President’s Corner ity of our members. Kudos to Francis Garrett. We're com-puterized! Ain't God Good. (Borrowed from Jerry Clower, 1975.)

It looks like we're going to have a big attendance at our first paint-out at Salado, TX. Thanks to our new Paint-outs Chairman, Walt Davis. I urge you to sign up for this. It promises to be a delightful experience.

Our show chairman, Pat Jones has been busy with the Pro-

spectus. She is working with Ron Stephens to get it pro-duced, and hopefully we can include it in the March issue of SCENE.

I want to take this opportunity to personally thank Nancy Friedel for the tireless effort she has put into editing the SCENE. She has spent the last eight years putting it together and seeing to its printing and distribution. Hats Off to her and our best wishes for her continued success.

career of fast paced advertising where he spent his early years as an Art Director and the last 25 years as a Production Man-ager at several advertising agencies in Dallas. So, tight deadlines and working with the printing trades is not new to him.

“Like a deer in the headlights”, Ron Stephens sat in the Janu-ary SWS board meeting trying to assimilate all the informa-tion coming from all the com-mittee chair heads. When it was over he thought “Lord what have I gotten myself into”

The new format before you is a commitment to SWS to have the best newsletter possible. The SWS board thought it necessary to have the newslet-ter available to post on the web site for most of the mem-bership to view, download and print if desired. That is now possible.

At our last Board Meeting the members unanimously adopted my recommendation of Ron Stephens as our new editor of the Scene. Ron is a new member of SWS and a very capable stu-dent in my watercolor class at the Heritage Center in Irving which I call Watercolor Fun.

Also we were happy to discover that our corresponding Secre-tary, Francis Garrett, has devel-oped an e-mail list of nearly 90% of our membership and can therefore get emergency infor-mation out quickly to the major-

the latter. Although her painting technique is very different from my own, I became intrigued with hers and have since enjoyed the results that I was able to achieve. The most meaningful experience for me was in observing, and then attempting, her patient application of multiple glazes on 300 lb. hot press watercolor paper. The effects are well worth the wait for dry glazes after each wash. During the workshop, Catherine shared many painting tips and professional advice from her painting experience, and I found these to be very helpful to my personal struggle with watercolor painting and exhibiting. One of the many "finds" I came away with was the wonderful 3" syn-thetic wash brushes that Cath-erine uses and sells to workshop participants. I've used a 2" wash

brush for years, but I found that the 3' brush, especially the qual-ity brush I bought from Cath-erine, is ideal for the many glazes needed for her painting style. I used my personal "beer" allowance for the month to buy a book and a 2" and 3" brush – That's how good they were! At the end of an all-too-short week of painting and enjoy-able conversation, we were all amazed at the quality results in the students' work. I know that there were some very talented students in the class, but most of the credit for good student work is always a result of a talented and sup-portive teacher. Catherine's zest for art is contagious, and once again I've caught the bug! I offer a very special "Thank you" to SWS for the opportunity to

Thank you, SWS, for giving me the opportunity to take Nita Leland’s workshop through the Stepping Stone Award program. Nita’s four day workshop at Asel’s on Cedar Springs was packed with good infor-mation in the form of lecture and helpful handouts. There was time for creative experimentation in col-lage, monotype, and painting on traditional water-color paper coated randomly with acrylic medium.

I appreciate the organized presentation and optimum use of time. There was much “food for thought” as well as hands-on working time and critique sessions. I feel fortunate and greatly enriched by the experience.

For those of you have not considered applying for this Stepping Stone Award offered by SWS, I would certainly encourage you to do so
