Historic Warlingham
The charming and historic village of Warlingham lies at the heart of Surrey’s Green belt, situated on the scarp slope of the North Downs, with panoramic views over central London. The village is surrounded by rolling chalk meadow hillsides
interspersed with woodlands.
All Saint’s Church dates back to around the year 1250. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury during the reign of Henry VIII, Edward VI and for a short time Mary I began experimenting with the first Book of Common Prayer at this church.
In 1841 Warlingham had 512 inhabitants. A notable resident of the Victorian period was Sir Joseph Swan, inventor of the incandescent light bulb.
During the Second World War, Warlingham was witness to much of the Battle of Britain which was fought in the skies above this part of Surrey. Fighter planes from nearby former RAF bases Biggin Hill and Kenley would intercept German bombers on their way to London along the valley between Warlingham and Woldingham, then known as ‘Bombers Alley’. Memorial stands on the village green, dedicated to the many local people who made sacrifices in the two world wars.
Best of both worlds
Warlingham is centred on the village green where you will find a variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops including a pharmacy and post office. There is also a Sainsbury’s supermarket nearby.
For those that enjoy outdoor pursuits, Warlingham has
direct access to the surrounding countryside, including
Blanchman’s Farm Nature Reserve which covers 25 acres
and includes a restored pond and around 10,000 native
trees, providing plenty of scope for walking and cycling.
Warlingham Sports Club founded in 1856 offers a host
of facilities including football, tennis, cricket, squash
and racketball. Warlingham Rugby Football Club offers
rugby to all ages and also has a women’s team. There is a
good choice of local golf courses and equestrian facilities,
whilst the nearby towns of Oxted and Caterham offer a
wider range of shopping facilities and both provide leisure
centres.

FIRST CLASS EDUCATIONBOTH STATE & INDEPENDENT
Education is well catered for with a good mix of independent and state schools in the area. The three most notable private schools are Woldingham School for Girls aged 11-18, Whitgift, an independent school for boys aged 11-18 and Caterham School, a co-educational school for pupils aged 3-18 years. Warlingham Village primary School for children 4-11, Warlingham School & Sixth Form College for 11-18 years and de Stafford secondary school are the main state schools.
