While teens today are more ambitious,they may face toughest challenge yetTODAYS teenagers are the most ambitious ina century, according to a new report.

The study also found they are the most con-cerned with making a difference to society intheir careers, but are struggling against thecomplex and challenging job market.

The research was commissioned by theNational Citizen Service youth programme

ahead of the centenary of the First WorldWar.It found that 79 per cent of modern teens

say career success is important to them, com-pared to 58 per cent of the Greatest Genera-tion (born 1901-1924) and 62 per cent of BabyBoomers (1943-1960).

Todays teens, Generation Citizen (1995-2001), were found to be the most entrepre-neurial of all the generations, with eight percent aspiring to start their own business,compared to only four per cent of GenerationX (1961-1982).

Modern teens were also shown to be themost likely to see the purpose of work asmaking a difference to society. Almost a fifth

(17 per cent) of the upcoming generation seework as a means to make a difference.

Just 10 per cent of Baby Boomers felt thesame way, with 76 per cent seeing work as away of earning a living.

Dr Heather Ellis, senior lecturer in historyof education at Liverpool Hope University,said: By looking at modern teens Gen-eration Citizen against a backdrop of thegenerations before them, this research sug-gests that we are actually looking at the mostambitious, entrepreneurial and, interestingly,most altruistic generation since the wargenerations.

But despite their levels of ambition andcommunity spirit, todays teenagers are en-tering the most complex and challenging jobsmarket in 100 years, according to the study.

Some 92 per cent of moder n teens expect toencounter challenges when looking for long-term employment.

This figure is higher than any generationbefore them, increasing from 45 per cent ofthe Greatest Generation to 57 per cent of the

Silent Generation (born 1925-1942), 74 per centof Baby Boomers, 87 per cent of Generation Xand 91 per cent of Generation Y (1983-2001).

Dr Ellis said: With the introduction of thewelfare state, free secondary education andhealthcare, the Baby Boomers were the firstgeneration not to have to worry about goinghungry, being unable to afford to see a doctor,or not having enough money to further theireducation.

In contrast, Generation Y and GenerationC, growing up against the background of therecent financial crisis and economic reces-sion, are much more acutely aware of manyof the issues that worried the war genera-tions such as financial security and support-ing their families.

Almost half of the Silent Generation (48 percent) expected to have a job for life, while 19per cent of todays teens agree with this.

The research also shows that GenerationCitizen do not feel as prepared as they couldbe for the complexities of todays jobs mar-ket. Almost one in four (24 per cent) cited a

lack of training, 23 per cent said tconfidence in their own abilities wper cent said not being able to affoan intern or volunteer was a key bsecuring long-term employment.
