Izzy Kadetz’s father, Jewish immigrant David Kadetz, left the oppressive policies of czarist Russia for Cincinnati, where in 1901 he opened the first kosher-style delicatessen west of the Alleghenies. The business later passed to his son Izzy, a hard-working if stiff-necked and stubborn character whose theatrics made an impression—whether it was the shouting back and forth between he and his wife Rose or the price of food that varied depending on what you were wearing and

if you looked like you had extra money to spend. Under the leadership of Izzy’s son David, the restaurant’s reputation and business blossomed.

In 1982, David opened a second location on Sixth and Main in downtown Cincinnati. He asked his friend John Geisen to manage the location. Together, John and David grew the business. When John

became President and CEO, he embarked on a mission to instill his passion for quality in everyone at Izzy’s—from store managers to front line staff. This “can-do” culture is seen every day at all Izzy’s locations, whether in response to a simple request for a special sandwich or catering a party for 200 guests. This passion for pleasing patrons explains the fierce loyalty of Izzy’s fans.

Consistently ranked “Best Deli in Cincinnati,” Izzy’s tri-state tradition offers a unique experience that blends great food with friendly and attentive staff, while maintaining the highest in quality and value. Customers no longer sit on wood crates at old pickles barrels, but they enjoy foods made from the homemade recipes Izzy Kadetz received from his father dating to 1901. John is grateful for his fortunate relationship with the entire Kadetz family.

He remembers asking them back in the 1980s, “What do you get when you mix a Jew and a Catholic?” The answer was then as simple and true as it still is today: “Success!”
