IDEAS TO INCREASE ATTENDANCE AT YOUR CLUB ON NON-LEAGUE DAY

• Offer free entry or ‘pay what you want’ for all supporters. There have been some phenomenal crowds recorded using these incentives with reciprocal revenue generated through increased purchases of food, drink and merchandise.

• Offer discounts for season ticket holders of Premier League and Championship Clubs

• Issue a gift to supporters on arrival.

• Discuss moving KO times with leagues and/or nearby clubs, to maximise potential attendance. This is particularly relevant in areas with a high concentration of non-League clubs.

• Offer discounts or free entry to armed forces and emergency services

• Speak to youth teams about being mascots. Twenty two mascots leading both teams out will encourage parents to attend and build relationships

• Organise a “community day” with free coaching, penalty shootout competitions, inflatables and raffles etc.

• Run a Twitter campaign to promote your match. For example, #Target500 if you are trying to attract 500 supporters.

• Try and contact any local celebrities or special guests (Mayor, MP etc) who live in the area who may like to be a guest for the day.

• Incorporate a fund raising initiative. There may be a local cause or charity for which you would like to raise money, thus galvanising community interest

• Ensure the local press are kept abreast of plans and get them to run articles in advance

• Organise a supporters’ match before the game, or run a half time penalty shootout competition

• Run a 5-a-side tournament and invite local teams, newspapers and businesses to play.

• Advertise the event in your local area through posters and fliers

• Run special offers in the bar (e.g. discount drink offers)

• Enter a Non-League Day note on the fixtures in your programme / website to make it look more official

• Use contacts at Premier League and Football League clubs to promote your match through their media channels.

• Issue a commemorative match day programme. This could include submissions from supporters and staff; and is a perfect opportunity to showcase the history of the club and what it has to offer.

• Offer a pickup service on the day for elderly or infirm supporters.

• Even if your team isn’t at home on Non-League Day, there are still offers you can put in place to embrace the occasion. For example, you might be able to offer free or subsidised travel if your club is playing away. Part of the supporter experience is watching a club play home and away, so these factors could be taken into consideration.

Clubs are advised of this seasons Non-League

Day. Being promoted for 12 October, there’s

plenty of time to think out some ideas and

promote it locally. See below for a list of

some ideas you may wish to consider?

AFC STONEHAM- GROUND MOVE

AFC Stoneham will be moving to the new Stoneham Lane complex during September and the League has received the following communication from the club regarding entry to the complex: AFC Stoneham will shortly after the start of the 2019-20 season be moving to our new facility. Our first handful of games in both leagues will be at our current ground at The HP Arena. The following is taken from the Hampshire FA Website. Hampshire FA is proud to announce that they have been appointed as operators of the £9 million Stoneham Lane Football Complex facility, due to open in Autumn 2019. They are part of the Parklife Project which is an FA initiative to ensure the income generated at the football clubs is put back into funding grassroots football within the local area. In order to enter the facility, ALL users will need to register beforehand." By 'ALL users' they mean anyone who wishes to enter the ground, manager, coach, players, parent, spectator. Everyone who attends your away game at the facility will have to register first. By sharing this now, rather than dropping it in the form of a match day notification 7 days before a game, clubs are advised that it is quick and easy and can be completed at any time. http://www.hampshirefa.com/news/2019/jun/18/register-to-use-stoneham-lane-football-complex

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

THE FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND

Just 84 days after Manchester City embarrassed/humiliated/trounced Watford in last Season’s FA Cup Final the Competition springs to life again with the Extra Preliminary Round for this season. It would obviously be rather pie in the sky to say the road to Wembley starts here for, unlike the FA Vase, Wembley is far out of reach for clubs at our level and the Holy Grail therefore is probably the Third or Fourth Qualifying Rounds – reaching either would both be an achievement and rather lucrative. 25 of our clubs came out of the hat for this Round and sadly, after seeming to widen the scope in recent years, the FA have returned to severe regionalisation this season with no fewer than nine all-Wessex ties. Why cannot they appreciate and realise that Cup Ties are all about going to different places and playing different Clubs. One accepts that there will be ties involving Clubs from the same League but surely not in the quantity displayed in this draw. The nine all-Wessex Ties in draw order commence with the first time SOLENT UNIVERSITY will appear in the FA Results, as Team Solent entertain PORTLAND in their new name. The make-up of the University side in the opening games of the season is often an unknown quantity and they may find their visitors too strong on the day. COWES SPORTS host LYMINGTON TOWN at Westwood Park and may need to improve on last season’s form to progress while Town’s near neighbours BROCKENHURST entertain a slightly unknown quality in Premier Division new boys AFC STONEHAM. There is something of a local derby at Western Way with two of last season’s relegated sides, BEMERTON

HEATH and ANDOVER NEW STREET, in opposition and the home side’s experienced close season signings may prove to be the difference come quarter to five on Saturday. Division One against Premier Division at the By-pass ground where ROMSEY TOWN, so close to promotion last season, meet HAMBLE CLUB and may fancy their chances of causing an upset. AMESBURY TOWN, back in the Premier Division after a season’s absence, take on CHRISTCHURCH, who took a long time to adjust to the higher level last season, and the tie could easily go either way. Not quite a local derby, but close to same, at the County Ground with BASHLEY visiting HAMWORTHY UNITED and home advantage could be the key

between two well matched sides. HYTHE & DIBDEN, third in last season’s Division One, have an early test of their promotion credentials with a trip to AFC PORTCHESTER, who will be fancied to do well this time round, and again home advantage may hold sway. Lastly in this section a game that really could go either way as ALRESFORD TOWN host BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS in what, locally, could be one of the ties of the round. The above means that seven Sydenhams Clubs face “foreign” opposition, four at home and three having to travel. SHAFTESBURY entertain Combined Counties side Knaphill who are based near Woking and finished in mid table in the Combined Counties Premier Division. That represents a lengthy journey for the visitors whilst another Combined Counties side, Farnham Town, who finished fourth in Division One, travel perhaps ten miles to take on Sydenhams new boys FLEET TOWN who should surely be too strong and go through to the next round. It’s Combined Counties again who provide the opposition for BOURNEMOUTH and another lengthy journey as Frimley Green, near Camberley, go to Victoria Park. After a successful appeal to the FA Frimley were promoted to the Premier Division for this season but one suspects that Bournemouth will have the superior firepower. The last of the Wessex/Combined Counties ties is at Five Heads Park where HORNDEAN face Camberley from the lower half of the Premier Division and, as with Bournemouth, the home side should be too strong. TADLEY CALLEVA will be fully aware of the capabilities of their opposition when they visit Sholing while US PORTSMOUTH journey to Binfield near Wokingham. The home side were in ninth spot in the Hellenic League last season and can be a difficult proposition on their own ground. Finally, the draw has not perhaps been kind to FAREHAM TOWN who cross over to Wiltshire to meet a Westbury side who finished in the top five in the Western League last season and will provide a strong test for the “Creeksiders”. Just in case you’ve forgotten, the draw looks like this (starting next weekend!)

CLUB NEWS

The stand at Bemerton Heath Harlequins has been spruced up and named in honour of long standing Chair Steve Slade, Steve has been with the club some 30 years, and amongst others helped to literally build the present complex and this naming is in recognition of his efforts for the club over those years. We were very sad to hear of the passing of Keith Hill at the beginning of the week. Well known locally for his support of Bashley he passed away peacefully on Monday 29th July 2019, at Oakhaven Hospice after an 18 month battle with pancreatic cancer. On behalf of the League our thoughts and condolences are with family and friends at this very sad time. A celebration of the life of Keith Hill will take place on Thursday 15th August 2019 at 13:00 at Bournemouth Crematorium, Strouden Avenue, Bournemouth, BH8 9HX; then to Bashley Football Club for refreshments. It’s been requested that everyone wear football shirts, if not then jazzy/colourful ties and women in colourful tops/dresses - no black. Family flowers only. Several clubs have been active in the player registrations in the final days before the start of the season. Hamble Club collecting the signatures of Cowes Sports striker John McKie and, from Chichester City, another forward in the shape of Sam Ndlovu being two such pieces of activity, whilst in the north of our patch, Andover Town have signed brothers Tom Pattison in midfield and Adam Pattison at the back amongst others. AFC Portchester have signed goalkeeper Brad Snelling who was with Blackfield & Langley last season.

MATCH REPORTS

Gary Day writes FAWLEY 1-1 DOWNTON THE new season got under way with Friday night football in the Premier Division at Hamble and in Division 1 at Fawley AFC, the latter match was chosen on a bright early August evening. Both sides attempted to take the early initiative, but this didn’t materialise although a Daniel Telfer free-kick for the Robins produced a smart low save from Oilers keeper Jamie Bruce to prevent the ball from finding the bottom corner. A league first occurred on 26 minutes when Fawley’s Reece Macey achieved the ‘dubious honour’ of being its first player to receive a ‘temporary suspension’ from a game (more widely and crudely described as a ‘sin bin’), which is now given for dissent to officials at this level. The ‘bin’ was actually his own dug out and he was able to resume playing following a ‘ten-minute sit out’. (Oh, in case you wonder, a call was made to an attendee at Hamble – no such decision was necessary in the first half there!). Back to the action and Fawley’s Lewis Connors fired a firm thirty-yarder that crashed off the Downton bar and over. Close to half-time Harry Crisp of Downton shot just over the bar. So, no goals at the break. HT 0-0 There was a great start to the second half as Adam FRENCH received the ball fully thirty yards out and let fly with an absolute ‘belter’ which beat the valiant dive of visiting keeper Ernest Osei (who did well to get near it) and flashed inside the post. A goal of the season contender without a doubt! Fawley almost added to their lead shortly after when Shaun Prentice seized on some sloppy play in defence, fed Dylan Knight who, in turn, found Peter Southwick whose effort brought a save from Osei. Downton levelled on 67 minutes when TELFER had another free-kick opportunity and, this time success, as his nicely placed 25-yard effort drifted inside the post. Late on, free-kicks taken by MacLeod of Fawley, and another by Telfer came close and Downton’s Diego Romero sent a fine pass down the right where Larbi Lawrence crossed but Thomas Moseley failed to control in the middle and the ball was cleared. FT 1-1 Honours even … about right … one more ‘sin bin’ (Downton’s Prentice) … both teams now with a point on the board. One game down and just 37 more to play! Roger Allen writes HAMBLE CLUB 1-1 CHRISTCHURCH THERE was something faintly religious about this opening fixture as the Priory visited the Monks and if the rumour about the renaming of Hamble’s ground is true, it was played at The Abbey Stadium. However all thoughts of goodwill disappeared in the first few seconds as Hamble’s captain, Mike Byrne, was yellow carded for a meaty challenge by the excellent Andy Dunn. The first chance of the night came in the 5th minute when Billy Walker fed Luke Stone down the right and Max Willcock tried a cute flick when a firmer effort might have produced a better result.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

The game settled into a midfield battle of attrition with defences on top and very few chances created. For all that it was an entertaining game with Christchurch shading the first half. However it was Hamble that came closest to scoring in the dying moments of the first half. A Liam Crook free kick found the head of Nathan Lynch but his effort was clawed away by Lewis Gunstone-Gray making his league debut in the Christchurch goal. HT 0-0 All the talk at half time was about the use of a sin bin but in this game, it proved totally redundant as two well-disciplined sides remained fully committed whilst dissent and foul language took a day off. The first goal finally came on the hour. A Christchurch defender unwisely went to ground which allowed LYNCH to gain a yard of space, turn and rifle a low cross shot into the far corner. Christchurch continued to build up pressure on the Hamble defence and both Stone and Willcock had shots beaten away by Rory Anderson in the home goal. The equaliser came with 6 minutes to go as Stone chased a through ball only to be beaten to it by Anderson rushing out of his area to clear. However his rushed clearance fell to WILLCOCK 40 yards out. His lobbed effort looked to be going over but it was measured to perfection, even avoiding the defender back on the line. This was very much a deserved equaliser for Christchurch who probably took more out of the game than the home team. However all in all an enjoyable game for the neutral spectator FT 1-1 Roger Allen writes RINGWOOD TOWN 4-1 EAST COWES VICTORIA IT took some time for the home side to exert their dominance in this game but, with three goals in the last 15 minutes they ran out deserved winners by a comfortable margin. It seemed only a matter of time before Ringwood scored as they had all the early play. East Cowes resorted to just hacking the ball clear leaving their lone forward to chase around in hopeless pursuit as Ringwood built attack after attack. Ben Harris was just wide with an early shot then Ryan Hamm shot straight at keeper Steinborn-Busse when well placed. The Island side were indebted to their keeper on several occasions and he was their best player by a distance. Ringwood continued to waste chances, Hamm again the culprit as he headed into the keeper’s hands from point blank range and Joe Manley hit the side netting from a narrow angle. Just when it looked as though East Cowes might get to the interval on level terms, they fell behind on 42 minutes to a left foot free kick from full back Tommy HUGHES which evaded the keeper and came down over the line from the underside of the bar. Hughes is probably better known for past exploits with Horndean and Petersfield and these days on the cabaret circuit but he still has a mean left foot which was ultimately the biggest factor in settling the game. HT 1-0 Something must have been said at half time because East Cowes did more in the first 5 minutes of the second period that they did in all the first. Joe Butcher shot just wide and Elias Ahmed had a shot blocked at the expense of a corner. And they were back on level terms on 58 minutes as a long ball from Harrison Catania led to a foot race between AHMED and Ringwood keeper Nick Harvey which the East Cowes player won running the ball past the keeper into the empty net. That was East Cowes’ last moment of glory as the home side took control in the last quarter hour. First on 76 minutes Hughes struck a long cross field ball to Manley, the other full back, whose cut back allowed HAMM to fire high into the roof of the net. Seven minutes later a corner by Jordan Coltman was just too high for Steinborn-Busse to hold and HAMM again pounced to volley into the net. Finally on 83 minutes after a fierce Hughes’ shot was palmed away by the keeper, a near post corner by Ryan Osman was flicked home by substitute Jack BARTON. Ringwood were good value for their win but they know there is harder opposition to come. However with their next two opponents being sides that were heavily beaten in their first game, there is an opportunity to gain confidence by getting off to a fast start. FT 4-1

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

Mike Robins writes BASHLEY 0-0 FLEET TOWN FLEET marked their return to our League scratching out a goalless draw in the New Forest in a game which the hosts should perhaps have won handsomely given the number of chances they had that, with a rub of the green, would have been converted on another day. The first opportunity to score fell to Conor Whiteley testing Fleet’s custodian Luke Williams with a shot from distance with less than five minutes on the clock, but it was the visitors who posed the bigger threats in the early stages as the home defence frequently gave away the ball in dangerous areas but the new boys couldn’t capitalise on the errors. 21 minutes in and a timely challenge from Brad Morris denied a chance for Fleet and a fierce drive from Fleet’s Taylor Watts was gratefully clasped by keeper Ollie Bull in the Bashley goal at the Clubhouse end of the ground. Bashley’s Ollie Smith had a great chance on the half hour latching on to a spilled ball only to see the Fleet keeper redeem himself with a quick recovery to hold his follow up. Back at the other end a Brad Wilson shot from some 22 yards was tipped away and an Atkinson effort hit the crossbar from the ensuing corner. Further chances were wasted at both ends as the half ended. HT 0-0 The hosts resumed in a lively fashion with a Harry McGrath shot diverted away for a corner. Just after the hour mark Bashley were awarded a penalty for a hand ball but Strickland could only strike the crossbar with the effort. Newcomer Ollie Smith dragged an effort wide shortly afterwards and at the other end Atkinson cleared a goal bound Whiteley strike with a timely goal line clearance. Slack possession was the ultimate downfall of the hosts who could perhaps consider themselves unlucky with several second half chances that went without reward. FT 0-0 John Gorman writes HYTHE & DIBDEN 3-2 WHITCHURCH UNITED BASED on last season’s table and form this presented itself as a likely home win and so it proved but it was never easy for the home side and it was the final fifteen minutes before Hythe ensured the three points and their winning goal was the first time they had been ahead in the game. Both sides tried to play possession football from the start and there were occasional hair raising occurrences in both penalty areas but both should be praised rather than criticised for their attitude. The first action of note saw home goalkeeper Josh Cotton, playing against a former Club, forced to hold a cross at full stretch before at the other end Ryan Long sent Rory Wood to the bye-line but the cross was overhit. The next visiting attack bought better fortune as Whitchurch went in front after just nine minutes. Long and Wood chased a through ball deep into the home area, the defence failed to clear, and Corey CHERRETT scrambled the ball over the line. Thompson then sent another effort across the face of goal before the scores were level within three minutes. Sam Floyd’s strength won the ball in midfield, with his pass releasing Rich Bridle who was crowded out on the edge of the area, the ball ran loose and Filippos TERZIDIS swept it high into the roof of the net.

Konrad Szymaniak then produced the safe of the afternoon in tipping a Cain Prentice header over the bar before clutching a Sam Woodward header under the angle of post and bar. Whitchurch had two efforts blocked in a goalmouth scramble but then should have gone back in front. Nick Yeomans sent Long clear and with all expecting a shot the striker squared the ball across the area only for Thompson to side foot it the wrong side of the post. Hythe’s

Connor Wells denied Thompson with a saving tackle before Whitchurch had the ball in the net again but to no avail, Cotton dropped a simple cross under no pressure and in the ensuing scramble Long forced the ball over the line but the Assistant’s flag was raised, presumably for offside. The same player then hit the post – again offside - before the half ended on an unsavoury note with a crunching tackle on Corey Cherrett by Bridle that earned the home player a yellow card that on another day could have been red. HT 1-1 Cherrett was replaced by Keiron Fuller on the re-start and the visitors promptly missed another chance similar to that in the first half. Thompson pulled the ball back, Long’s dummy threw the defence but Wood went for power rather than placement and was way too high. They then had a let off at the other end when Prentice fastened on to a Crookes through ball and fired across Szymaniak only to see the ball hit the inside of the post and rebound into the keepers arms. Rather against the laws of geometry! Cotton saved with his feet in a scramble and confidently clutched the resulting corner before turning an effort by Aaron Randall past the post. Fuller’s time on the pitch was sadly short and none too sweet as he appeared to catch his studs in the turf and went down clutching his knee and obviously in pain. He left on a stretcher and we can but trust the injury is not too serious. Cotton had to leave his area to head clear and Crookes fired straight at the keeper after a powerful run. The home side wasted a free kick in a dangerous position before the game entered its final fifteen minutes with a goal that put the visitors back in front. Wood broke clear, was bought down from behind and there was little protest at either the penalty or the yellow card for Wells. YEOMANS converted the spot kick and an upset suddenly looked on the cards. But Hythe and especially Cain PRENTICE had other ideas as twice in the space of four minutes the striker fastened on to through balls and confidently beat the advancing keeper to give his side the points. Hythe will know they were perhaps fortunate and Whitchurch will probably feel hard done by but they did miss two golden chances and having gone in front were twice caught square in defence. Hythe took the three points and Whitchurch can build on a fine display from an enjoyable game, free of dissent and well refereed – one rather silly caution aside. FT 3-2

LEAGUE NEWS

For at least the third time “Full Time” has randomly changed the primary contact for around half the clubs which means that the notifications sent out recently could have the wrong primary contact assigned. These have been changed back again but this is something totally outside our control and we cannot tell when nor how it is happening. If you spot that it has happened again, could you let the Fixtures Secretary or me know. It would appear that another change has been made to Full Time in that clubs now can't open the match statistics page without entering the referees marks, yet these are collated through MOAS not Full Time. However until we can speak to The F.A. on Monday and so as not to delay the display of our match stats, can we ask you to complete the marks in Full Time as well as MOAS this weekend. Once again, we can only apologise for this extra work from changes that we were not aware of. IMPORTANT- Can I also remind clubs of the need to include the match attendance in the SMS reply text.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

WEEK ONE ROUND UP

A new season, a lot of goals and some very impressive attendances and thanks to all Clubs for supplying the latter. The following observations are based on last season’s League position and results but with changes of Managers and personnel many teams will have altered over the course of the close season. The weekend started with two matches, one in each Division, on Friday night and both ended in one all draws. In the Premier Division Nathan Lynch put Hamble Club in front – the first of no doubt many goals for the big striker in the season – with Christchurch claiming a deserved equaliser six minutes from time. An enjoyable and well refereed game with minimal signs of dissent and an attendance close to one hundred and seventy. At Fawley the home side’s Adam French had the honour of scoring the first goal in either division for the season when he put his side ahead on the stroke of half time only for Downton, who seemingly had amended the Rules by naming seven Substitutes, to equalise twenty minutes after the break. Fawley also “claimed” the first sin bin of the season but we will spare the offender’s blushes. On to Saturday and no joy for the three sides who finished closest to Sholing last season. Horndean went down two one at home to Lymington – both the winner’s goals coming from Micky Finch – and Bournemouth were held to a one all draw at Fareham with both goals coming in the dying minutes of the first half. Something of a surprise at Chestnut Avenue as AFC Stoneham marked their first game at the higher level with an impressive four one victory over Portland helped by two goals from Matt Bainbridge. No problems for Baffins Milton Rovers however as they welcomed Amesbury back to the topflight with a five goal win at Bonnymead Park. The long serving duo of Jason Parish and Tyler Moret both scored twice. Goals at Test Park as well as Hamworthy United defeated Solent University 7-1 with hattricks from Dan Cann and Cameron Beard. Not the start the home club would have wished for in their new name and possibly the worse defeat they have suffered in their Wessex League tenure. (I am sure this will be corrected if proved to be incorrect!) Two more sides among the goals were AFC Portchester and Brockenhurst who both recorded 4-0 wins. Dan Wooden scored twice in the formers defeat of Shaftesbury and there were four difference scorers on the “Badgers” scoresheet following their victory over Tadley, the losers with a considerably changed side from last season. At the other end of the scale so to speak the largest crowd of the day, 202, at Bashley witnessed a goalless draw as they renewed rivalry with old foes Fleet Town who will be happy with that start to their season. Lastly in the Division Cowes made the long journey to Alresford but returned home two goals to the worse as the home side look to improve on the last campaign. Bemerton celebrated their first ever game in Division One with the highest score of the day in an 8-1 defeat of New Milton. Justin Bennett notched a hat trick, Eddie Perrett and Danny Finnigan scored twice and Kane O’Keefe completed the scoring – all four players new acquisitions. Varying fortunes for the two Clubs who narrowly missed out on promotion last time round. Hythe & Dibden were matched all the way by Whitchurch before coming out on top by the odd goal in five – two late goals from Cain Prentice proving decisive – but Romsey went down four nil at home to the much improved Follands who made up for the heavy defeat suffered in the same fixture last season. New boys Pewsey vale suffered something of a baptism of fire at Alton going down five one with the long serving Scott Sanderson one of the scorers for the home side and a convincing start to the season for Ringwood, who memory suggests, took ages to get going last season with a 4-1 defeat of East Cowes Vics – two late goals for Ryan Hamm. Andover New Street and US Portsmouth shared two goals and the points at Charlton while a mile down the road there was a winning start for Andover Town with a 2-0 defeat of Totton & Eling. Petersfield crossed the County to Wiltshire and will be happy with a 2-2 draw at Laverstock & Ford but Newport completed a bad day for the Island Clubs, going down 2-1 to Verwood in their first game at Whippingham. A Connor Kelly penalty gave the Port the lead but the visitors recovered to take the points. One game played for all, thirty seven to go and Hamworthy and Bemerton lead the (very) embryonic League tables. Thanks to all for the attendances and 98.7% of the goalscorers.
