A Comprehensive Training System

With thirteen orchestras and ensembles, each musician

will be matched to the appropriate group for their level of

skill, experience and age. Connecting all ensembles is the

Orchestral Training Framework, a comprehensive system

ensuring that students progress through the orchestras,

developing individual and ensemble skills under the careful

guidance of SYO’s artistic staff.

Outstanding Artistic Staff

SYO conductors are experienced educators, inspiring their

musicians in weekly rehearsals. They are drawn from the

leading orchestral education programs across the sector, and

foster strong connections with their orchestra members.

Furthermore, a team of SYO tutors, drawn from professional

ensembles such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra,

Australian Chamber Orchestra and Australian Opera and

Ballet Orchestra, work with each orchestra several times

each term, providing small group mentoring and specialist

instrumental guidance.

These concerts provide performance

opportunities for all orchestras at a range of

venues throughout Sydney, demonstrating each

orchestra’s achievements at the end of the term.

Toddlers’ Proms

Toddlers’ Proms introduce audiences to

the instruments, sounds and sections of an

orchestra, and provide the SYO Philharmonic,

Symphonic Wind Orchestra and Peter Seymour

Orchestra with performance experience in front

of an enthusiastic and responsive audience.

Special Events

SYO orchestras are frequently invited to

participate in a range of special events including

Carols in the Domain, Sydney International

Sydney Youth Orchestra

As the leading ensemble of SYO, Sydney Youth

Orchestra is where the state’s most talented

young musicans are to be found. Led by

acclaimed conductor and SYO Artistic Director

Alexander Briger, the SYO program provides

training and performance activities that lead to

the continued development of each musician’s

technical and artistic excellence.

Peter Seymour Orchestra

Under the leadership of the inspiring John

Ockwell, you will have the opportunity to

learn the foundations of orchestral playing

– instrumental technique, ensemble skills,

understanding of style and symphonic form,

sight reading, listening and communication

skills.

SYO Philharmonic

The SYO Philharmonic is a full symphony

orchestra led by acclaimed Australian conductor,

composer and educator, Brian Buggy OAM. You

will learn orchestral technique and ensemble

skills with great works of the 19th and 20th

centuries.

Symphonic Wind Orchestra

Covering a diverse range of repertoire from

popular 20th Century film scores, jazz classics

through to core orchestral repertoire, the SWO

gives players an invaluable opportunity to

experience the excitement of playing in a large

ensemble under the leadership of SYO alumni

and respected music educator, James Pensini.

TangoOz

Led by tango specialist Maggie Ferguson

TangoOz is Australia’s first true tango orchestra

to give young musicians the unique opportunity

to learn and play authentic Argentine tango

music. This promises to be an exciting year for

TangoOz, as they will be touring to Buenos Aires

and Montevideo in July 2016! Será grandioso!

Percussion Ensembles

This exciting initiative is in collaboration

with Synergy Percussion, Sydney’s leading

percussion ensemble. SYO percussionists

receive specialist training with Synergy and are

then placed in the orchestra that needs them for

the relevant concerts or rehearsals.

STRINGORCHESTRALPROGRAMWith a structured program and great music,

the String Orchestral Program offers a place

to develop ensemble skills, sight reading, aural

awareness as well as general string technique, all

presented in a fun environment. Young musicians

from Year 2 to Year 10 are welcome in the String

Orchestral Program – you will be placed in the

ensemble to which you are most suited.

Speer Orchestra

The Speer Orchestra is a very special group

where many young players gain their first

ensemble experience. This ensemble offers an

invaluable opportunity to play with other like-

minded children and form friendships.

John Hopkins

The John Hopkins Orchestra builds on the

concepts introduced in the Speer Orchestra

and consolidates ensemble skills. It focuses

on refining the orchestral sound and invites

the players to begin thinking more musically,

with the introduction of some more complex

rhythmic and tonal ideas.

Camerata Vibrata and Cameratissimo

The Camerata ensembles build on the

foundation of ensemble playing developed in the

Speer and John Hopkins Orchestras with more

focus on developing the skills required to sight

read and play repertoire with more complex

rhythms and keys alongside awareness of style

and expression.

Chamber Strings

The Chamber Strings offers intermediate

players the chance to further develop their

ensemble playing while extending their technical

and aural skills. Young musicians will discover an

exciting and engaging range of more challenging

repertoire.

Sinfonietta

The Sinfonietta is the advanced string ensemble

in the String Orchestral Program and is the

springboard to the Peter Seymour Orchestra.

Sinfonietta players receive invaluable

opportunities to explore challenging string

orchestral repertoire and to refine their

ensemble skills.

Which orchestra is right for me?

With 13 orchestras and ensembles in the SYO

family, it is necessary to audition, so that you

are placed in the right orchestra. For existing

SYO members, talk with your conductor if you

are unsure which group you should apply for.

For new applicants, refer to the orchestra

descriptions on the SYO website, and feel free to

ring us on 02 9251 2422 to discuss.

Commitment

With over 600 people auditioning for limited

and highly sought-after places each year, it is a

significant achievement to be offered a position

in an SYO orchestra. Successful auditionees

must commit to their orchestra for the whole

year. Members are occasionally required to

participate in extra rehearsals or workshops

outside scheduled rehearsal times.

Auditions Seminar Day

On 29 August 12-1pm at St Mary’s Cathedral

College, Chapter Hall, current and prospective

members are invited to attend a seminar for the

orchestra they intend to audition.

This is a great opportunity to hear what the

audition panels are looking for, and to learn how

to prepare for the audition. Full details about

the Auditions Seminar Day will be sent with your

application confirmation.

AUDITIONSApplicants

Applicants must be amateur players and be

aged 24 years or younger on 31 December

2015 regularly studying with a professional

instrumental teacher.

Audition Requirements

Every new applicant and existing SYO member

must audition.

You are required to perform a prepared piece,

orchestral excerpts, and sight read. Full details

will be sent to you upon application. Auditions

will be 5-7 minutes in length.

A non-refundable audition fee is payable with

your application. For new members the fee is

$60 and for existing SYO members the fee

is $50. If you wish to audition on multiple

instruments, separate applications and audition

fees will apply for each audition.

Most SYO orchestras have an expectation of

a minimum of two years membership before

progressing to a more senior orchestra.

Late Auditions

Late auditions are scheduled for students

unable to attend the October/early November

sessions due to HSC or other compulsory

commitments. Late auditions will be held 15,

21 and 22 November. Please indicate on your
