Webbs Car Show 28th August 2011

Pete Dodschun worked very hard to put on a club stand at theWebbs Car Show over the August Bank Holiday weekend, but thesupport from other members was poor. Not one rally car was presentand only Andy Wooldridge and Dood Pearce arrived with a vehicle toput on show. There were over 100 cars on show and other clubs were wellrepresented. If our club is to prosper we need to be in the public eyeand encourage new members. A couple of members did turn up to lend their support, JeremyHancock and Holly Burridge, but where were the rest of you? We were supposed to have a stand at the Pershore Plum Festivalthe next day, but Pete had to cancel it due to lack of support.

When it became clear that the classnumbers would not be sufficient, Stephens knew that the title was his and thathe didn’t need to make the trip to the last round from his home in NorthernIreland. In the event outgoing champion AlastairMoffatt took his first victory of the year.Richard Pinkney picked up a ‘maximum’on Test 3, costing him 20 seconds, butrecovered to second in class, just under10 seconds behind the Caterham ofSimon Echlin.Results1 Alastair Moffatt (Mini Special) 795.62 Simon Echlin (Caterham 7) 811.93 Richard Pinkney (Caterham 7) 821.8

What a fantastic job Pete Wood and his team did with this years Woodpecker StagesRally, and what a fantastic drive by Andy Burton/Robin Kellard to win (again!) by 40 secsover Roger Chilman/Andrew Sankey. The weather was very dry and dust was a bit of aproblem but Burton posted fastest time on all but stage one, despite not running first onthe road. Chilman managed to maintain his narrow 3 second lead up to the end of stage 2but then Burton surged ahead. Steve Perez/Carl Williamson started at No 1 but were 10 secs off the pace on the firststage, and then on stage 4 in Radnor they went off on a tightening right hander and tooka maximum. They were not the only crew to be caught out on this corner. Their helicoptersupport crew clearly didn’t tell them!! Stage 1 was 8.76 miles of Haye Park and Shaun Gardener/Ben Innes were on a chargeright from the word go, using all the grass and a bit more to be only 13 secs adrift. Theykept up the momentum to finish 4th overall just 9 secs behind Roger Duckworth/ShaunO’Gorman. Michael O’Brien/Paul Spooner had a good run to finish 5th O/A 1 min 51 secsbehind Burton. Besides Andy Burton the star of the show was Daniel O’Brien (Michael’s son) whocame a creditable 15th overall in his Focus. This was the first time on this event for thiscool headed youngster and I am sure we haven’t heard the last of him. There was much discussion about Andy Burton at the finish when he arrived at thelater stages almost on his maximum lateness. Apparently he had stopped between stagesto allow the brakes to cool down, a crafty move which obviously paid off. Several crews were entered under the S&WMC banner the best being PhilBrown/Hamish Campbell (36th O/A) in an Impreza. The only others to finish were AshleyEvans/Daniel Evans (86th O/A) in a Citroen C2. Sadly the Mk I Cortina 1500 of DarrenAnderson/Charles Gates retired after stage 4 with suspension damage. Many thanks to all those who marshalled and those who worked so hard before andduring the event to put on such a superb rally. There were 138 entries and 104 finishers.

VSCC Central Rally 20th August 2011 It is some years since The VSCC has organised a rally on map 152 and I have

not done one on this map since the 1976 Tour of Britain. The start was only a coupleof miles west of Silverstone and you could hear cars racing around the circuit. I was navigating for Mark Garffit in his 1937 Frazer Nash BMW 319/55 with itsvery throaty 2 litre 6 cylinder engine. There were 44 entries ranging from a 1936Morgan three wheeler to a 4¼ litre Bentley. We were seeded No. 7 with the championship leader, Ray Edge, behind us in his3½ litre Bentley, which seemed a bit odd. Ray had Cath Woodman navigating forhim and she has already won three rallies this year, so we guessed they would be themain opposition. The organisers had problems with the local RLO who insisted that most of theroute was run at 20 mph which was a bit slow, and in some areas quite dangerous. The instructions for the first half started with a problem. You had to cross adisused railway three times and then go to Spot height 177. However, in order to getto spot height 177 you had to pass through several others which were not listed. We then missed a passage control code board. Well “missed it” is the wrongphrase. We were approaching a manned gate and the board was positioned on the leftwith several people standing by it. From a distance I took it to be a secret time controland looked down to see how we were doing time wise. We passed the board and Iheld out the time card and the marshal waved us through the gate. “Is this a control?” I asked. “No, we are just manning the gate” he replied. Mark didn’t think it wasa code board so we continued. Unfortunately it was ! The route wound its way up to the outskirts of Northampton, with a plot and bashtulip section before the lunch halt. This caused a bit of head scratching with some ofthe tulips having no approach or departure, and one being drawn as it appears on theground and not on the map. Twice the trip meter failed to restart after I had zeroed itwhich caused some frantic measuring on the map. As expected Ray Edge/Cath Woodman had cleaned the first half and we were on19 mins after our missed code board. The second half started in Abthorpe with a listof Spot heights inter-mingled with a number of dashes. I took this to mean that eachdash was an undisclosed spot height, however the organisers missed out one dashwhich caused us to drop a minute while I guessed what they had intended. Then youhad to avoid a series of spot heights to get to a particular junction. This was fairlystraight forward until the next section forced you to go through one of the spot heightsyou had just avoided! The final plot and bash section read “pass through 2, don’t pass through 7, passthrough 5, don’t pass through 9” etc. This turned out to be the green dots of a cycleway. The Novice class, who had easier instructions, also had their problems when theywere given a map reference which was not on the map! I think the route instructionsneeded better checking. We dropped another 5 mins in the second half but managed to scrape a 2nd classaward and 9th overall. The missed passage board cost us second place. Ray Edge/CathWoodman won by 7 mins.

Over the next six weeks the Intercontinental Rally Challenge teams willcover 3,144 kilometres getting from Zlin in the Czech Republic to Pecs,Hungary then to Sanremo in northern Italy before descending upon Perth forthe RACMSA Rally of Scotland. With five rallies in sixty three days, it is abusy, busy time for all the competitors. It is also a very hectic time for the core team at Rally of Scotland as we workto deliver the third running of the rally. All the printing deadlines for RoadBooks, Safety Plans, Rally Guides, Operations manuals etc are fast ap-proaching. There also some really exciting announcements waiting to bemade over activities taking place throughout the rally week. All should comeclearer this week. What we really, really do need though is more of the most important ingredi-ent to any event....marshals. The rallying calendar in Scotland is incrediblybusy and everyone’s time is at a premium. However we are sort of volun-teers for some of our stages and the service regroups. This is the primeopportunity to interact with some of the best drivers from around Europe andto get close to the action, not to mention no car parking charges for gettinginto the stages!Andy, Colin and Michelle would be delighted if you could visitrallyofscotland.com and download a Marshal Registration Form and send itonto them. Registration forms for marshals and radio operators are nowavailable to download from the marshals’ page of www.rallyofscotland.com.The final check of the road book was completed just recently and the stagesare in fantastic condition. There are areas where the Forestry Commission-Scotland are carrying out harvesting just now to thin out some areas ofstages that will raise the speeds. The National event also covers 10 of the15 Special Stages increasing the amount of action on offer over the week-end.PROTON, Skoda, Peugeot and Subaru have now all confirmed that they willbe testing during the week leading up to the rally. The IRC media team havebeen telling us that they would expect around 10 Skoda Fabia’s to be inScotland, and when that is added to the other teams expected to compete, organisers are looking at there being 18 S2000 cars on the entry list. Then

16we have the two Subaru Impreza R4 cars with the Japanese crews, a qualityentry list even at this early stage. To keep the reputation we have established for friendly marshalling and agreat Scottish welcome to our competitors, we require marshals for thereconnaissance on Thursday and Friday, the opening stage(s) on Friday nightand the full days of competition on Saturday and Sunday. It goes without saying that your contribution to Rally of Scotland is whatmakes the event the success it is in the eyes of Eurosport, the competitorsand our Partners. Thank you for your help over the last couple of years and, with the most exciting entry yet coming this October, let’s make this one anextra special one.For marshalling enquiries please contact [email protected]

Are you an MSA Licensed Radio Marshal?

As outlined above, we need a large number of marshals and radio marshals to makethe RACMSA Rally of Scotland, the safe and fun event that competitors and spectatorsdemand. After the rally in 2009 and 2010 we asked for feedback from crews to see what we cando to improve the experience for us all. One thing a number of you questioned was theneed to have a separate system (B System) for positive reporting. We have digestedthis consideration, analysed the requirement, benefits and challenges this brings, andcan now advise for 2011 we will not be using a separate positive reporting system. Itwill mean that messages on C System will have to be kept short, sharp and to aminimum but we are sure this will not be an issue for you.

So, for 2011 we will be using two communication networks:· A System. This is the management system. Controlled from Rally Headquar-

ters, operators will be located at each stage start and finish. Mobile officials,FIVs, Rescue Units, Doctors and Recovery Units will all be equipped with ASystem sets.

· C System. This is the stage operations system, commonly known as ‘81’being the MSA Safety and Administration Frequency. Crews are at start, finish, spectator areas and at a maximum distance of 5k.

We appreciate the demands on your diaries this year and that the economic down-turn may be impacting your wallet. If you can assist, you will be guaranteed a ‘doublerun’ on Saturday, the possibility of a ‘double run’ on Sunday, a warm Scottish wel-come and a goody bag.If you are a MSA licensed Radio Marshal and are available for the event, we wouldlike to hear from you. If you can help, or just want more information, please contactthe Communications team:
