Scholarship eligibility/selection criteria To be eligible for a Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship, you must:

• be a Year 12 student and commencing a Swinburne degree in the year after leaving school

• achieve a minimum ATAR of 95.00

• meet the prerequisites of your chosen degree.

NOTE:

• Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarships are not deferrable.

• International students are eligible for consideration.

• SEAS or Bonus Subjects points are not applicable for this scholarship.

How to applyThere is no need to apply for the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship†. As long as you preference a Swinburne degree and achieve an ATAR of 95 or higher you will automatically be offered a Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship and entry into the High Achievers Program. All eligible students will receive an offer message once Year 12 results are released in December (Victorian Year 12) and January (other states and IB).

Accommodation application deadline † While there is no need to apply for the scholarship, students

interested in accommodation for Semester 1 2018 must apply by midnight Monday 15 January 2018. For further information see: www.swinburne.edu.au/current-students/student-support-services/accommodation

Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarships

The Swinburne Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship is a prestigious award to study any Swinburne on-campus degree.

The Scholarship is worth $5000 per annum for the normal duration of your chosen degree* and includes membership into the High Achievers Program, plus a one-off payment of $2000 towards an international study experience.

* Scholarship payments will be suspended for the duration of Industry Placement, this is because students already receive payment as part of the placement.

High Achievers ProgramAt Swinburne we understand that high-performing students need opportunities to develop and excel in their field of interest. This is why we’ve created the High Achievers Program for all Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship recipients.

Being part of this program means you’ll have access to:

• an academic mentor to assist in tailoring your Swinburne study experience to your goals

• leadership workshops

• a guaranteed place in a degree-related study tour

• research or industry projects

• academic or industry mentoring

• networking opportunities to share insights with like-minded peers.

You will also be invited to apply for the Swinburne’s Student Ambassador Program; representing Swinburne at key events.

If you live more than 80km from the Hawthorn campus and apply for accommodation by the required deadline†, you are also guaranteed a place in Swinburne Residences for Semester 1. Accommodation costs are not covered by the scholarship.

Sir Reginald Ansett Scholarship – AviationThe Sir Reginald Ansett Scholarship for Aviation is offered to assist a student with costs associated with aviation studies, enabling them to realise their passion for an aviation career and full academic potential by reducing the need to work outside of study.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $10,000 per year, for a period of three years. The total value of the scholarship is $30,000.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa

• be a commencing student studying full-time in a single or double Aviation or Aviation Management undergraduate degree at Swinburne in Semester 1, 2018

• have completed Year 12 in 2017 (or in 2016, and taken a gap year in 2017)

• achieve a minimum ATAR of 85.00

• provide evidence of financial hardship (documents such as a bank statement, salary slips, centrelink statement and/or personal statement)

• demonstrate a passion for an aviation career in a personal statement of no more than 500 words.

• provide two referee reports outlining the applicant’s suitability for the Scholarship:– Academic reference – from a person qualified to comment on

academic studies, preferably a subject coordinator from the applicant’s secondary school and/or a school principal.

– Character reference – from a current or past employer or a person competent to supply a character reference.

Apollo Fund – First in Family ScholarshipThe First in Family Scholarship is awarded to commencing first business students who will be the first in their family to attend university and who has experienced disadvantage.

Rural and regional students are encourage to apply.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $7500 per year, for a period of three years. The total value of the scholarship is $22,500.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident

• be a commencing first year student studying full-time in an on-campus single or double Business undergraduate degree at Swinburne in Semester 1 in the year the scholarship is awarded.

• provide evidence of being the first in their family to attend university (statutory declaration)

• have no previous university qualifications.

• provide evidence of financial hardship and/or personal hardship (documents such as a bank statement, salary slips, Centrelink statement and/or personal statement)

• provide two referee reports outlining the applicant’s suitability for the scholarship:– Academic reference – from a person qualified to comment on

academic studies, preferably a subject coordinator from the applicant’s secondary school and/or a school principal.

– Character reference – from a current or past employer or a person competent to supply a character reference.

• provide evidence of community participation for things such as extra-curricular service to the community, sporting abilities and leadership qualities (reference letter)

• be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident

• be a commencing student studying full-time in an on-campus single or double Business undergraduate degree at Swinburne in Semester 1, in the year the scholarship is awarded.

• possess sound academic ability, indicating a strong potential to complete the degree within minimum time

Intech Bank Scholarship in Information TechnologyThe Intech Bank Scholarship in Information Technology was established in 2015 to provide support for an undergraduate student studying Information Technology. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for the first year of study in their chosen on campus undergraduate Information Technology course.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $5000.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or a holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa

• have achieved a minimum ATAR (or equivalent) of 80.00

• be a commencing student studying full-time or part-time in a single or double information technology undergraduate degree at Swinburne in Semester 1, in the year the scholarship is awarded

• demonstrate a passion for Information Technology and motivation to succeed in their chosen field in a personal statement of 750 words or less

• provide evidence (documents such as a bank statement, salary slips, Centrelink statement, or other supporting documentations) of financial and educational disadvantage. Disadvantage may include:– financial difficulty or low income– disability or medical condition– delay or interruption to career or studies because of family

responsibilities or illness– relocation from a rural or regional area in order to undertake

tertiary study– English as a second language– identification as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Westpac Young Technologists ScholarshipThe Westpac Young Technologists Scholarships are offered to exceptional scholars who want a diverse and exciting career working at the cutting edge of technological innovation. The scholarships aim to address the current lack of gender balance and diversity in technology graduates. Awarded on merit, the scholarships will help broaden the base of students with the ambition to forge a career in technology.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $5000 per year for the normal duration of the degree up to a maximum of five years.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident

• be aged 26 years or below at 1 January in the year of commencing studies

• have achieved a minimum ATAR of 80.00, or if a direct applicant, be able to demonstrate an equivalent academic record

• be made an offer and enrolled full-time in their first year in an eligible undergraduate degree at Swinburne

• provide a brief cover letter and resume

• provide a copy of ATAR certificate or academic records

• provide a personal statement of no more than 500 words of how the scholarship will assist studies and career goals

• provide two referee reports (written in the last two years) to support their application:– Academic reference – from a person qualified to comment on

their academic studies, preferably a subject coordinator from your secondary school and/or your school principal.

– Character reference – from a person competent to supply a character reference (for example, a current or past employer) outlining their suitability for the scholarship. This statement cannot be written by someone related to you.

Students must be enrolled in one of the following on-campus degrees:

Alba Sorati Scholarship for WomenThe Alba Sorati Scholarship is awarded to support female students from disadvantaged backgrounds to undertake or continue tertiary education in engineering, information technology or science.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $2000.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or a holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa

• be a female commencing or current student studying full-time in an on-campus single or double undergraduate/postgraduate degree in engineering, information technology or science at Swinburne in Semester 1, 2018

• provide evidence of financial need and/or educational disadvantage. Disadvantage may include:– financial difficulty or low income– disability or medical condition– delay or interruption to career or studies because of family

responsibilities or illness– relocation from a rural or regional area in order to undertake

tertiary study– English as a second language– identification as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander

• provide a Personal Statement of no more than 500 words demonstrating educational disadvantage, sound academic ability and a strong potential to complete the degree within minimum time

• provide ATAR or previous academic records

Goldsmith Family Women in STEM ScholarshipThe Goldsmith Family’s Women in STEM Scholarship was established to encourage women to undertake a career across Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical disciplines.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $7,500 per year for the normal duration of the course, for a maximum period of up to five years.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian Citizen, New Zealand citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or holder of an Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa

• be a female commencing student studying full-time at Swinburne or through Swinburne Online in an undergraduate degree in the year the scholarship is awarded

• have achieved a minimum ATAR of 90.00 (provide ATAR certificate)

• provide two referee reports (written in the last two years by persons not related to you) to support your application:– Academic reference – from a person competent to comment on

your capacity to undertake or continue tertiary studies, and– Character reference – from a person competent to comment on

your suitability for the scholarship. eg. an employer.

• submit a personal statement of no more than 750 words outlining:– your leadership qualities– recent community involvement/voluntary work (within the last two

years)– your long term goals/career aspirations– the benefit of this scholarship to your studies

Students must be enrolled in a Swinburne course in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to be considered for this scholarship.

OneSteel ScholarshipOneSteel is Australia’s premier manufacturer of long steel products and is a leading metals distribution company in Australia and New Zealand. The OneSteel Scholarship Program was established in 2016 to support Process/Metallurgy oriented students undertaking science or engineering related studies, and electrical and mechanical engineers.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $3000 per year for the standard duration of the course, for a maximum period of up to three years.

Eligibility/selection criteriaApplicants must:

• be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or holders of an Australian permanent Humanitarian visa

• be enrolled full-time in their second year of study in either a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science with Majors encompassing:– Materials or Process/Metallurgy – Mechanical– Electrical

Violet Louise Bonner Postgraduate Scholarship for WomenThis scholarship was established by Swinburne alumna Kate Brown in memory of her late mother Violet Louise Bonner, this Scholarship aims to support female postgraduate students to complete their studies in the sciences, particularly where their research aims to translate into innovative products or processes to assist the community.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $3000 for one year.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be a female Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen, an Australian Permanent Resident or a holder of an Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa

• have commenced a full-time science, engineering or technology postgraduate degree on any campus in in the year the scholarship is awarded

• provide undergraduate results, postgraduate results, and/or academic referee report(s)

• provide evidence of financial hardship and/or personal hardship (documents such as a bank statement, salary slip, Centrelink statement, and/or personal statement)

Achievement Cleaning Humanitarian Welcome ScholarshipsAchievement Cleaning is committed to helping humanitarian visa holders in Australia. The university currently has a significant student population of students who identify as being enrolled under a humanitarian visa. This humanitarian welcome scholarship is designed to support commencing students holding a humanitarian visa in a Diploma or Advanced Diploma Course.

Value$3000 paid in two instalments.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be commencing a Diploma or Advanced Diploma study at Swinburne in in the year the scholarship is awarded

• submit a personal statement (300 words) addressing any social/economic disadvantage, involvement in the community (including leadership potential) and how you intend to contribute to your community in the future

• submit evidence of:– financial hardship– Permanent Humanitarian Visa status, and– extra-curricular service to community.

George Alexander Foundation ScholarshipsThese scholarships have been made available by The George Alexander Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1972 by George Alexander AM to provide grants for public charitable purposes in Australia. Reflecting the founder’s special interests, the scholarships offer talented students access and opportunity to fulfil their potential. The scholarships are an important investment in the future of individual young Australians and their ongoing contribution to the broader community.

Students offered a George Alexander Foundation Scholarship may undertake any on-campus undergraduate degree at Swinburne.

ValueFive scholarships are available. Each scholarship is valued at $7500 per year, for a period of three years. The total value of the scholarship is $22,500.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian citizen or a Australian permanent resident.

• be a commencing student studying full-time in an on-campus undergraduate degree at Swinburne in Semester 1, 2018.

• have completed Year 12 in 2017 (or 2016, and taken a gap year in 2017)

• have achieved a minimum ATAR of 80.00

• demonstrate need to reside away from home in order to undertake study

• provide a Curriculum Vitae (maximum two pages)

• provide a personal statement (750–1000 words) addressing the following criteria:– Your academic standing– The measure of leadership and leadership potential demonstrated

in your academic and personal life– The level and quality of community participation undertaken

by you (including volunteering, work history, sporting and other community activities undertaken in/outside of school)

– The reasons for selecting the particular program of study in which you are enrolled and your long term goals as a result of this study

– The degree to which the scholarship would enable you to best meet your educational and employment goals (what would it mean for you to receive a GAF scholarship?)

• provide a three-year plan outlining how you will develop your skills and work over the duration of their scholarship funding. Three-year plan template can be downloaded from Swinburne Scholarship website

• provide two referee reports (written in the last two years) to support your application (please include the title/position of your referees. They must also be from different organisations)– Academic reference – from a person qualified to comment on

your academic studies, preferably a subject coordinator from your secondary school and/or your school principal.

– Character reference – from a person competent to supply a character reference (for example, a person with whom you have undertaken volunteer work or community activities or a current or past employer) outlining your suitability for the scholarship. This statement cannot be written by someone related to you.

Goldsmith Family Indigenous Education Support ScholarshipThe Swinburne Indigenous Education Support Scholarship has been established to encourage Indigenous students to undertake any undergraduate studies at Swinburne.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $7500 per year for the normal duration of the course, for a maximum period of up to five years.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian Citizen and recognised as an Indigenous Australian

• be a commencing student studying full-time at Swinburne in an undergraduate degree in the year the scholarship is awarded.

• have achieved a minimum ATAR of 60.00, or equivalent

• provide a written statement of 500 words outlining career aspirations

• for Film and Television courses, the following alternative entry requirements apply:– portfolio of creative work– academic transcript of previous studies

Kath Watson Scholarship for WomenThe Kath Watson Foundation was established to support female students from disadvantaged backgrounds to undertake and/or continue tertiary education and to achieve their full academic potential by reducing the need to work outside of study.

Students offered a Kath Watson Scholarship may undertake one of the following courses:

• a full-time vocation education course: Certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma

• a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

ValueThe scholarship is valued at $2000 per year for the normal duration of the degree up to a maximum period of five years.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa

• be a female over 25 years of age or older by 1 January in the year the Scholarship commences.

• commencing or current student studying full-time in a course at Certificate IV level and above at Swinburne in Semester 1 in the year the scholarship is awarded.

• demonstrate and provide evidence of financial need and educational disadvantage. Disadvantage may include:– financial difficulty or low income– disability or medical condition– delay or interruption to career or studies because of family

responsibilities or illness– relocation from a rural or regional area in order to undertake

Swinburne Welcome ScholarshipsSwinburne Welcome Scholarships provide opportunities for holders of Bridging Visa ‘E’ (BVE’s) (subclass V050) and Temporary Protection Visas (TPV) (subclass V785) to access undergraduate, Certificate, Foundation/Unilink and Diploma/Advanced Diploma courses at Swinburne.

Residential Scholarships

Residential Scholarships are available to current students who are living on campus. There are a total of 20 scholarships available, designed to assist students in meeting the costs of living away from home.

ValueScholarship recipients receive a reduction of $1000 per semester in their residential fees. Total value of the scholarship is $2000 for a full academic year.

Eligibility/selection criteriaTo be eligible, applicants must:

• be enrolled full-time at Swinburne

• reside in the Student Residences at the Hawthorn campus for the full academic year i.e. two semesters

Scanlon Swinburne Intercultural FellowshipThe Scanlon Swinburne Intercultural Fellowship is intended to build leadership in intercultural relations with a particular emphasis on the Australian context. The Scanlon Foundation is keen to support new and emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds who can make a contribution to Australian society. To achieve this, a fellowship participant would have a range of briefings and meetings with relevant people and organisations in Australia to provide context and assist with the development of a research focus. In pairs, the selected fellows will travel to two countries to participate in similar briefings and meetings focused on their question.

Study and Living Expenses Grants

A variety of grants and scholarships are available to local undergraduate degree or associate degree students from low socio-economic backgrounds who are experiencing significant hardship and struggling to meet basic living costs. These grants and scholarships have been made possible through funding provided by the Commonwealth Department of Education – Higher Education Participation and Partnership Program (HEPPP).

Due to Commonwealth funding requirements pathways and vocational education, postgraduate and international students are ineligible to apply for these benefits.

Major Grants/Scholarships

Eligibility/selection criteria for all grants/scholarships To be eligible, applicants must be:

• an Australian Citizen, an Australian permanent resident or permanent humanitarian visa holder

• domestic undergraduate (or associate degree) student

• enrolled full time at Swinburne*

• from a low socio-economic background (e.g. you or your parents are in receipt of or eligible for a Centrelink benefit)

• experiencing significant financial hardship and struggling to meet basic living costs.

* Exceptional circumstances for studying part time will be considered. Students who have deferred for the current academic year are ineligible to apply.

Rental Assistance ScholarshipsThis scholarship is available to students who are paying rent or board, including students living in family home paying board and contributing to household expenses.

ValueScholarships are valued up to $2000.

Laptop Grants – MacbookThis grant is available to students who are enrolled in a course where use of Mac computer is a core requirement. This includes courses related to design, film, television, digital media including multimedia and games.

ValueRecipients will receive a MacBook Pro 15" or 13" Notebook with nylon sleeves up to the value of $2800.

Students can only select one type of laptop on offer.

Laptop Grants – Lenovo ThinkPad 13.3 (or equivalent)This grant is available to students who are in need of a laptop to assist with their studies.

iPad GrantsThis grant is available to students who are in need of an iPad to assist with their studies.
