In the early hours of the morning, when the mist lays heavy over the valley, petals of pink roses are collected to produce the world’s favourite perfumery ingredient.

The famous Valley of the Roses is located in Central Bulgaria between the Balkan mountains and the Sredna Gora mountain. This region has been the motherland of the Rosa damanscena.miller species for over 300 years.

Rose Absolute is vibrant and rich in its sweet floral aroma and Sydney Essential Oil Co.’s supply partner, Enio Bonchev Productions Ltd., is the master of its production. Second to none, this impressive aromatic is the centrepiece in any oil collection.

Ancient CivilisationsHistory tells us that deeply perfumed Rose has been utilised for thousands of years by many different civilisations, as far back as Ancient Mesopotamia in 3500BC.

Ancient Egyptians heralded rose for its healing and aphrodisiac properties and incorporated an oily extract in beauty balms. It was believed that decorating burial tombs with the flower petals maintained a powerful link between their world and the afterlife.

Isis, the goddess of love was symbolised by the flower and many Egyptian artworks include the rose alongside her depiction. Famously, Cleopatra added roses to her milk baths and also filled her room with the scented petals in order to create an aromatic connection with Marc Anthony.

The Roman Empire was also passionate about the sweet aroma and recognised its antibacterial properties. Rose water was used to fill the Emperor’s fountains and also to scent public bath houses. The flower petals were used to adorn temples and statues of their gods. It even appears in Greco-Roman mythology where Aphrodite uses rose oil to embalm the body of Prince Hector. >

Clockwise from top: many of the harvesters are local villagers who have been tending to the roses for years. Bags of rose petals are weighed to ensure tallies are calculated correctly. From the fields, the flowers are taken to the Enio Bonchev facility to be processed into absolute, essential oil and hydrosol. Each flower is handpicked with care.

Valley of the RosesNative to the Middle East, Rosa damascena.miller was introduced to Bulgaria in the early 15th Century. It is thought that it was first cultivated by Turkish settlers who founded the Kazanlak region, now famous for its rose production.

The region’s climate is extremely suited to growing the pink rose species as the valley offers optimal temperature control whilst the mountains protect from unfavourable weather fronts that can come from the north.

Rose fields are planted by hand in November each year. The rows of bushes are spaced evenly to allow for uninhibited growth. It takes approximately 2 to 3 years for the plant to reach maturity and to be included in the harvesting cycle. With a maximum life span of 10 years, each valuable plant is maintained with the utmost of care.

The annual harvest commences mid-May and continues for around 45 days until the end of June. Each day at 5am, harvesters start hand picking the delicate blossoms when the plant contains the most morning dew. It is important for the petals to be moist and fresh as this ensures they contain the most aromatic material.

An average picker can collect up to 40 kilograms of rose flowers before mid-morning when the temperature increases and picking stops for the day.

Enio Bonchev enjoys a strong working relationship with many seasonal workers who travel to the valley each year for the rose harvest. Their labour force includes local villagers, transient gypsies and permanent members of staff that all benefit from social programs such as dental care and food provisions, in addition to their daily wages.

Harvested rose flowers are transported to Enio Bonchev’s nearby facility where the petals are sorted for different production >

Clockwise from top: the flowers are picked early in the morning before the temperature rises and moisture levels begin to decrease. Enio Bonchev’s seal is applied once the oil has passed their quality assurance tests. The production facility is a short distance from the Valley of the Roses in the village of Tarnichene. Rose absolute has a deep orange colour and is fluid at room temperature. It easily blends with essential oils and carrier oils.

methods. Certified Organic plant material is sent for distillation to produce oil and hydrosol and conventional flowers are used for oil and absolutes.

Through the solvent extraction method approximately 350 kilograms of fresh rose flowers are required to produce 1 kilogram of rose concrete. This concrete is further processed to remove all traces of the solvent and produce our highly aromatic absolute.

Highly Aromatic Rose AbsoluteThe scent of rose is synonymous with love and it is one of the most popular aromas in the world. From high end cosmetics, to international perfumery houses, its demand is never ending and it is impossible to deny its appeal.

With an exquisite floral note and a bright orange colour, Rose Absolute is an impressive addition to natural skincare products. It is suitable for all skin types, especially mature, dry or sensitive complexions. It offers toning and soothing benefits whilst also helping to minimise redness and can even help reduce the appearance of spider veins.

When used in aromatherapy treatments, rose can help support the female body and balance emotional instability. It instills feelings of positivity and love whilst also easing stress and nervousness. It can help improve circulation but is noted as being contraindicated for pregnancy so it is advisable to consult a professional aromatherapist for recommendations.

Rose Absolute’s rich indulgent scent is perfect to blend with Bergamot, Neroli or Jasmine so is ideal for an opulent natural perfume. We know you will fall in love with it! 1

citrus top note and will dissipate in

intensity over time so it is important to

consider the percentage used when

formulating.

The uplifting properties of the oil make

it the perfect choice for blends that

alleviate stress and promote positivity. It is

a great all round oil that would suit

creams, body butters and lotions as well as

body wash and cleansing products.

NEW CARRIER OILS

Watermelon Seed Refined oil

Watermelon Seed is a light weight

emollient oil that leaves the skin feeling

soft and smooth. Expeller pressed from

the sun-dried seeds of the Citrullus lanatus

fruit, the oil contains high levels of linoleic

and oleic fatty acids. Refined to remove

excess colour and odour, it is an extremely

stable oil with a good shelf life.

It is easily absorbed and can help

improve skin elasticity. Whilst it is suitable

for use with all skin types, it is especially

useful for oily skin as the fatty acids remove

excess sebum resulting in a cleansed skin

appearance. It helps to unclog pores and

provides a restorative action.

The neutral nature of the oil is perfect

for baby formulations as it has very

low odour and pale colour.

When combined with similar carrier oils

such as camellia and sunflower you will

achieve excellent results in massage, balms

or lotions. Haircare products will also

benefit from the inclusion of Watermelon

Seed oil as it is highly nourishing without

leaving a greasy residue.

Wheatgerm Refined oil

Rich in Vitamins A and E, Wheatgerm oil is

an excellent ingredient for natural skin

care products. It is cold pressed from the

small germ found inside the Triticum

vulgare wheat kernel. Refining processes

ensure the oil has a pleasant, mild nutty

aroma and soft yellow colour.

It is recognised for its high anti-oxidant

content and is popular in anti-ageing

formulations to help minimise fine lines

and wrinkles. It offers a nourishing

emollient effect on the skin and is

particularly useful for dry or cracked skin

conditions.

When incorporated into cream

formulations, it provides a rich, luxurious

feel and will help improve skin tone and

suppleness. Whilst Wheatgerm oil is

suitable for use in massage applications it

would be most effective when blended

with other oils that offer greater slip to

maximise the benefits of the treatment. >

NEW ESSENTIAL OILS

Hinoki oil (Japan)

100% Pure Essential Oils

Conventional

The fresh, slightly spicy aroma of

Hinoki oil will lift your olfactory system

to new heights. Reminiscent of pine

needles in a cypress forest, the clean

aromatic note envelopes your senses and

creates a calm awareness, that grounds

you in the present.

Hinoki oil is steam distilled from the

wood of the Chamaecyparis obtusa tree.

The evergreen conifer can grow up

to 35 metres in height and approximately

1 metre in trunk diameter. It has silvery

brown bark and dark bluish green leaves

that sprout from irregular branches.

The chemical constituents found in

the essential oil are similar to that of

cypress and it is known for its balancing

effect on the mind and body. It has

traditionally been used in purification

rituals in Shinto religious ceremonies

and today is incorporated in

aromatherapy, perfumery and natural

skincare products.

Recognised for its relaxation properties,

Hinoki oil is suitable for use in massage

applications and would be an ideal

addition to bath oils to help reduce

muscular tension. It can even be included

in a chest balm or inhalation blend

to help ward off cold and flu symptoms.

originated in China. It was introduced to

Japan around 900AD and quickly became

an extremely popular plant in Japanese

cuisine. The fruit is used to make ponzu,

vinegar, alcohol and can be mixed with

honey to use in tea.

For wellbeing, the fruit is utilised in

for maintaining a healthy body. It is said

obtained from the seeds of the Babassu

palm tree. Native to Brazil, the Orbignya

Oleifera seeds contain approximately 50%

oil and when mechanically pressed this oil

is refined and presents as a soft butter

consistency.

It is an excellent emollient ingredient,

with outstanding skin softening

properties. It penetrates deeply and offers

quality slip when incorporated in massage

balms. A key function of Babassu Butter is

its anti-foaming ability which makes it a

perfect natural substitute for the popular

synthetic ingredient, dimethicone.

Buddhawood CO2 is extracted from the

Eremophila mitchellii species and the oil

soluble liquid is an excellent alternative to

Rosewood or Sandalwood. It has a sweet,

honey-like aroma and a dark reddish

colour. In perfumery or essential oil blends

it offers a delightful middle to base note

that resonates well with citrus and floral

tones. It can be used as a natural fixative

in perfume blends or skincare products to

help intensify the overall scent profile.

It is said to offer strong anti-bacterial

properties so would be perfect for use in

hand and body wash products. It also acts

as a natural insect repellent making it

ideal for aloe gels or body spritzers in

warm tropical climates.

Siberian Fir CO2 extract

The rich, fresh, crisp aroma of Siberian

Fir CO2 extract is extremely appealing

and will hold an impressive position

amongst your aromatic ingredients.

Extracted from the needles of the

Abies sibirica tree, the oil soluble liquid

has a deep red brown colour and

fluid consistency.

A natural deodorant, it is a great

choice for men’s body products and can

help tone the skin. When Siberian Fir

CO2 extract is added to after sport

massage oil formulations, treatment

results can be enhanced as it provides

extra support for the muscular and

circulatory systems.

from the Callitris columellaris F. Muell.

tree and has a warm, woody aroma.

It is a slight viscous oil soluble liquid with

a golden yellow colour and blends

superbly with other Australian native

oils such as Lemon Myrtle or Eucalyptus

Blue Mallee.

It performs well in meditation blends

as it can help ground and centre the

mind whilst promoting relaxation a

properties, it is useful for cleansers

and is a great active aromatic in after

shave products as the scent has a

masculine appeal. 1

What is Certified Organic? When recognising the benefits of Certified Organic products, it is important to understand what it means to be accredited. Farmers, growers and producers that have achieved organic status are known for some key unique features in their farming production methods –

• No synthetic chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers• No exposure to GMOs• Focus on social responsibility • Focus on environmentally sustainable practices including soil

and land health and balanced eco-systems

In Australia, Australian Certified Organic (ACO) is the leading certifying body and has international recognition for adhering to extremely high standards. ACO has an exemplary record and their worldwide network sees compliance with many other countries including United States through USDA/NOP standards, Europe and Taiwan with AQIS, Japan with JAS, International Foundation for Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) based in Germany and more. >

aromatherapists choose certified organicWhy

Essential oil grades can seem complicated when determining which oil will best suit your needs, but if you follow the lead of professional aromatherapists, selecting Certified Organic is the best choice you can make.

To maintain ACO certification, members are subject to thorough annual audits to ensure all practices are continued in a fashion that meets the stringent organic standard. Failure to uphold the standard can lead to disqualification and removal of certification.

Throughout the production cycle of Certified Organic essential oils there is full traceability from source to finished product and each step in the process has its own ACO certification. This strictly controlled sequence ensures the oil is received in its purest form. Certified Organic oils offer the highest level of therapeutic properties as they are closest to their natural state. It is guaranteed that they are 100% pure and natural with no additives whilst also ensuring nothing is stripped from the oil.

When comparing various claims of certification within the essential oil industry it is worthwhile investigating the nature of the accreditation and the organisational body that processes the credentials. It is recommended that certifiers should always be independent of the company or organisation involved in selling or distributing the products to ensure legitimacy of the certificate. ACO is renowned for its integrity, impartiality and authenticity, making it SEOC’s preferred organic certifier.

SEOC’s Wholesale Pricing DifferencePrice comparisons can be misleading when determining which essential oil brand to select. There are many different companies in the market and understanding their pricing structure can provide clarity and also help you save money.

SEOC is a wholesale supplier and as such, we offer products at a lower price than retail. In this instance a lower price does not reflect lower quality oil and in reverse a more expensive retail product does not necessarily equate to better. As a wholesaler, SEOC has far fewer financial overheads. We do not pay sales commissions or agent fees nor do we have subsidiary organisations that we need to support.

When you purchase Certified Organic essential oils from SEOC there is no middle man in the supply chain. In most instances we purchase directly from the grower/producer and on sell immediately to you. This helps to keep the cost of the products down and allows us to offer such competitive pricing.

Trust, Honesty & IntegrityIn a clinic environment, Aromatherapists need to have complete trust in the quality of the essential oils they utilise to treat their clients. They seek products that are 100% pure and natural to ensure they have the maximum therapeutic benefits and provide high level potency.

Certified Organic essential oils meet these needs with their superior aromatic profile and comprehensive constituent content. The transparent nature of the certification guarantees a trustworthy supply chain and secures the integrity of the product. Without independent organic certification the grade of the oil is subject to the seller’s marketing strategy. If an oil has the claim of therapeutic grade, we recommend considering what this actually means. Who is the oil graded by and to what specification? Certified Organic is the ultimate pure grade available in the market.

It is also important to know that there can be seasonal variation with Certified Organic essential oils. As they are the purest form of oil extracted from plant material, they are susceptible to some variation year on year. Harvesting times, climatic changes including temperature, rainfall, sunlight and soil condition all impact the final plant health and subsequently can cause differences to the essential oil scent and constituent chemical analysis. These variations are mostly minimal and very seldom impact the efficacy, and may only be noticeable to professional users of essential oils. 1
