Un-EAR-Plugged: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the PiccoloBut Were Too Afraid to Ask!

I. Similarities to the FluteA. Basic fingerings ! 7Y

B. Basic sound productionC. Should be thought of as an extension of the flute rangeD. Share similar parts in music

II. Differences Between Flute & Piccolo / f ,A. Transposing instrument (at the octave)1’ 7

B. Range is limited from written Dl to C4C. Embouchure hole is slightly smaller than flute i}’D. Piccolo sits slightly higher on lip than fluteE. Requires less air than flute, but air stream must be fast & well supportedF. Vibrato (more similar to flute high register vibrato) ia.* • ,

G. Intonation differences — will discuss in detail under section VI-E

V. How to Choose the Right Piccolo for Your NeedsA. Questions to Ask

1. Used outside? (i.e. marching band)2. If yes, will it also be used for concert season?3. What about headjoint styles? (i.e. wing lip plate vs. none)4. Budget

B. Get qualified assistance if possible 4.VI. Excuses & Misconceptions About Playing Piccolo

A. “It messes up my flute playing.”1. More often than not, fundamental flute playing is incorrect2. Piccolo will only amplify problems that already exist on flute

B. “It hurts my ears!”1. Hearing protection is a MUST! ¶.L rv€2. Practice time must be limited, especially in small spaces

C. “The keys are too close together.”1. It does take getting used to, just like when first starting flute2. Technique is often easier on piccolo because there is no ‘reach’

D. “The school piccolo is terrible!”1. Instrument must be well maintained2. Piccolos are quick to fall out of adjustment & must be readjusted often, especially

if used during marching season!H. “My director is always cutting me because I can’t play in tune &/or I’m too loud.”

1. Intonation is completely different than flute, & every piccolo is slightly differenta. Working with a tuner is a MUST!b. Must have a large vocabulary of alternate fingerings at your disposal

2. Dynamic control must also be practiced - long tones!3. Hard work & practice won’t matter if the instrument isn’t well maintained

VII. The Truth About Piccolo Playing & Reasons to Play ItA. It will lead to better flute playing!

1. More control2. Better dynamics3. Increased embouchure flexibility

B. It takes additional study & practice on top of your daily flute regimentC, Seriously considering a career in flute? Then you HAVE to play it & play it WELLD. Opportunity to play important solo parts in orchestra &/or bandE. It’s beginning to get its own place as a solo instrument

1. The literature for piccolo has exploded in the past 10 years2. A few degree programs exist specificaih for piccolo majors

‘viii. Question & Ans er Session

IX. PerformanceA. Vivaldi: Adagio from “Concerto in C Major, F.Vl No.4 (UIL Class 11 solo)B. Gordon Jacob: March to the River Wesen from “The Pied Piper” (UIL Class I solo)

OR Vincent Perschetti: Parable for Solo Piccolo (also a UIL Class I solo)

How to use this chart: Make sure you are warmed up thoroughly, then tune to your normal tuning pitch(for flute/piccolo, D2 and A2 are the best notes for tuning purposes). Tune using LITTLE or NO vibrato.Always play at a comfortable dynamic (about nf). Once you are in tune, play the chromatic scale, slowlyin half notes or whole notes breathing as often as necessary. Have a friend watch the tuner (xhere youcan not see it) and hae hin’her log each note’s pitch tendenc\ using the symbols t Keep the dnamiclevel and air stream steady’ Rcfcr to chart and memorize the tendencies of your particular instrument, then work to resolve those notes that are troublesome. Repeat this e\erclse eerv 6 weeks or after you feelscr if’cant oroercss has been made
