Nadia’s storyI grew up in Somalia in Africa. My family lived in a small village in the country. Soon after I was born, the war started. When I was a child, I didn’t think it was unusual to see soldiers everywhere. We lived in a huge house and we loved running around it and playing with all our cousins and friends. We played sports, climbed trees … I have so many happy memories of my childhood. But things started to get more dangerous and life became difficult. Even everyday things were hard to get. We had to walk a long way to get food every day. Our water system stopped working so we had to go to a well, far from the village, to get water.

One day my dad decided we should leave. We had to leave our house at midnight when everyone was sleeping because it was safer. We took nothing, just clothes and food. We left everything in the house and left. It was hard leaving my home, but we were lucky. Bad things happened to many of the people who weren’t able to leave.

My life has changed a lot since we moved to England. There are more opportunities for me here than there were in Somalia. Now I can make plans for my future. But I miss my grandparents in Somalia. I write to them often. They always want to hear about life in England. I miss many things about Somalia, but England is my home now.
