The Joy of Giving
Somehow, not only for Christmas,
But all the long year through,
The joy that you give to others
Is the joy that comes back to you;
And the more you spend in blessing
The poor and lonely and sad,
The more of your heart’s possessing
Returns to make you glad.
– John Greenleaf Whittier
I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas
“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas,
Just like the ones I used to know”
But if I should run out of the white
I will gladly drink the red though.
- Paul Curtis

WARCOP PARISH COUNCIL
SUMMARY OF LAST PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The parish council’s 4th Defibrillator has now been installed in the old BT phone box andis now Live. The Chairman has asked if District Councillor Patterson would put in a request at the next meeting at EDC for a garden waste skip for Sandford. A lot of the trees in the cemetery have been cut back and there will be some on-going maintenance work being done throughout the next few months. The residents of Sandford asked if the parish council would purchase some bulbs for the village. PC Vacancy – the parish council have had 2 applicants who will be invited to attend the next parish council meeting. Highways have agreed to tarmac the area around the bus shelter as this area tends to flood very easily. Sandford residents held a meeting and have come up with a number of ideas for improvements which the PC hope to support e.g. bulb planting, dog waste bin and other waste bins. This is a brief summary of the last parish council meeting. A full copy of the minutes are available on request or visit warcop.org.uk

STAINMORE WI The November meeting was held in the Church Hall, Church Brough. Twenty-one members enjoyed listening to our speaker John Natlacen as he explained how he came to own the Village Stores in Barbon, near Kirkby Lonsdale, selling artisan cheeses and offering lunches and special evening dining on Fridays. He obviously loves his cheese and he even makes cakes for special occasions with cheese. He showed us a picture of one of his cakes. It had a large round truckle of Cheddar as a base with a pork pie on top, then a smaller cheese on the top, all decorated with grapes and passion fruit etc. He called it his `Piggy in the middle` cake. He brought several cheeses for us all to try and we had the opportunity to buy the ones that we had enjoyed the most. Lorraine said that John had been our best speaker of the year. Most of us agreed and said that we would like to visit his `Churchmouse Cheese` next year. Christmas is fast approaching and so we need to be sorting out Christmas presents. We will need to include a `Secret Santa` present, ready for our WI Christmas celebration at the Black Bull, Nateby. New venue for 2020 St Michael’s Church hall, Church Brough D Clatworthy

Brough Christmas Walking Advent Calendar
After our successful Scarecrow festival in September I thought it would be a great idea to have a walking advent calendar around
Brough. The idea is that people decorate a window that can be seen easily by the general public, it is decorated and hidden until your big reveal on a specific date in December. There are 24 days before Christmas and the windows will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. You must keep your window hidden until your date and then have a reveal/lights switch on at 5pm on your date. eg. Youth Group – 12 Dec (we will decorate it on 11th Dec and hide it behind curtains. At 5pm on 12th Dec we will open curtains to reveal our Christmas window) There are no prizes and no judging, we just thought it would be a great opportunity to get out and about around the community each day at the same time and watch the windows revealed. I would like to put an article in the Herald about it. It’s open to everyone in Brough/Church Brough but only 1 per house. Some people have asked for specific dates due to work/holiday restrictions and these have been allocated, as The Way doesn’t come out until start of Dec I will put those already booked in at the start. There are still lots of spaces. I will put a list of entrants in the Youth Centre. If we get more than 24 then we could always do 1 reveal at 5 and another at 5.15 so no-one is disappointed. There are no rules as to what is in the window other than lights! It needs to be lit so that people outside can see your display. I’m sure lots of families will walk around so keep it clean and prepare to have people looking at your window (you could shut your curtains behind it to protect your privacy). You also have to be happy for your name and address to be published in the youth centre and shared on social media so that people can be directed to your property. If you would like a window to be entered please text your name and address to Rachel Milburn 07890756760
BROUGH BELLS Restoration update. We are in the process of applying for different legal requirements to be met, then we will be able to apply for a faculty to allow work to proceed. When we get the faculty we will start to apply for grants. Thank you locals and visitors who have donated £5808 towards the Bells. We will continue to chime 3 at the moment. We hope to replace bird proof covers in the bell tower with modern equivalent so that Brough and Stainmore can enjoy hearing them, which is why Mr Brunskill bought the bells in the first place. The History of the bells is displayed in Church, please come and have a read. Will keep you posted, have a lovely Christmas, and a prosperous New Year.
Best wishes, Judy Dobson (Ch. Warden). Proverbs 3v5. `Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths. ' Amen.

Warcop and Sandford W.I. Mrs Maureen Heron (President) welcomed members to the November meeting which was also our Annual General Meeting. Minutes of the 2018 AGM were read accepted and signed. Mrs Valerie Brook (Secretary) gave the Committee’s Annual Report highlighting all the speakers, events and activities which had taken place throughout the year. Mrs Elizabeth Richardson (Treasurer) gave the Financial Report and thanks were expressed to Mrs Pauline Dobinson for auditing the accounts. Mrs Heron gave the President’s address saying that it had been a very busy year and thanked all the members and the Committee, for their hard work and unwavering support and ideas for all the activities and events which had made them such a success. She also stated that although our membership is small and was saddened to have lost a few members due to ill health we were pleased to welcome a couple of new members. Mrs Heron then said that we must continue to pursue our ideals that make our W I so special. The friendship, support and time we give to each other and to the many members who all contribute in big and small ways. She closed by saying ‘ We are all looking forward to the forthcoming events of 2020, celebrating not only the County Federation’s Centenary but also our OWN. Let’s make it a year to remember.’ The Committee was re-elected en bloc and Mrs Jenny Ramsden was also elected to the Committee. Mrs Heron was re-elected as President. Refreshments were provided by the Committee and a short Business Meeting followed. The Coffee morning in Appleby had proved very worthwhile. We are looking forward to our Christmas Get Together with friends in the Parish on Wednesday 4th December 2-4pm in the Methodist Schoolroom Warcop. Items from the W.I. Newsletter were also discussed. We then set about filling our decorated shoe ‘Boxes of Hope’ for children in Romania, with a lovely selection of toiletries, toys, pens, crayons, notebooks, gloves, hats and socks. We were surprised at just how many items we could fit into a shoe box and 17 boxes were completed. We hope to repeat this next year. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 4th December when Carola Frank is our guest and we will be making a ‘Christmas Craft Decoration’ There will be no formal meeting in January as we will be ‘out for lunch’. On the 5th February our meeting will be at Warcop Parish Hall at 7.30pm when our guest speaker will be Kath Wood whose topic is ‘An African Adventure’. Guests are always welcome. Best wishes to everyone for a very Happy Christmas from Warcop and Sandford WI Valerie Brook (Secretary)

Electricity North West’s Priority Services Register The region’s power network operator, Electricity North West, are keen to identify customers who would benefit from extra help during a power cut. Being without power can cause difficulties to many customer groups. When a customer signs up to Electricity North West’s Priority Services Register (PSR), they can be offered extra support free of charge to keep them safe and comfortable until power is restored. Walk of the Month Crosby Ravensworth & Raise Howe
On a fine day, clear views and good walking conditions make this a lovely 5-mile outing in winter or summer, with the Butchers Arms in Crosby Ravensworth making a suitable refreshment stop at the end of your walk. (Check opening times on 01931 715500) Take the B6260 Orton road from Appleby, and after 4 miles turn right sp Maulds Meaburn. Turn left in Maulds Meaburn and park in Crosby Ravensworth 200 yds past the church and by the shelter opposite the Village Hall. There is an information board on the wall of this shelter Walk back towards the church and turn
right through a gate just before the first house on the right. Follow the track to a gate at the end of the field and turn left before this gate. Follow the fence and cross a stile over the fence to follow the Lyvennet Beck, crossing two more stiles and then a third to reach a footbridge over the river. Cross the bridge and follow the path up to a lane. Turn right and follow the lane for 3/4 mile (passing two good seats if you fancy a rest). Turn left to Bank Head Farm, pass through the farmyard and continue up the hill for ½ mile to a road. Turn right for 1/3 mile to a cattle-grid at the corner of a wood on the left. (Take care along the road, it is not a busy road but some traffic can be going fast). Turn left off the road and follow the edge of the wood across rough ground (no footpath). When you reach the top of a slight rise, turn right across open country to the summit of a low hill (Raise Howe), where there are the remains of a tumulus. Keep to the left of the mound and to the right of an old quarry to reach a road. Over to the left you will see a signpost. Cross the road to meet the path from here to Bank Hill, and follow the lovely grassy track which soon drops downhill to meet the tarmac lane at Bank Head. At the bottom of the hill re-cross the footbridge over the beck and turn right towards cottages. Turn left at the lane, and left again near the church. Note the Millenium Stone on your right, and cross Monks Bridge to visit the in-teresting Church of St Lawrence. In the churchyard stands the remains of a Saxon cross, the largest such relic in the county. Can you find the carved head of a man swallowing a mouse on the church tower? From the church a path follows a path on the west side of the beck back to the village centre and the Butchers Arms. Roamin Robin

Great North Air Ambulance – Drop-in, November 3rd – Report In spite of the weather, we were quite busy at mid-day, and also at the start of the evening, which however tailed off after the first hour. The total weight was 712 kilos which is a 59 kilos more than in July. We are remote from emergency hospitals, so the Air Ambulance really can be a life saver, and although it is the NHS ambulance service who decides when to call it, it is entirely dependant on all of us to raise the funds needed to keep it flying. The next drop-in is likely to be the first Sunday in March. So my thanks to everyone who brought donations. No matter how large or small the final total, it ALL helps. Dave Williams 42135
