“A goal properly set is halfway reached”. Therefore, if you can DREAM IT… YOU CAN DO IT!

Never lose sight of the fact that this whole thing was started by a MOUSE (Walt Disney)

2010 is drawing to a close, and indeed it has been a bumper year for Swingtime Golf, Market Info Direct and all those who have participated to make this an astounding success. Not only have we achieved the goals that were planned and set for 2010, but we exceeded our expectations beyond comprehension.

Thank you to all our sponsors, golfers, investors, Golf Director Steeven Shearer and all his staff and shareholders of Golf du Château Golf Estate, for opening up your facilities to the Swingtime Adopt-a-Golfer Program, the Mauritius Golf Federation for affording us the privilege for accommodating a meeting with the Swingtime team, to discuss forthcoming events and an opportunity to share in our reciprocated goals for 2011. To the team at Market Info Direct and Swingtime Golf a very special thank you for all your tireless efforts and loyalty. Last but not least, I thank my wife Michelle and my son Levi, for all the sacrifi ce that you have afforded me and belief in my vision. Without you, this could not have been done.

Our last publication featured our 2nd Anniversary that highlighted all the events hosted from the inception of the publication to October 2010 and featured all the events that Swingtime has achieved in Mauritius and abroad. This initiative has given rise to me thinking about the success of Walt Disney’s empire.

The seed for most people’s dreams naturally springs from their everyday experience. If you have not yet identifi ed your dream, just keep your eyes and ears open, listen to your heart and be open to every possibility. Therefore, let us together join hands in our plight to make Mauritius become one of the leading golfi ng destinations in the world and truly embark on a journey to ensure that our Mauritian golfers make their debut in the forthcoming 2016 Olympics.

D eepak Chopra, in his book “Golf for Enlightenment”, intimates rather succinctly that: “Now is the only time

that really exists in golf. The swing is always in the present, and when you walk up the fairway to address the ball again, the present moment is once more at hand. Enlightenment is nothing more than mastering that mysterious place called now, where intention and attention come together.”

Seemingly, rather unexpected, that time of the year has rolled on where we all take stock of what has transpired. We pause for the briefest of moments to refl ect and hastily make plans for the future. Next year is just around the corner after all. It was the above passage and a conversation with Olympic Ski Champion and lady golfer Maria Walliser (pg 44) about being fully in the “now” that had me asking how committed we are to “being present” in our lives. I know that golf, by its inherent nature, is compelling in that one is constantly striving to improve, to perfect. It certainly exudes a very unique driving force over one’s life soon after we pick up a club. Believe me I know, and I’m very much a novice. But further refl ection on “fully being in the now” had me sitting up aware of how golf pulls one so closely into the present. It generates a focus that is concentrated and heightened and we soak up the moment in all its glory. This does of course beg the question: are we soaking up the other moments in our lives in their full glory?

Life, like golf, is not a rehearsal. In the “now” is the only time you have control and the space to act. Yesterday, it’s too late; tomorrow is well tomorrow, it’s not here yet. But here in “the now”

I can be better, kinder, humbler, more forgiving, open to change, more generous, patient and all those many attributes, characteristics and ethics golf extols. I know that the next time I’m on a driving range trying to improve my swing, I’ll be a little bit more in the “moment”, grateful for my health and fresh air, and if I master that mysterious place called now, where intention and attention come together, and hit a great shot, I will defi nitely enjoy it a little longer before rushing off to try it again.

2010 has been a phenomenal year for Swingtime: The Business of Golf. It is with humbleness and appreciation that I thank all the unique and diverse individuals comprising of CEO’s, entrepreneurs, entertainers, sportsmen and women and of course golfers, who have featured during the past year, to an amazing team, who continuously pull rabbits out of hats, and to our publisher, whose imagination knows no bounds.

To our wonderful readers and their families, have a blessed and safe holiday season. Thank you for your support! 2011 is lining up to be even more exciting. You will not want to miss out on a deluge of surprises coming your way.

Have a great round!

Rob Greeff

O n the eve of the 1st Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Pro Am, Swingtime the Business of Golf celebrated its 2nd Year

Anniversary with an intimate dinner hosted by the CEO and President of Swingtime Mr. Alan Duval. Special international guests: Mrs. Ruth Linder (Switzerland), Mr and Mrs Roderick and Christa Wolf (U.K), Mr and Mrs Fritz and Dorli Wittwer (Switzerland) and Mr and Mrs Gerard and Veronica Blazer (Switzerland) joined the staff of Market Info Direct and Swingtime, together with Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfers in celebrating two years of achievement.

A welcoming and introductory speech by Media Manager and Editor Rob Greeff praised the grand vision and commitment of Mr. Alan Duval who, under his direction has seen Swingtime not only contribute to the Golf industry in Mauritius but also innovate the sport by bringing to Mauritius a true understanding of the “Business of Golf”. This has taken the

form of the 1st Business and Golf magazine produced and published in Mauritius and distributed to 17 countries worldwide and the 1st Golf Talk Show produced and broadcasted in Mauritius, as well as the success of the 1st and 2nd Swingtime Corporate Golf Challenge, bringing international corporate golf to Mauritius. Special mention of the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Program was also made with its ambition of developing and producing Mauritian Golf Champions. The entirety of the many accomplishments is largely due to the leadership and tenacity of the Swingtime CEO. The new

Swingtime publication, Swingtime Golf Travel, was also presented to the international guests to great enthusiasm and applause.

Swingtime CEO Mr. Duval, in a rousing and heartfelt speech, individually thanked all his staff for their commitment to the various Swingtime Projects and paid appreciation

to each staff member’s individual talents that contributed to

Swingtime’s success and accomplishments. He also welcomed into being the 1st Golf Travel Magazine, which too would be distributed to 17 countries.

An MBC news team and the Swingtime Golf Show were also in attendance to cover and capture the event. A celebratory mood ensued which duly set the tone for the 1st Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer ProAm, of which the international guests would also be participating in.

Press Press ConferenceConferenceM arket Info Direct Mtius (M.I.D) Ltd. invited members of the Media and Press to a press conference to

announce and invite all avid golfers to the 1st Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Pro-Am Challenge Trophy 2010. The event, under the Corporate Social Responsibility (SSR) of M.I.D is directed by Swingtime Golf Mauritius.

Present were Rob Greeff (M.I.D Media Manager and Editor of Swingtime Business of Golf), Dhinesh Rai Kallee (M.I.D GM), Billy Narraina (Swingtime Director of Golf) and Steeven Shearer (Director of Golf: Golf du Château).

The fi rst Mauritian Business and Golf Magazine: Swingtime the Business of Golf, launched in 2008 and distributed to 17 countries, under the aegis of Market Info Direct (M.I.D) has continued to support Mauritian Golfers via events on each layer of social and business endeavours. In marking the 2nd Year Anniversary of Swingtime, events and initiatives designed and set in motion by Swingtime during the past two years, stand as a testimony to a track list of accomplishments that have transcended a fair share of trials and challenges. These include hosting the 1st and 2nd Swingtime Corporate Golf Challenge (2009 & 2010) presenting Mauritius with an innovative business platform via the conduit of corporate golf, bringing together local and international

business leaders; The Swingtime Mauritius Open (2009) held at the historical Gymkhana Golf Club (4th oldest in the world); Initiating the Swingtime Golf Talk Show and Golf Tips show (a fi rst for Mauritius television), taking CSR and democratising golf hand in hand by raising funds during the Corporate Golf Challenge 2010 for the S.O.S Childrens Villages Mauritius, creating a golf day for children at the Beau Bassin Municipality family day to presenting the sport of golf for the very fi rst time at the ‘’La Semaine des étudiants’’ (Sports Week) at the University of Mauritius to over 300 students.

The Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Program launched in 2009 comes into focus with a tribute to their training with the 1st Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Pro-Am. The success of the program is noted with the Adopt-A-golfers winning the 1st Bern Golf Trophy presented by the Swiss Invest Group in Bern Switzerland in June this year.

A groundbreaking record of 23 sponsors who have come on board in their support of the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Pro-Am were also presented to the media. Much thanks and appreciation were given for their invaluable and generous support and recognition of the endeavour of democratising golf and developing professional careers in the sport.

Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfers Ridwan Purdassy, Jayesh Choony, Vicky Panoo, Mourad Bundhoo and John Bougas teed off at 7.40 am. This was the 2nd day of competition for the Adopt-A-Golfers who were playing a stroke play format. Teams made up of golf pros and amateurs, who played a Stableford format for 18-holes teed off after. In what can only be described as optimum golf weather – the sun peeking out through a mildly over cast sky, temperate 26 degrees Celsius and the lightest of breezes (just enough to accommodate international visitors to tropical climes) –, set the tone for a spirited and enjoyable day of golf on immaculately manicured greens.

The Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer ProAm 2010 has been anchored in the success of encompassing the all embracing aspect of golf as seen in the appeal

of having players from both genders, all ages, pros

and amateurs alike, as well as those representing local and international business across various sectors.

MBC Sports News together with the Swingtime Golf Show were also in attendance to capture the event for broadcast on Mauritian Television.

T he Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Program - launched in 2009 as an initiative to train, develop and fast track a career

in professional golf for disadvantaged youth in Mauritius – saw the 1st Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer ProAm 2010 as the pinnacle in the fi rst year of the program. Instrumental in the training and development of the young golfers, Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Coach: Mauritius Professional Golf Champion (2009) Billy Narraina joined us as we looked back on the 1st year of the program and shared with us the way forward for 2011.

RG: What has this fi rst year been like for the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Program?BN: This has truly been a groundbreaking year for the democratization of golf in Mauritius. The door to the world of golf seriously opened for young talented disadvantaged Mauritian golfers. Swingtime created many opportunities for access to golf events, the 1st being the Swingtime Mauritian Golf Open 2009. The Adopt-A-Golfers were then sent to India to observe the PGTI and receive training by top international coaches on some of the most historical and prestigious golf courses. The training program kicked off in 2010 with Golf Du Château in Bel Ombre welcoming the Adopt-A-Golfers as their offi cial training ground on the 18-hole championship course, where they prepared for the 2nd Swingtime Corporate Golf Challenge and where two deserving Adopt-A-Golfers were presented with sets of professional golf clubs. The Adopt-A-Golfers then journeyed to Switzerland where they participated in the 1st Bern Golf Trophy by Swiss Invest Group, where they were

very successful with Mourad Bundhoo taking top honours by winning the event. The Adopt-a-Golfers then applied themselves to their training in preparation of showcasing their talent at the 1st Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer ProAm held at Golf Du Chateau with John Bougas, a new Swingtime Adopt-a-Golfer winning in the Adopt-A-Golfer category.

Of course in-between all of theses golf tournaments and events, and their participation

Golf Tips Show, much training and development took place.

RG: Could you give us an indicator of their development?BN: Yes, certainly. You must remember that none of these boys in Mauritius received coaching before, so I am very pleased with the work that they have done. Mourad Bundhoo started the program with a 14 handicap and is now playing at 9, Ridwan Purdassy began at 9 and is playing at 7 and Jayesh Choony and Vicky Panoo started at 12 and are playing at 9. This of course has only laid the foundation of what we are setting out to achieve next year.

RG: What can we expect to see in the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer training Program in 2011?BN: The Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Program in 2011 moves into an intensive direction. The core of the training is strategized in the development of an experienced player from amateur to a tour player. There is of course much to be done and we will be working very hard.

As part of focusing on consistency, the Adopt-A-golfers are under constant evaluation. We kick off the year with a full revision of the actual level of play and this will include all areas of the game, namely: long game, which includes driving, fairway woods, long irons, rescue woods, ball fl ight, the ability to play different types of shots including draw, fade, hook, slice, low and high

shots as well as their short game which includes pitching, bunker shots, chipping and putting. We take this further with them understanding the game with different formats of play like stroke play and match play and their various applicable tactics and strategies. This will also be leveraged against their ability to cope with various climatic conditions.

The training sessions are envisaged to be four times weekly of at least fi ve to six hours of training on the range for a period of six to eight weeks, including playing on different courses once a week. We are aiming to improve a minimum of 1.5 strokes every 10 weeks.

The training program also includes a mental component with a focus on attitude on and off the course and a physical training component to build stamina and strength together with working on course strategy. We are also looking at exchanges with various golf academies and positioning the boys in games with players of better levels. As you can see, we will certainly be putting the boys through their paces.

Swingtime the Business of Golf Magazine will be tracking the training and development of the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfers. For any enquiries regarding the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Program contact MarketInfoDirect at +230 213 3399 or email [email protected]

E urope’s dramatic 14½-13½ victory over the United States will be hailed as one of the most passionate and exciting Ryder Cups in history. The 211 yard, Par 3, hole 17 set the stage for a closely contested triumph filled with tension, held breaths and a demonstration of

unprecedented passion that only golf can display. Details of the match interspersed with live commentary so aptly captured this monumental moment in golf history. Mahan needs to win the final two holes to retain the trophy. McDowell only requires a half and Europe have won. Nobody could have written this script here today. McDowell will tee off first here, looking to find the green. McDowell flirts with the bunker, but just clings on. He has rested up just in the first cut on the right. Mahan lets fly but miss hits and lands well short of the green. They march up to the green amid wild cheers from 35,000 fans. Mahan to play first, and realistically he needs to chip in. Nerves get to Mahan and he fluffs his chip. McDowell has two putts to win the Ryder Cup for Europe. The tension here is unbearable. McDowell plays it up the hill, and has a 4ft putt left. However, if Mahan misses, it's all over. Mahan, from left to right, sends it on its way. He misses right, and conceded the putt to McDowell. McDowell wins the match for Europe!

Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, who played the pivotal role in clinching victory for the European Team, was quick to acknowledge the foundation laid out by his 11 team members. “I have 11 team-mates beside me here who gave me the opportunity to do what I did this afternoon,” he said. Realizing that the fate of the Ryder Cup rested on his shoulders as the two teams stood neck and neck at 13½ points each certainly had his nerves boiling away. “I can safely say I’ve never felt nerves like that,” said the 31 year old. “I was asked to compare how that felt to when I won the US Open and this was a different level completely. We said we wouldn’t look at leader boards but those are pretty big screens and it’s tough not to notice. I saw one on the tenth green and realized it was tight. Coming down the stretch I’ve never felt nerves like it. I’d hoped it wouldn’t come down to my match and the guys before me would do the job but it wasn’t the case. The 16th was the greatest second shot and greatest putt of my career.”

Captain Colin Montgomerie was emphatic in describing the triumph as the greatest moment of his career. “There's a different responsibility being captain than there is playing,” he said. “Playing is a whole different responsibility and a whole different feel. I have a reasonable playing record in this competition, but I never had a winning record as a captain.

A rousing closing ceremony was replete with emotion and appreciation for all parties concerned. The chairman and owner of the Celtic Manor Resort, Sir Terry Matthews was thanked by the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM, the First Minister of Wales, who also made special mention of the efforts of Jim McKenzie and his 110-man green keeping staff, who cleared 15 days worth of rain from the course.

Phil Weaver, board member and representative of Ryder Cup Europe, presented a silver engraved putter to Jim Remy, the President of the PGA of America, representing the handover of the Ryder Cup from the Celtic Manor Resort to Medinah Country Club near Chicago, who will play host for 2012.

Corey Pavin, Team Captain for the United States, was overwhelmed by emotions when thanking and heaping praise upon his team for their “heart, resolve, sportsmanship and fine play” and that, regardless of the narrow defeat, he was incredibly proud to captain the side.

European Captain Collin Montgomerie took to the stage to an ear deafening applause and described Pavin as a “credit to golf” and his team “a credit to their Captain”. He lauded his vice captains as “the best backroom team in sport”. To his 12-men team he was rapturous, describing them as “12 very special guys”. “I asked them all to play with heart and passion, and by God they did.”

Samuel Ryder, born in 1858, only took up the sport of golf as an amateur after his 50th birthday. The Ryder Cup today is largely thanks to his enthusiasm. After establishing the very lucrative Heath and Heather Seed Company in St. Albans in Hertfordshire, Ryder was elected mayor of St. Albans in 1906. Upon experiencing a spell of illness due to overwork, he was encouraged to take up golf as a form light exercise and getting fresh air, although initially he was not very keen on the idea.

A professional from the local 9-hole course took him through the basics and this was furthered by Mitchell as his exclusive instructor. An unofficial international match between the British and Americans in 1926 saw Ryder posing the question:”Why can’t they all get to know each other?” This was followed by with “I will give £5 to each of the winning players and give a party afterwards with champagne and chicken sandwiches.” The fact that the tournament was unofficial soon had Ryder donating a solid gold cup worth £250, with Ryder insisting that a golfing figure adorning the lid resemble Mitchell. The first official Ryder Cup then took place in June 1927. Samuel Ryder lived to see 2 Ryder Cups tournaments on home ground. He died January 2nd 1936.

The introduction of the players from continental Europe in 1979 created a new dynamic with the onslaught of U.S domination beginning to change.

T he landscape of amateur golf is a diverse terrain inhabited by as diverse golfers. Amateur golf sparkles with luminaries

from other professional sports as well. Swingtime: The Business of Golf met up with one such high achiever: Franco Cavegn, Swiss ski champion and amateur golfer. At the foot of the snow-capped mountains surrounding Bad Ragaz in Switzerland (famous for its thermal spa and wellness centre, century-old golf course, skiing adventures and legendary home of Heidi from the Alps), Swingtime spoke to this very busy entrepreneur.

RG: In a career full of achievement, where did it all begin?FC: I was born in 1971 and grew up in Cave Vella, in Grisons country. I liked being active as a kid, and skiing suited me down to a tee. I was very blessed to pursue a professional career in something that I grew up with and also having the opportunity to fully explore the potential I had as a youngster for this sport.

RG: What are the highlights that come to mind, when you refl ect on your career?FC: There are so many of them. I have had a 16-year career as a ski racer. That was certainly a long time to have met many amazing people, from friends to other competitors, and also to travel to many beautiful destinations. My sport requires the world to be very different form the norm, so I have been very lucky

to see some of the most dramatic landscapes mantled in snow. It’s really something special. Of course I would have to mention that there were extraordinary moments that I will treasure, like three appearances in the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Nagano and Salt Lake City, seven appearances at the Alpine World Ski Championships, being 4th placed in the overall downhill World Cup 2002, two downhill podiums at Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Kvitfjell and 35 placements in the top 10 World Cup.

RG: Have the lofty highs of a sporting career, together with the many opportunities for learning, translated into what you are doing now?FC: Indeed they have. I can say that during my career every moment had something valuable to teach. I have certainly benefi ted from a distillation of an array of technical information that has added a depth to my knowledge, coupled with a distinctive interactive experience. I am well versed in the fi eld of drive technology and appropriate ski construction. The

environment of the national and international ski circuit, dealing with the media, cultivating the support of sponsors and meeting many interesting people from all around the world, has provided the best educational learning ground to expand my horizons. All of these threads have come together and been incorporated into Franco Cavegn Events.

RG: Tell us about Franco Cavegn Events.FC: ‘Franco Cavegn Events’ presents and creates exclusive ski events of the highest level, which are endowed with fun, enjoyment and excitement at all times. The ski events are limited to small groups, so as to maximise a superb skiing experience with participants benefi ting from my skills and tricks and insider know-how. Selected ski destinations in Switzerland, the USA, Canada and only other suitable places around the world that ensure a premier skiing environment and adventure are chosen. We cover all needs in the areas of carving, powder skiing and helicopter skiing and endeavour to create an all round quality escapade.

RG: What skiing events have you lined up for next year?FC: There are quite a few. The Skeena Heliskiing adventure takes us back to Canada in the exclusive Bear Claw Lodge in British Columbia. Then of course we

also have various packages in

Switzerland during the winter which includes six days of Heliskiing at 30,500 metres. An average package includes line of fl ight in economy class, accommodation full-board in double room, all transfers with Zai skis available. During January 2011, myself and Silvano Beltrametti host two educational and fun days in the snow at Ski Resort Lenzerzeide. These are just a few, but there are many more.

RG: You have also entered the domain of golf. How did that come about?FC: About 10 years ago I was invited to Golf Club Bad Alvaneu together with two other skiers to do a promotion and that was where my passion for golf grew. When I was competing I never had the time to play much. But now that I do, I very much enjoy it.

RG: The transition from skiing to golf must be an interesting one. Is there a dramatic paradigm shift between the two sports disciplines?FC: The one fundamental difference is that when you play golf, on average it can take four and a half hours. When you’re skiing it can be over in two and a half minutes. Both, however, are tactical and strategic sporting activities that require a resilient and disciplined mindset.

RG: You have played golf around the world. What courses have you enjoyed?FC: I have been lucky to play in the United

States, Antigua and South Africa. The thing about golf

Page 39: Swingtime Mauritius 13th issue

37Profi le Franco Cavegn Swingtime issue 13www.swingtimegolf.co.zain association with TIMESONLINE of London

courses is that they are so very different and each one of them brings something individual to the experience. I have to say that playing in the Bahamas was a very enjoyable experience and one of my favourites. I am looking forward to visiting Mauritius and playing in one of the Swingtime Golf events too.

RG: Your events company also encompasses an association with golf as well, doesn’t it?FC: Yes, that is correct. Through an association with Scout 24 Birdie Open, Golf Club Bad Alvaneu and Golf Club Bad Ragaz, golf can be enjoyed to its full extent just as much as skiing is in top quality tournaments, golf tours and golf courses.

RG: As a successful athlete and entrepreneur, what advice can you pass on to youngsters who are embarking on sporting careers, whether in skiing or golf?FC: I would say training is vital. This is where one puts in the time and effort to perfect one’s natural ability and bring that extra

something special on the day of competition. I would also

advise them to focus on successfully

completing one step at a time as they move forward through their training and build on experience and learning opportunities. As a professional athlete, it is also important to pay attention to the business of the sport that you are in. A sporting career can provide many lessons that can be turned into a fi nancially rewarding business after one retires.

Viele Profi s anderer

Page 41: Swingtime Mauritius 13th issue

to meet with our clients outside of the bank environment and in doing so we maintain a close relationship.

RG: The world of banking and, for that matter, golf has traditionally been the domain of men. What are your views of women in the banking sector and golf?DW: That is true, although I am happy to see more women take their place as well as active roles in the banking sector. It definitely adds another perspective. With regards to golf, I try to encourage women to take up the sport, especially amongst my clients. Golf as a sport is certainly beneficial to all genders. Aside from the very obvious health benefits of promoting physical activity in the outdoors, the mental side of the game is very engaging.

RG: What is your golf tip for beginners?DW: There are many tips and strategies one can apply, but I would say the most important thing is to forget about work, free your mind and above all have fun. The other aspects of technique is an ongoing process which I, to this day, also greatly enjoy learning and perfecting.

RG: What has been your experience of golf here in Mauritius?DW: My trip to Mauritius has been wonderful. This is indeed a paradise. The people of Mauritius are very special and hospitable. The hotel I stayed in was lovely and waking up to the most beautiful view of the Indian Ocean is something that I will cherish when I return home, especially the marvellous cuisine. Playing golf in Mauritius was fantastic. I had the opportunity to play at Golf Du Chateau and Tamarina. I enjoyed the spectacular scenery and the various challenges they presented.

I was also very happy to participate in the 1st Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Pro Am. It was a very well organised tournament, which ran very smoothly. The weather was lovely and Swingtime can be very proud of staging such an event. I also had the opportunity to meet the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfers. They are all very nice young men and their commitment and dedication to the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer program is admirable. This program is a fantastic opportunity for them and I hope that they will all do well. I look forward to seeing them achieve and improve in the coming year. I also look very much forward to visiting Mauritius and Swingtime again.

M aria Walliser is a former Swiss alpine skiing champion. Together with fellow Swiss Erika Hess, Michela Figini and

Vreni Schneider, she dominated the female alpine skiing category during the 1980’s. Among her many successes, she won two overall World Cups (1986 and 1987), with a total of 25 individual victories. Crowning an impressive list of achievements, Maria also won three World titles in 1987 and 1989 and three Olympic medals at Calgary (1988) and Albertville (1992). Since retiring from the competitive skiing circuit, Maria has embraced the world of amateur golf, with a particular interest in participating in charity golf events. Swingtime the Business of Golf met with this phenomenal sporting personality and lady golfer on the historical Bad Ragaz Golf Course, and spoke about her career, life and golf.

RG: How does the amazing story of yours begin?MS: As you know Switzerland is a winter sport country, so it is normal that children start skiing with their families at about three or four years old. In our village, my parents were the owners of a small ski lift and so I discovered the thrill of going faster and faster at an early age. I was ten when I had my fi rst race, and that truly set the moment for me embracing the exhilaration of fl ying down a snowy mountain. Of course skiing is not only about speed. It involves a lot of technical and physical training. When you embark on a professional skiing career all of these aspects have to come together, especially with the mental training part and being strong in the mind.

RG: When did you turn professional?MW: I was 17 years old. I had a great race. I was 2nd behind Hanni Wenzel who was a brilliant Olympic winner and followed by Erika Hess, another talented skier and team mate. The media and coaches had their eye on me and from that moment I was not only in the European Cup but I went on to participate in the World Cup as well.

RG: Of the many competitions you have participated in, what has been the most memorable?MW: Winning a silver medal in the Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984 and winning two bronze medals in the Olympics in Calgary 1988 were very memorable and of course my gold medals in the World cups were very special.

RG: What goes into the training for the Olympics?MW: I was part of the Swiss national team, and we prepared over the year. Of course one cannot ski the whole year, so we did lots of biking and hiking and other sports that kept us strong. It is also during this time that one works on the mental discipline that is required. All of these training regimes come together as you push your body to the limit and prepare for the Olympics.

RG: When did you start playing golf?MW: I started playing golf when I retired from ski racing. My husband actually started playing earlier and we wanted to play together. A wedding gift to ourselves was a membership at the golf club here at Bad Ragaz. Although I haven’t taken the time to signifi cantly work on my handicap, which is 18, it is suffi cient for me to enjoy the sport and participate in charity events.

RG: What do you enjoy most about the Bad Ragaz Golf Club?MW: It is an old course with a lot of history; in fact it’s over a century old. There are many beautiful big trees and the area is very green. I also enjoy the many churches on the golf course with their charming architecture. Of course we are also surrounded by the mountains. I always say I cannot live without mountains. To play golf and have one’s eyes embrace these magnifi cent mountains is very special to me.

RG: You mentioned earlier the mental discipline and strength one has to develop for professional ski racing. Has that same mental discipline been useful when playing golf?MW: Oh yes indeed, it has been very helpful. I apply the same amount of concentration on the greens, especially when I have to motivate myself to fi ght for the last shot or putt. The internal thought process of playing against the course is very challenging.

RG: What do you derive personally out of the game of golf?MW: For me golf is about relaxing. It’s a wonderful period that I can take for myself and be in my own thoughts and enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy playing later in the day when the course is less busy and I can soak up the beautiful surroundings, have my own challenge on the greens and explore my own rhythm of the physicality of the sport.

RG: Golf has also brought you into the domain of charity organizations. Tell us about the Charity Foundation that you work with?MW: Sure, I like being involved in charities. I am blessed to be able to contribute in my capacity in the raising of funds and or awareness to causes which can change people’s lives for the better. I have had the opportunity to play golf in charity events for the Folic Acid Foundation. Folic Acid is a vitamin which can be used to help treat Alzheimer’s disease, depression, anemia, and certain types of cancer and is very important during pregnancy. Last summer I undertook my own charity event, which was a lot of hard work, but it was a great success with wonderful golf, fantastic weather and a superb atmosphere. We were able to raise funds for children with Spina bifi da like my daughter. We organised a week long holiday where kids with Spina bifi da could come together and participate in a wealth of activities like playing in a band and various sports like basketball. It is important for the kids to move. Our fi rst holiday camp had the kids playing golf, and that was very exciting. It opened up the experience of a sport where movement is so intrinsic and the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

RG: Throughout your career has there been a particular philosophy that has inspired you?MW: Having read many books on philosophy and psychology, I am by no means a philosopher, but “being in the moment” has always resonated with me. And so, I have always tried to take the fullness of the moment with both hands, whether it’s come to the last seconds of a race, enjoying my family or even playing golf, to fully be in the moment has brought me much joy and clarity on the experience of my life thus far.

RG: What do you wish to bring to fulfi lment in your future? MW: I think to lead a little bit of a quieter life, to dispense with the busyness that the world today imposes on us all. I think there is a freedom in that. Having my family around me is the most important thing in my life and being near the mountains.

A Glimpse into MikadoSwingtime issue 13www.swingtimegolf.co.zain association with TIMESONLINE of London

M ikado was established in Mauritius in 1969 as a family-owned company. It has since evolved over the past 42

years in the luxury business with passion and professionalism always at the fore. At the heart of its philosophy and mission: bringing confi dence to customers and together with expertise and experience, offering quality and value for money, products that enhance the clients lifestyle, with an extensive range of fashionable gold, silver jewellery and branded watches. With this in mind, Mikado lives its mission by operating in 19 outlets around the island and is strategically placed in all main shopping centres with a specialized after-sales service for watches under the supervision of a qualifi ed watchmaker. Swingtime Business of Golf met with Mikado M.D Vic Chakowa to discover what makes this retail success story tick.

RG: Mikado’s success in the retail sector of Mauritius has its origins in humble beginnings. How did it all begin?VC: The foundation of Mikado began many years ago in the village of Vacoas. Our focus in those early days was the repairing of watches. We also undertook the after-sales service for an agent of Seiko and this prompted the need for a store to provide products to repeat customers as well as extend our services to the agent we served. Our fi rst store opened in 1969 in Sir William Newton Street in Port Louis. From the very beginning, this has been a family concern. All the brothers and sisters including my wife have contributed to Mikado’s success. The thing that I am most proud of is that with our growth we have 150 people who work with us. It is the staff who is also like family that continues to be the rock that Mikado is built upon. In fact, our fi rst sales lady has been with us for 42 years. This family concept is the connection that links us from our humble beginnings to the 19 stores in operation today.

RG: The name Mikado lends itself a very exotic fl air. How did the name selection come about?VC: The branding of the Mikado concept is very dear to me. In 1969 the theatre was staging a production called Mikado, I am also a collector and lover of shells; one of the shells that I admire is in the collection of the Emperor of Japan, it is called

the Mikado. Also, at that time in Mauritius many Japanese and fi shermen were visiting the island. These three elements came together to give birth to the name of our company. I am happy to say that 42 years later it still sounds contemporary and modern, and being contemporary and modern is very much important to us as we endeavour to bring the very best in fashion and trends to our customers.

RG: After four decades in a retail sector that moves with fashion, how does Mikado remain current?VC: We are always watching what the trends are internationally. Over the years our experience has contributed to understanding and anticipating the needs of our customers. The products and brands we carry are strategically selected to achieve this by not only keeping our fi nger on the pulse of fashion, foreseeing shifts in trends but also to maintain the perfect price for the Mauritian market. We thus present the following brands of Tissot, Certina, Louis Erard, Festina, Seiko, Rotary, Guess, Casio, Sector, Police,

Page 54: Swingtime Mauritius 13th issue

Fontenay, Elite, Timex, Certus and have recently brought on ICE-WATCH which is a very dynamic product.

RG: What motivated Mikado to bring in ICE-WATCH as part of your brand selection?VC: As I mentioned, we are always watching trends and have noted the impact that ICE-WATCH is having globally. It is a product that is international, intergenerational and intercultural. It has a defi nitive unisex appeal based on colours, design and is all at once sporty and fashionable. And so, all in all presents an innovative lifestyle product that offers an incredible choice selection and can be worn to suit mood and any activity, be it leisure, sports, professional and of course fashion.

ICE –WATCH to date is available in 86 countries, with 4000 selling points and has sold 2.5 million watches. Mikado in turn wanted to bring it to Mauritius.

RG: What goes into procuring a brand like ICE-WATCH?VC: Well, we fi rst undertook our own assessment and met with ICE -WATCH at the Watch Show in Basel, Switzerland, then we went to the second

show in Hong Kong. This was followed by the ICE-WATCH representatives visiting Mauritius to analyse the market and Mikado was then selected to be the agent here.

RG: You are also a keen golfer. When did you start playing?VC: I joined Gymkhana 25 years ago. Gymkhana of course is the oldest golf club in Mauritius. But at the time I was not interested in golf at all, preferring tennis, squash and running. When I turned 60 my daughters gave me a set of golf clubs as a birthday present. I think it was only a few months later that I began to play. Ever since that time I have been in love with golf. It has become very much a part of my lifestyle; I play at 5 am every day. I certainly don’t expect to win tournaments and the like, but play for the sheer joy of it. My brother Anand has been playing for many years and he is a good golfer. Looking back, I wish I had started playing much sooner.

RG: What appeals to you so much about golf?VC: Well, they call it the gentleman’s game, and so the rules, ethics and etiquette that golf presents bring out the gentleman or gentle lady in all of us. I can also say that philosophically golf is the true realisation of patience. You cannot rush

through it. It makes you think. It is of course also a wonderful way to stay fi t and enjoy nature, and here in Mauritius we are very blessed to have some beautiful golf courses.

RG: We recently saw Mikado’s involvement in the 1st Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer ProAm as a sponsor. What was the motivation in this participation?VC: As a golfer myself, we are very enthusiastic about supporting the democratisation of golf in Mauritius. I would like to see more young people playing golf, and especially those who are talented but cannot necessarily afford it. The Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer Program provides a platform for this and Mikado wanted to play its part in this endeavour.

RG: Golf as a platform for business is increasingly popular. Have you found this to be true?VC: Yes I have. I never talk business on the golf course though. That comes after the round. But it certainly is an excellent way to assess a potential business partner as it provides insight into who the person is. I also see the value of corporate golf events for networking and branding opportunities and would like to see more happen in Mauritius.

RG: As a successful entrepreneur, what advice would you offer the youth in creating their own success?VC: I believe that success is open to everybody who works hard, and like golf, one must consistently strive to do better and to improve.

RG: What may we expect to see from Mikado next year?VC: Well this has been a good year for Mikado. We just opened a new store in Ebène, our existing stores have been under renovation and relaunched and we

have brought on a new exciting brand. We shall follow through in this spirit in 2011 by opening up a further three stores and continue to bring our clients excellent service, fresh ideas, the latest trends, quality products and great prices.

Le StGeran Golf Course Refurbishment

Le St Geran56

Page 59: Swingtime Mauritius 13th issue

Swingtime the Business of Golf attended the opening of the refurbished Gary Player 9-hole Golf Course at the St. Geran. The

new enhanced golf course opening coincided with the 35th Hotel Anniversary Golf Challenge Trophy. Many guests who are long-time returning visitors to the hotel were very enthusiastic about the renovated course.

We spoke to Resident Golf Pro Vivian Armance who took us through the technicalities of the refurbished course and how the various changes and improvements would create a superior golf experience for guests.

When the St Geran Golf Course was laid out 30 years ago, the greens were built very flat with no movement or subtle slopes. Zoysia grass was the preferred green in tropical regions. The grass was slow growing, salt tolerant and disease resistant.

Unfortunately, the ball roll was very slow and the grass produced a soft spongy surface which also scalped very badly when cut short and had an ensuing slow recovery.

Modern developments and demands have resulted in superior grass species and more adventurous greens design.

St Geran is keeping abreast of these developments to offer their discerning guests an enhanced golfing experience.

Over a period of four months the greens were remodelled and planted to the specialised greens grass known as Tifdwarf. This will offer more hold, faster speeds, truer roll, subtle slope and a greater variety of pin positions.

The greens’ approaches have been reworked to remove punitive bumps and rolls. The grass cover on the sandy tees has also been improved to create consistency throughout the course. The objective has been achieved to create a player friendly course of the highest resort standards which can be enjoyed by the St Geran clientele in little over an hour of pure golfing pleasure and St Geran looks forward to guests experiencing superb rounds of golf.

Bank Negara Malaysia and Bank of Mauritius sign memorandum of understanding.

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Bank of Mauritius (BOM) to establish

a collaborative framework aimed at enhancing mutual co-operation on capacity building and human capital development in the financial services industry, including the Islamic financial services sector.

The document signed on the 7th October 2010 will pave the way for both countries to strengthen co-operation in the development of talent, expertise, business linkages and infrastructure support in Islamic finance. This comes with recognition of the growth potential of Islamic finance and Malaysia’s leading role as the centre for Islamic Finance. The Memorandum of understanding was signed by BNM Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz and Governor of BOM Rundheersing Bheenick during the International Monetary Fund/World bank Annual Meetings 2010 in Washington D.C. New Multi Asset Exchange opens in MauritiusA new multi-asset exchange, the Global Board of Trade Ltd (GBOT), began trading operations in Mauritius on the 18th October 2010. GBOT is owned by Financial Technologies, an Indian company which operates exchanges. GBOT is an international multi-asset exchange based in Mauritius and offers an electronic exchange platform with efficient clearing and settlement systems to ensure counterparty guarantee for all trades. Commodity and currency derivative products, including precious and base metals, energy, “soft” agricultural commodities are traded, as well as currency derivatives starting with six currencies on the electronic exchange platform. It envisages an expansion to more African currencies and other products. GBOT Chairman Mr Venkat Chary indicated: “We are going to begin small and then expand the array of commodities.”

GBOT is regulated by the Financial Services Commission (FSC). It is located in Ebène, 15km south of the capital Port-Louis. With Mauritius

strategically located at the cross-roads of Africa and Asia, it offers a conduit for global investors to access many of the world’s fastest growing economies.

MPTA promotes Mauritius in SwitzerlandThe Ministry of Tourism and Leisure furthers the endeavour to promote Mauritius to the Swiss market by participating in various high profile events such as the Montreux Tourist Fair and sponsoring the White Turf St Moritz (A horse race on snow).

Nando Bodha, Minister of Tourism, indicated the Montreux Tourist Fair, only open to operators, is one of the largest in Switzerland. Mauritius participation will help further the promotion of the island and generate awareness and exposure of its products and qualities. Mauritius will be amongst some 8,000 Swiss exhibitors as well as neighbouring countries such as France and Italy, together with Tourist offices, Tour Operators and travel agencies. Bodha believes the fair will be “an ideal platform to widen the network with new contacts, to negotiate contracts or to assess the market.”

The continued sponsorship of the White Turf St Moritz (A horse race on snow) by the MPTA in collaboration with Beachcomber Hotels and Air Mauritius for the past 15 years, sees the event as a marketing opportunity to business people and political figures as well as 30 000 spectators attending the race.

According to the minister, the destination has a huge potential since the Swiss travel thrice yearly and there are 200,000 multimillionaires in the region.

The number of Swiss tourists travelling to Mauritius reached 10 432 at the end of September and had grown by 15.1 per cent as compared to 9 060 in September 2009.

Mauritius has initiated a direct flight to Switzerland by Edelweiss Air. The carrier has a seat capacity of 306 and will provide its services till April 2011.

Acupuncture a

nd G

olf

riginating out of China over 5000 years ago, the science of

acupuncture has seen its spread throughout ancient Egypt, the

Middle East and the Roman Empire and later into Western

Europe. Today it is seen as one of the most effective

treatments for not only pain, but promoting over

all wellbeing. Where non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory

drugs and steroid injections may have

side effects or toxicity, acupuncture does not.

It is completely natural and virtually pain free.

The repetitive action of golf may at one

time or another result in “Golfers

elbow” or lower back pain. It is

no surprise that acupuncture is

more commonly employed

by pros and amateurs

alike.

Every cell in the human body generates energy. This energy fl ows throughout the body along channels or pathways called meridians. When the fl ow of energy is interrupted or blocked, it in effect dams up like a river

producing a variety of symptoms, the most common being pain.

The insertion of fi ne, sterile acupuncture needles into

specifi c points (acupoints) on the body (along the

meridians), enables the acupuncturist to break

up the blockages restricting energy fl ow.

The stimulation of these points allows

the energy to fl ow smoothly, resulting

in the body healing itself more

swiftly.

The insertion of the needles is virtually painless, as they are incredibly thin. A phenomenon known as the “The Chi” takes place when the needle makes contact with the energy fl ow and is described as a mild to moderate heaviness or

tingling. Acupuncture has also since evolved to include the use of lasers.

Laser stimulation to acupoints has the same effi cacy as needles

and electronic stimulation on needles also intensifi es

acupuncture’s effects.

The number of treatments will vary with conditions and individuals, although some patients may experience an immediate improvement with the fi rst treatment. Most acupuncture treatments vary between 10 and 25 sessions. Where there has been little or no damage to tissue or organ systems, results are often permanent. Chronic conditions with recurring symptoms may require additional treatments. As a treatment, acupuncture can play an integral role in the reduction of and eradication of pain, reduce recovery time from injuries and prevent the development of chronic conditions which may, if left unchecked, require surgery at a later date.

• It releases your body’s natural steroids which

reduces infl ammation.• It releases endorphins which kill pain.

• It improves blood fl ow and speeds healing.• It relaxes muscle spasms.

• It calms nerve irritation.• It elevates your mood.

• It improves your memory.• It regulates hormones and body functions.

erzeugt Energie.

funktio

nie

rt d

as

Arjun Atwal (Ind)The former Asian Tour number one will be hoping to end his year on a high by winning the Hero Honda Indian Open for the second time in his career. Atwal became the first Indian to win on the PGA Tour earlier this year when he won the Whyndham Championship.

Jyoti Randhawa (Ind)Randhawa has had a poor season by his high standards where he has lost his European Tour card. But a return to the Delhi Golf Club will bring his confidence back as he has won four times on this venue previously, including three Hero Honda Indian Open titles. Shiv Kapur (Ind)Once touted Asia’s rising star, Kapur has failed to add a second victory to his resume following his lone success on the Asian Tour in 2005. But being on his home turf, the steady and consistent Indian could well break the five year title drought. He has shot a 61 at the Delhi Golf Club and also finished second here in the SAIL Open.

Rikard Karlberg (Swe)The Asian Tour rookie posted a stunning victory at Delhi Golf Club at the SAIL Open early in the season when he held off the combined challenges of Kapur and Randhawa. He is in good form after finishing third in the Barclays Singapore Open and he will be looking to end his year with a second win of the season.

Daniel Chopra (Swe)The two-time PGA Tour winner grew up at the Delhi Golf Club grounds and could well triumph here this week. He has had a tough run on the PGA Tour but a recent change in coach has brought about a light at the end of the tunnel for the Swede with Indian parentage.

Anthony Kang (US)The three-time Asian Tour winner bounced back to form with a fourth placed finish at the UBS Hong Kong Open two weeks ago. With his consistent and straight hitting game, the Korean American is expected to contend here.

Ball position in your stance should be based on the club you are using, then adjested in ball flight

If we consider the starting point as the ball

directly in the center your stance, this is most appropriate for the short irons such as wedges.

As the irons get longer e.g (3-4-5 iron) the ball moves up in your stance in small increments.

Remember moving the ball black in your stance lowers the ball flight and putting the ball more forward in your stance raises the flight mainly for long clubs (long irons and woods) when using a tee.

Positioning the ball in your stnce: the reference point should be your ankles and your feet.

Set up of the body is also very important and align your body parallel left of the target line(parallel right if you are left handed). The target line runs from the ball through the intermediate target selected when you were standing behind the ball and again imagine a parallel line from your ball to the target.

All parts of your body need to line up to the parrallel; your toes, knees, hips, shoulders and eyes must be on the parallel line to the target...To check your target once you are set is to swivel your head and allow your eyes to follow the parallel line. Do not lift your head to check alignment as this almost certainly misalign your upper body.

ARJUN CHAKRABORTY’sGOLFERS PREDICTIONSLONG LIVE WESTWOOD

Dear friends,

Hopefully you had a good sporty month. In the golfi ng world we have truly seen some spectacular action and very importantly, Tiger Woods has fi nally failed to hold on to his no. 1 position. At the beginning of this year there was a possibility that Tiger may not return to competitive golf anymore. But, I predicted he will surely return to golf and will probably hold on to his top position till the end of the season. The fi rst part of my prediction has turned true while the last part almost did. But, today I feel I should dedicate my article to the numero uno man - Lee Westwood. He has really shown great consistency during 2010 and often peaked at crucial moments. This 37 year old Ryder Cup veteran who turned pro at only 20 deserves our full respect and support for his dedication - ‘ Long Live Westwood ’. But now, let us see what sort of 2011 he is destined to have. Will he continue with this rich form ? Or will he falter ? Westwood’s planets are mostly favourable for the year 2011. So, he will maintain good form and continue to impress us. Due to the positive effect of Rahu, he is actually in an aggressive frame of mind which is paying off. Although the Goddess of success is kind to him now, he should be a little careful not to get carried away at times. During the fi rst half of 2011, his results will be partly inconsistent. Great performances with following ordinary ones will come his way. But, the second half of the year will be better for him with more consistency. Therefore, he may lose his top rank in the fi rst half temporarily. It seems the top position can be enjoyed by more than two people in the coming

season. Consequently, Mr. Westwood, you have no time to relax. You must keep one foot on the accelerator all the time. Specially Kaymer will always look to overtake you and can do so. For Westwood, Sun and Mars have always been kind. Sun stands for fame and glory and Mars stands for fi ghting spirit, strong will power and physical activities. But, Moon is affl icted by evil planets which can cause occasional lapse of concentration. He should ensure this does not happen in 2011.

In the next issue I plan to disclose my insight for Tiger Woods. What does he have up his sleeves ? Will fortune favour him ?

Till then, Enjoy !
