onwards, there hae beenpriatisations o state assetsrom utilities to hospitals,schools and more across theglobe.

Eircom case

In Ireland, priatisation hasnot been as common as insome other countries, partlbecause o a lack o stateassets to priatise.

Howeer, one caseillustrates the ailures opriatisation in Ireland: Eircom.

Supposedl an exampleo popular share-owningcapitalism, Eircom has nowgone through e dierentowners since it was priatisedin 1999.

Each owner has extractedprots through asset-strippingthe compan resulting inpoorer serices, job losses andmounting debts.

When Eircom was rstpriatised nearl 600,000people bought shares.

The directors sold oprotable parts o thebusiness most notabl Eircell.

In the process those whobought shares lost a third otheir mone.

Two ears later in 2001 agroup o enture capitalistsincluding Ton OReill boughtthe compan.

OReill and his croniessought to sweat the remainingassets, stopped inestmentand in 2004 sold the businesspocketing huge prots: the topour Eircom managers werepaid 29 million.

In 2010 the OECDreported Ireland was 29th outo 30 countries or broadbandspeed.

Last month the latestowners o Eircom announced

pa cuts o 10% and 1,000redundancies. The ate oEircom is not exceptional.
