TOP 5Costly

Mistakes in NCAA

History1974: A disqualification in the 400 medley relay cost Indiana a seventh-straight NCAA men’s team title. The USC Trojans beat the Hoosiers by one point, 339-338.

2002: Stanford outscored Texas in the swimming portion of the 2002 women’s championships, but with zero diving points—compared to 113 for Texas—Stanford lost the overall team race to the Longhorns by 11 points.

2009: Hayley Degolia’s flinch at the start of the 200 medley relay prelims cost the Arizona Wildcats a likely 40 points—and a chance to repeat as women’s team champions. They finished third to California by 22.5 points.

2010: The chances for the California men’s team to win the team title were hurt when fresh-man Tom Shields was unable to put together two strong swims in a tough double: the 100 fly and 200 free. Just 10 minutes after winning the 100 fly, he scored only one point in the 200 free consolation final. Sean Mahoney’s disqualification in the 200 breast prelims also cost Cal precious points, as the Bears fin-ished second to Texas by 30 points.

2010: Before the women’s cham-pionship meet was held, USC neglected to inform the NCAA it was dropping Ania Kowalczyk from its meet roster, thereby prevent-ing first alternate Anna Crandall of Oregon State from competing in the meet. ❖

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU STARTED TO SWIM, AND DID YOU PLAY OTHER SPORTS?

I started swimming com-petitively in our neighborhood summer league at the age of 5. I played every sport imagin-able—and even some sports that were more backyard games such as stickball. I did not really have a focus on swimming until my junior year of high school.

WHAT DO YOU THINK COLLEGE PROGRAMS CAN DO TO MAINTAIN THEIR SWIM TEAMS?

Nort (Thornton) and our former long-time water polo coach Pete Cutino sought out former aquatic athletes to develop our aquatic endowment 20-plus years ago. We have an endowment that supports our four aquatic sports (men’s and women’s swimming and diving plus water polo). With Nort’s and Pete’s foresight—and the generosity of our aquatic community—we are able to maintain a world-class level within our aquatic sports. Therefore, my advice is simple: start an endowment. Don’t just talk about it...do it!

TOM SHIELDS SWIMMING BACKSTROKE AT NCAAs WAS A SURPRISE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE! TELL US ABOUT THAT.

We believed Tom’s best three indi-vidual events were the 200 free, 100 fly and 200 fly. We asked Tom last year to do the impossible of doubling the 200 free and 100 fly. So, as we moved into this year, we felt that Tom’s 100 fly would be better than his 200 free individually. We spent most of the fall and into January experimenting with the 200 IM, and by the time we arrived at Pac-10s, we felt that Tom could race among the best in the 100 back. He got better every time he raced it, and that is a race in the short course yards format where he will be better for years to come.

Excellence AwardMAXWELLMEDALS & AWARDS

Officials are ALWAYS instructed to give the swimmer the benefit of the doubt.

Why? It all boils down to the basic reason we’re here as officials—for the swimmers. As officials, we want to ensure a fair and competitive atmosphere for all swimmers, regardless of age or ability. In order to provide that, it means that we always give the swimmers the benefit of the doubt.

Put yourself in the official’s shoes. If you’re watching a race and watching four lanes, and you “think” you see a violation, but aren’t 110 percent sure, do you disqualify the swimmer or continue to observe for a clear answer one way or the other?

You give the swimmer the benefit of the doubt and con-tinue to observe.

As an administrative referee, you know that swimmers are required to check in for some races. What if a swimmer doesn’t check in? The rule states that failure to check in means the swimmer may not be seeded for the race. Do you tell the swimmer, “Tough luck,” or attempt as admin referee to find an empty lane that will allow the swimmer to com-plete the event?

You give the swimmer the benefit of the doubt and let them swim.

Hopefully, in each of these instances, the swimmer learns a lesson as well. By giving the swimmer the benefit of the doubt, you instill a sense of fairness. The hope is that the swimmer realizes a mistake was made, but that mistake was handled fairly and, in turn, the swimmer doesn’t repeat the mistake. Who doesn’t need a break from time to time?

The officials, coaches and other volunteers are here for the swimmer. We want the sport to be competitive, but also fun and an activity that teaches more than strokes to the athletes who participate. By giving the swimmer the benefit of the doubt, you help the swimmer learn not only the sport, but also a life lesson. ❖

BENEFIT OF DOUBT...ALWAYS GOES TO THE SWIMMER!

Thanks in large part to Renee Patterson—who has been instrumental in welcoming, train-ing, mentoring and making new recruits feel part of the CCS officials’ family—the number of officials has grown to more than 75. Patterson continues to train and

work with officials in all positions. She spends as much time walking the deck as blowing a whistle or using a microphone. She has served twice as the CCS offi-cials chair. From

2003 to 2006, she was the admin ref-eree and then meet referee (two years in each position) for the Western Zone Championships. She has also served as both admin referee and meet referee at the Western Zone Gold Section Speedo Championships. Locally, she continues to work about 15 meets per year.

2011 OPEN WATER SWIMMING SAFETY CONFERENCE A SUCCESSThe Open Water Swimming Safety Conference, sponsored by USMS and Pacific Masters Swimming, took place in March in San Francisco and included a number of representatives from USMS, as well as life-guarding and lifesaving organizations and current and former open water swimmers, coaches and officials. The conference evaluated cur-rent procedures in open water competitions and outlined potential improvements to the sport given its ever-growing interest and mem-bership. Maddy Crippen, sister of the late Fran Crippen, attended the conference and spoke on behalf of the Fran Crippen Elevation Foundation. Other featured speakers included:

Shelly Taylor-Smith (seven-time World Professional Marathon Swimming champion and athlete advocate), Lewis Gordon Pugh (pioneer swimmer), Jim Wheeler (Pacific Masters LMSC), Steven Munatones (Daily News of Open Water Swimming), Morty Berger (NYC Swim), Dr. Jim Miller (FINA Sports Medicine Committee), Benoit Amyot (Traversee International du lac St-Jean), B. SWEDISH SHORT COURSE CHAMPS FEATURES TWO MASTERS WORLD RECORDSA pair of FINA Masters world records were broken at the

Swedish Short Course Championships held in Sodertalje at the end of March. Olympic champion Lars Frolander and Marika Johansson both posted global marks. Frolander, who won the 100 fly at the 2000 Olympics, clocked a 23.70 in the 50 meter fly. That swim bettered the 24.03 set by Eiji Nomura in the men’s 35-39 age group. Meanwhile, Johansson turned in a 26.96 as the leadoff for SK Nautilus’ mixed 200 free relay. That effort clipped the 27.09 50 free record set by Karlyn Pipes-Nielsen in the women’s 45-49 age group. ❖

THIS MonthIN SWIMMINGSponsored by: THE INTERNATIONALSWIMMING HALL OF FAME

MayFive future ISHOF inductees competed at the first of three events that made up the seventh annual CAN-AM-MEX Diving Series, May 1-2, 1976, in Fort Lauderdale. American Phil Boggs (1985 ISHOF Honor Diver) captured the 3-meter event with a fantastic final forward 2-1/2 with a full twist. Italian Klaus Dibiasi (1981), who placed third, came back in the 10-meter to defeat the Soviet Union’s Sergi Nemensanov by just 1.44 points. Russia’s Irina Kalinina (1990) won the 3-meter title over the USA’s Jennifer Chandler (1987). The bronze medalist in the 3-meter event, Sweden’s Ulrike Knape (1982), went on to defeat Kalinina in the 10-meter.
