Bruno van DoorenReading this thread, I noticed someone posting 'at most a shinken, but not a

katana'. Does that make sense? A shinken IS a katana, right?

Eduardo PereiraHi, Bruno. A Shinken is a "true blade", "live blade" i.e. a real blade with a cutting

    edge.

Eduardo PereiraI guess (please anyone correct me if i'm wrong) that when we say "that's a

shinken" we suppose it to be a katana ('cause it's more common to speak about a katana being an

iaito - for iai practice - or being a shinken - for tameshigiri practice or collection/antique... ), but it

could be a wakizashi, tanto, naginata... any japanese blade could be "real" or not.

Meik SkossAs I use the terms, "shinken" mean "live blade" (one that is sharp/will cut

somebody/something), regardless of the type of weapon. An "iaito" is a practice sword with a

rebated edge (one that will not cut), made from an alloy of aluminum and zinc; if the blade is made

of steel that is not sharpened, I call it a "habikito." "Habiki" can also mean techniques using steel

swords (sharp or not), as in Maniwa Nen-ryu and Tatsumi-ryu. I believe other ryu may also refer to

    techniques as "habiki waza."

Graham FarquharMr Skoss is a mogito any different from a habikito or is it just a different term?

Meik SkossMogito just means a sword an "imitation sword," i.e., a blade that does not have a

sharpened blade. The word is used for both iaito, which do have a mass that approximates that of a

shinken, and swords used in kenbu (lit., "sword dancing"), the dramatic re-enactments of kenjutsu

seen in certain kinds of Japanese drama. I suppose all swords that do not cut could be called

mogito, but iaito and habikito are used in budo, serious training. I suppose that is why those get a bit

more "respect" of a sort (with my apologies to Aretha Franklin for her wonderful song).

Graham FarquharMr Skoss thank you for the explanation - it has certainly cleared up a

misunderstanding on my part as I hadn't realised a iaito could also be considered a mogito but if it

has the mass then that makes sense. Also I hadn't thought it would also cover kenbu. Apologies to

    others for the thread drift.

have a different view point. I do have a view though if it's antique and Nihonto. I wouldn't practice

with it. That's what Chinese shinken are for.
