Swiss films can be seen on screens all over the world. Film festivals from Berlin to Venice and from Buenos Aires to Yamagata are presenting the most recent fiction, documentary, animation and short film productions from Switzerland. Many films appear in cinemas throughout Europe, America and Asia or are broadcast on television in a host of countries. Works by famous Swiss filmmakers are showcased in retrospectives at festivals and in film museums – which has already been the case in Latin America for the maestro Alain Tanner and in Madrid for the documentary filmmaker Richard Dindo in Spring 2012. Serving as the Swiss filmmakers’ partner, the promotion agency backs this diversity of initiatives, supporting them financially and establishing international contacts with festivals, world sales, distribution firms and tele vision stations. provides internatio -

nal professionals in the film industry with information about new films and trends in Switzerland. The promotion agency fosters the participation of Swiss films at festivals with subsidies and reinforces the chances of an international release with direct support to foreign distribution firms. is, with its team in Zurich and Geneva, as well as with its website www.swissfilms.ch, your link to Swiss films.

Swiss film and the film-going public guarantee that which, alongside quality, is the overriding criterion in film promotion: diversity. This diversity is of course first and foremost down to producers, directors and screenplay writers, their profes-sionalism and the originality of their projects. However, it is also due to the fact that the Swiss market is dispersed and divided into three linguistic regions with differing cultures. It is therefore not surprising that Switzerland has a high density of producers, as you can see in this guide.

However, diversity not only exists in the production and making of feature films, documentaries or animated films, but also on the screen. In the context of European film, there is a large audience for Swiss film in the cinema. Increasingly, access to culturally valuable films is also being sought outside

conventional cinema release via online platforms. It is therefore all the more surprising that there is a growth in film viewings at festivals in Switzerland due to people wishing to experience films first hand, and that festivals are gaining in importance as a further outlet in the range of film release channels.

The impact of film culture in the home country is one thing, but how it is perceived abroad through its international presence and the recognition afforded to films at renowned foreign festivals and competitions is another. One thing is certain, Swiss film can benefit enormously from intensive interaction with neighbouring countries. That is why European coproductions are extremely welcome. They support and encourage quality and diversity in Swiss film.

It’s a really straightforward thing to shoot a film in Switzerland! It’s easy to do so because all the condi-tions have been put in place to optimize audiovisual projects, including both the creative and economic aspects. Switzerland offers a large variety of natural settings and architectural works dating from different epochs. The climate ranges from the polar cold of the everlasting snows in the Alps to the heady Mediter-ranean temperatures in the southern regions of the country. This diversity is concentrated within a small land mass traversed by a rapid-access road and rail communications networks. Add to this the attractive Euro-Swiss Franc exchange rate, the flexibility of working conditions and the efficiency of the service companies. Switzerland is an openair studio that offers you numer-ous economic advantages.

The Swiss National Film Commission, “Film Location Switzerland”, is the official organization in charge of assisting foreign filmmakers to carry out their film pro-jects in Switzerland:

• Providing information about Switzerland• Dealing with local authorities• Simplifying administrative procedures• Gaining access to locations• Gaining access to actor directories• Finding location scouts and technicians• Finding coproduction partners

This helps to focus interest on our national heritage – natural, artistic and cultural – and encourages coopera-tion between the Swiss audiovisual industry and foreign production companies.

Tobeeligibleforpublicfunding,afilmcoproducedbetweenSwitzerlandandanothercountrymustbeofficiallyrecognizedasaSwissfilm.Thefollowingrulesapply:

• An independent Swiss film producer must be chosen as a partner, who will then apply for public funds.

• Bilateral coproduction agreements exist with Germany, Austria, Canada, France, Luxemburg, Italy, Belgium and the French community of Belgium. With the exception of Canada, these agreements cover only films produced for theatrical exhibition. Switzerland is a member of the European convention for coproductions and by this multi-lateral convention is linked to many more European countries. In most cases, the minimal Swiss participation required varies between 10% and 20%. If no coproduction agreement is applicable – as is the case for the USA, for instance – the minimal Swiss participation is 50%.

• The artistic and technical participation (which includes the hiring of Swiss technicians, assistants and actors) must be proportional to the Swiss financial participation. This condition also applies to postproduction. Since there are no fixed criteria for the evaluation of the percentage, decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

• Once theses conditions have been met, the Swiss copro-ducer can acquire the official agreement from the Swiss Federal Office of Culture.

Films officially coproduced with Switzerland haveaccess to the public film funding of the SwissFederalofficeofCulture.

• Selective public funding sees an independent expert committee choose and propose film projects for production subsidies. The maximum subsidy per film is 1,5 million Swiss Francs and cannot exceed 50% of the production costs (Swiss part).

• Succès cinéma is a funding programme based on a film’s success. For each ticket bought in a Swiss cinema, the Swiss screenwriter, director, producer, distributor and cinema owner gets a bonus which must be reinvested in their next film project.

• Other funding programmes include the annual competi-tion for the Swiss Film Prize Quartz, as well as subsidies for the release of a film or for its participation in an inter-national film festival.

Sequels, threequels and prequels dominated the biggest film releases of 2011 with the end of the Harry Potter franchise topping the list with more than $1 billion in receipts.Other films reaching the billion-dollar sales mark included Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. In 2010, only two films, Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland, reached $1 billion.Another popular trend includes animated family-friendly films in 3D, while the slew of new comic book superhero films did not soar to the top.

Peacock Film was founded in 1984 by Rolando Colla (director, screenwriter) and Peter Indergand (director of photography), with the aim of producing films and videos. During its first years, Peacock Film produced mainly commissioned and advertising films. In 1985 Elena Pedrazzoli joined the firm, initially as a production assistant and later as a producer. In 1989 Peter Indergand sold his shares to Elena Pedrazzoli, who became managing director later. In 1994 Colla made his first medium-length fiction film “Jagdzeit”, which won five international awards. From then on, Rolando Colla and Elena Pedrazzoli’s work shifted strongly in the direction of inde-pendent film production, with fewer commissioned and advertising films being produced.During the past years, Peacock Ltd (with a share capital of 100,000 CHF) produced half a dozen commissioned works, two full-length television films and a diverse number of short films, as well as Colla’s latest fiction film “Giochi D’Estate” (Summer Games), Switzerland’s official entry for the Academy Awards. For a number of years Elena Pedrazzoli has also produced films with external, independent direc-tors from Switzerland and abroad (among others: “Masàngeles” by Beatriz Flores Silva, in coproduction with Saga Film, Bruxelles and “Operation Casablanca”, by Laurent Nègre).

Founded by Xavier Grin in 2000, PS. Productions first acquired its know-how at the service of several foreign co-productions teams that were shooting in Switzerland. Bolstered by its international experiences, the firm has been developing its own productions since 2006.In 2008, two first documentaries were released in theaters: “Cher Mon-sieur, cher papa” by François Kohler (“Visions du Réel” international competition) and “Un petit coin de paradis...” by Jacqueline Veuve (offi-cial selection of the Locarno Festival). PS then went on to produce two non documentary movies: Plus là pour personne (2009), Jean-Laurent Chautems’s first feature-length film, se-lected for the international competition in Namur, and then Séverine Cornamusaz’s Coeur animal (Animal Heart), which won the Best Swiss Fiction award in 2010. With more than eight international awards, the movie signaled that PS. had indeed become a full-fledged producer.Pursuing its expansion, PS. Productions intends to become an internatio-nal player for the long haul thanks to its co-productions, all while initia-ting regional projects.Cyanure, Séverine Cornamusaz’s second movie, currently in postproduc-tion, is a Swiss-Canadian co-production.PS. seeks to develop projects in an innovative perspective, underpinned by the desire to support young filmmakers. In tune with the evolution of society and sensitive to identity-related is-sues, PS. is currently producing documentaries in collaboration with broadcasting partners such as RTS-Télévision suisse romande and ARTE.

Fantoche was launched in 1995 to enrich Switzerland’s cultural scene with an international animation film festival. Ever since, the festival has been highly appreciated by professionals as well as the general public. During Fantoche’s latest edition in 2011, more than 70 different programmes with 217 short and feature-length films from 34 countries were shown. Switzerland’s biggest and most prestigious animated festival recorded over 34’500 entries.

HighlightsWith it’s tenth edition in September 2012, Fantoche will again, with curiosity and passion, track the global development of animation film: The heart of the festival are the international competition and – since 2009 – the Swiss competition, which aim to attract bold, artistic and visionary animation films. Fantoche encourages the vision of young talents, puts Swiss animated film making on an international level and shows the world’s most important produc-tions, as well as the viewing public’s favorites. Fantoche takes a close look at specific aspects of animation with blocks devoted to particular themes, historic features and countries. The festival showcases work from art colleges and gives professionals the chance to attend workshops with leading international figures. Not least Fantoche also presents a rich program of events for children and teens and organizes animation workshops in schools. Numerous fringe events, such as exhibitions, presentations and discussion forums, offer the opportunity to take an in-depth look at specific themes and to rub shoulders with film makers and produ-cers. All in all, Fantoche is a festival marked by encounter, exchange and inspiration. Please check our website www.fantoche.ch for periodic updates, downloads and latest information.

Biel/Bienne (1 hour drive from Geneva, Basel and Zürich), the largest bilingual city in Switzerland, makes a bridge between the Swiss French and the Swiss German cultures using the cinema as a universal language. The French Film Festival of Helvetia (FFFH), which is one of the youngest film festivals in Switzerland, dedicates its programming to French speaking films winking at Swiss cinema too. For five days, about 40 films, many of which are international previews, are unveiled in original version subtitled in German (45% of the audience speaks German). Some of them are not released in Switzerland (Section découverte). The Festival organize two short film Competitions. The Festival starts with the Children’s Day. Then, the event takes the symbolism of the three-colored French flag. Throughout its seven-year history, more than 220 talents have conver-ged in Biel/Bienne to present more than 200 feature-length films and 60 short films. Everyday, the festival gives the spectators the chance to attend directly after the screening a special moment of exchange and encounter with professionals, directors and actors. In 2011, the festival welcomed famous guests like Ariane Ascaride, Tahar Rahim, Carlo Brandt and Robert Guédiguian. One of the goals of these open discus-sions (which are simultaneously translated into German) is to bring the Swiss German and Swiss French cultures together. Moreover, talents greatly enjoy discussing with a bilingual audience.

Particular attention is paid to the films of artistic, pedagogical and humanitarian qualities with the goal of stimulating knowledge and understanding between people and cultures. This doesn’t exclude entertainment quality movies.

Special importance is given to the active participation on the entire school institution.

The Festival has 3 competitive sections, two feature-length film competitions and one short film competition. Besides, various out of competition sections enrich Festival program.

Since 1999, Black Movie film festival offers annually the largest cinematographic event evocative of Geneva’s cosmo-politan nature. Always on the lookout for the best in Asian, African and South American cinema, the festival’s programme focuses on themes such as social topics (migration, clan mentality, war, adolescence), current events, popular cinema, new urban cultures, or defined by genre (Latin-American thrillers, Nigerian videos, Korean documentaries…), and retrospec-tives of directors. Black Movie is a contemporary film festival based on today’s social and aesthetic realities, presenting an original and inno-vative programme. In the previous editions, some of the world’s most innovative filmmakers have attended the festi-val, such as the Argentinian Lisandro Alonso, the Korean Hong Sang-soo, the Taiwanese Tsai Ming-Liang, the Mexican Carlos Reygadas, the Chinese Jia Zhang Ke, … And there is lots more: discussion lounge, round table, Dj and Vj evenings.

Since its inception in 1980, the Fribourg International Film Festival (FIFF) stands for a dazzling film selection and the pro-motion of independent cinema from all over the world. Today, the FIFF is perceived as a high-profile platform for creative and cultural exchange and as a place of cinematographic discovery. Its core is the high-level competition of feature-length fiction and documentary films, mainly from Latin America, Asia and Africa. The official selection is completed by three short film programmes – a barometer of current trends and a treasure trove of new talents. Parallel sections offer the possibility to explore a cinematographic topic, genre or period more in-depth. Some 100 films are shown each year as national or international premieres. In addition selected screenings are followed by professional talks, such as master classes or panel discussions. Over 30,000 spectators are expected every year.

Since 1964, the Solothurn Film Festival has presented every year an overview of Swiss filmmaking of the preceding year. Solothurn is a popular meeting spot for the film and media industry as well as the broad public. Apart from it’s main focus on current Swiss film productions of all genres and lengths, in-cluding many premieres, the festival’s programme also shows a retrospective of a prominent filmmaker or actor. Furthermore it hosts the sections “Upcoming”, which presents works of young talents and music-clips, and “Focus”, which is dedicated to films on contemporary issues. The screenings are accompanied by a variety of daily round-table discussions, talks, film industry meetings, master classes and seminars. Besides the official programme Solothurn also hosts the Swiss Film Academy’s an-nouncement of the nominees for the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz» during the “Night of the Nominations”.

In January 2012 the new festival director Seraina Rohrer opened the 47th Solothurn Film Festival with the fiction film “Eine wen iig, dr Dällebach Kari” by Oscar-winning director Xavier Koller. This year some 1’500 professionals were hosted and over 57’000 cine-ma-goers enjoyed 232 films in different programme sections.

The retrospective called “Rencontre” was devoted to the Swiss actress Marthe Keller, who presented in Solothurn a selection of films of her long-standing international career, such as “Toute une vie” by Claude Lelouch, “Marathon Man” by John Schlesinger, “Bobby Deerfield” by Sydney Pollack or “Elles” by Luis Galvão Teles.

The Jury Prize “Prix de Soleure”, endowed with CHF 60’000, was awarded to Fernand Melgar for his documentary “Vol spécial”. The Public Award, endowed with CHF 20’000, went to “Die Wie-senberger”, a documentary by Bernard Weber and Martin Schilt.

Over the past decade, the FIFDH has continued to question the UN Human Rights Council. As an independent platform, it disseminates voices coming from all over the world. Film directors, defenders of freedom, victims of violations – hundreds have denounced the dangerous drifts and abuses of their governments. Considering the current context, the Festival’s raison d’être is still and above all to denounce violations of human dignity via written word, speech and image. We firmly believe that cinema has the power to bring about change in the world. For our tenth birthday, it is this marvelous capacity of cinema that we have celebrated while also paying tribute to all those who resist and who make peace. Always on the programme: highly artistic films d’auteur, creative documentaries and fic-tion that ally the 7th art to our inner and universal quest for meaning.

VisionsduRéel,18thedition

Visions du Réel 2012 is proud to present a varied and fascina-ting programme. Among the 3500 films screened by the selection committee 110 films have been selected for the competitive sections of the programme. They are added to the films programmed in the Ateliers, Séances spéciales, Focus and Port Franc sections. 47 producing countries are represented. The Swiss productions are excellent and reflect the high quality of production in our country. The criteria adopted by the selection committee include respect for the persons filmed and for the spectator, the profound implication of the filmmaker in his or her work, the need for the film to be made, the originality of the projects, consistency between subject and form, the treatment of time in the filming and editing, the composition of the frame, and the beauty of the shots... but also the desire to combine the expectations of the professionals with those of a wider audience, convinced that cinéma du réel today is the most authentic and accessible form of contemporary art. The films of Visions du Réel provoke thought, tears, and laughter. In Nyon the cinéma du réel is a cinema in its own right, a moving, intelligent, amusing, serious, and enriching spectacle.
