B y tragic coincidence the bodies of two North Arlington b o y s have- been returned to this country from their o v e r s e a s graves on the same ship.

They serve to point up sharply for us, at least, some arguments in favor of Congressman Towe's I 'n i versa I Training Bill.

We are not wholly in favor of it.But the return of the bodies of the North Arlington

boys makes a striking argument in favor of the bill. One of the boys had been in service only seven month*

—the other just short of a year. Yet they had been hurled pell mell into the most violent of fighting.

There is no guarantee that had either of the youth* properly trained they would not have been killed in some grotesque working of their own particular destiny.

But most military men agree that if they had been properly trained they would have increased their chances for survival.

What happened to them?Well, they were overtaken by the exigencies of war.The military never intended them to *see action until

they were properly trained. But in one ease the Battle of the Bulge made, in the

eyes of the military, his calling up necessary. In the other the invasion of France made it imperative that be bear arms in the worst of battle.

When need demands, the military asks no questions. A man in uniform becomes part of what is nicely described a s a "‘calculated risk.”

If military training had prevailed before the war. •what may have happened?

1. The boys would have received at least one year *»f- sound, basic training.

2 . In the luxury of peacetime affairs, they would have

Conference On Vocational Guidance At F< D. College

1>een scrutinized carefully, evaluated and given a proper function in the military setup.

These are strong arguments in favor of/RcpreHentative Towe’ii bill. We urge you to read the story of tlu*»r death* on Page 1 today. Then think again about universal military training.

We’ve been giving it a lot of serious thought after having talked to the swollen-eyed, grief-stricken mother* of the heroes.
