SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

This subject is intended to introduce the concepts of “business” to students. In this course students will be introduced to definitions and concepts related to business, environments that affect business, and various types of business organization. Furthermore, in this course students will be introduced to various business functions in corporations such as Human Resource, Operations, Marketing and Finance. This subject applies holistic approach whereby business organization is placed as an entity that needs to understand and manage environmental influences, and then choose a form of business ownership, management system and organization structure suitable with business environment where they operate.

SUBJECT OBJECTIVES

After taking this subject, students are expected to be able to: Explain the meaning of business, various forms of business organizations, and elements of

business environment Explain basic principles of business functions, which includes: general business

management, human resource management, marketing management, financial management, and operations management.

In Term of cognitive skills, by studying this subject, the students are expected to develop the following abilities: Understanding and comprehending concepts and theories underlying business practice Analysis and to synthesis of different ideas and theories in the business management prac-

tice Creative and the critical thinking about management business practice

In addition, the students are expected to improve the following skills: analytical skills presentation skills communication skills writing skills team work skills goal setting skills time management skills self confidence problem solving skills

Teaching methods implemented: (1) Lecturing (2) Problem/ topic discussion with the lecturer. The method consists of the lecturer gives students a topic from and guides them in conducting a self-learning process beforehand. Students should prepare themselves with materials from books, articles, newspapers, financial statements, etc., to understand the case.

In class, the students explore the topic and to be active in the discussions about the topic. Participation (both quality and quantity) is important and contribute as part of the grade. The lecturer acts as a facilitator who is responsible to guide the discussion.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT

Students are to be divided into groups of two or three. In groups, students are to prepare a short presentation (maximum duration approximately 1 hour, including discussion). The presentation will cover:

1. Review of the topics discussed in each session2. One short case (complete with analysis) related to companies/business in Indonesia.

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

Individually, students are expected to write an essay (with length of main body of the essay between 2500 and 3000 words—no penalty if exceeding 3000 words). Remember, forewords, cover sheets and attachments are not counted. The essay must cover an Indonesian business entity (a company, cooperative, or any form of business ownership). The business entity must be discussed based on at least any two aspects/topics covered in the class sessions.

The essay due on the FINAL EXAM SESSION. Penalty below will be enforced for every essay submitted after FINAL EXAM SESSION. Submit hardcopy to IUC Secretariate and also send the softcopy through email to your lecturer.

Penalty on late submission and non submission:Students submitting essay after the aforementioned due date shall receive penalty of 50% reduction on essay mark. Students not submitting the essay by Final Exam will receive 0 (zero) mark for the essay assignment.

LECTURER POLICY Students are expected to be actively participating in the class discussion.

Referring to the faculty regulation, the Program requires students to fulfill a minimum attendance of 80% to be eligible for the final exam. Thus, students should attend a minimum 8 out of 10 lecturing sessions.

EXAMINATION REGULATION

1. Students may use non-programmable calculators only. 2. Students may use the dictionary provided by the program only. Students should notify

their exam supervisor(s) if they need it. 3. Students should not conduct any act of cheating during the examination. Students will

automatically be graded E for the subject if they are caught cheating during the examination of the respective subject. In addition, students will be graded E for all other subjects taken during the particular semester, whose examinations have taken place prior to the cheated examination.

4. Deferred examination is only applicable if it is requested in written by the Program.

ORIGINALITY

Students should maintain originality and respect intellectual property rights. Therefore, students should avoid conducting any act of plagiarism when doing written assignments (if any), which may take a form of short individual / group paper and / or summary.

The followings are acts of plagiarism: Copying paragraphs, sentences, a single sentence, or even a significant part of a sen-

tence directly without enclosing them in quotation marks and appropriately footnoted; Using and / or developing other’s ideas found in printed materials or film elsewhere

without explicitly referencing them to the respective author or the source of the idea.

Plagiarism is a serious infringement of intellectual property rights. Any assignment that contains presumed plagiarism will be marked 0 (zero).

Since students are required to write group papers, students should sign a Statement of Authorship and attach it to their papers before paper submission. The form of Statement of Authorship is available at the Resource Center of the Program. Lecturer(s) and / or tutor(s) will refuse to mark any paper that has no signed Statement of Authorship attached.

In addition, students should ask for cover sheet from the Resource Center of the Program for any assignment submitted.
