DirectedOceanographicResearchXASNS325(4credits)CourseCatalogDescription(max.40words):Designandconductoriginaloceanographicresearch.Collectdataandanalyzesamples.Compileresultsinpeer-reviewedmanuscriptformatandshareduringoralorposterpresentationsession.Emphasisondevelopmentofresearchskillsandwritten/oralcommunicationabilities.Instructor(s):SeaEducationAssociationOceanographyFacultyLocation:SEAcampusinWoodsHole,MAandaboardSEAsailingschoolvesselatsea.Prerequisites:AdmissiontoSEASemester.Threelabsciencecourses(oneatthe300-levelorhigher)orconsentofinstructor.CoursePhilosophyandApproach:ResearchtopicsappropriatetothePIPAscientificfocusandcruisetrackhavebeenidentifiedpriortothiscourse.Duringtheinitialtwo-weekshorecomponent,studentresearchteamswillselectatopicanddevelopabriefresearchproposal(IntroductionandMethods)fortheirscientificproject.AcriticaleducationalgoaloftheDirectedOceanographicResearchcourseisthetransferof“whatsoundedgoodonshore”to“whatreallyworksatsea,”andtheevolutionofthesescientificprojectstotherealworldwilloccupymuchofourtimewhileunderway.StudentswillcompletetheiroceanographicresearchprojectsundertheguidanceoftheChiefScientistaboardthevessel.Essentialprojectcomponentsincludethecollection,analysisandpresentationofdata;aformalscientificmanuscriptwillbewrittenpertheguidelinesofaselectedhighimpactscientificjournal.Eachsubmissionwillalsobesubjecttopeer-reviewbyfacultyandfellowstudents.Thiscourseconsistsof10discussion/mentoringsessions(1.5hourseach),andaminimumof42hoursofsupervisedlaboratorywatchparticipation(activelearning/laboratory)across~36underwaydaysatsea.LearningOutcomes:
1. Demonstrateabilitytocriticallyanalyzeandinterpretauthenticoceanographicdata.2. Demonstrateabilitytogenerateclearvisualrepresentationsofoceanographicdata.3. Composeaprofessional-qualitymanuscript.Evaluation:

Assignments:
ResearchProposal:Abriefresearchproposal(IntroductionandMethods)willbepreparedduringtheinitialtwo-weekshorecomponent.Revisionswillbenecessarybasedonmethodtestingatsea.
DataDiscussions:TwoDataDiscussionSessionswillguidetheprogressofdataanalysis.Forthefirstsession,researchteamswillberequiredtoretrieverelevantdatafromcurrentcruisearchivesandplotstationlocations.Forthesecondsession,researchteamswillgeneratetwofiguresthatbegintoaddressthehypothesisbeingtested.
DraftResults:ResearchteamswilldraftaResultssectionfortheirfinalmanuscript,includingtext,figure,andcaptions.
Manuscript:Researchteamswillproduceawrittenmanuscriptfollowingguidelinesforaselectedhighimpactjournal.Thereisanexpectationofseniorthesis/professionalqualitywork.ThefinalmanuscriptswillbearchivedatSEA.
Peer-Review:Eachmanuscriptsubmissionwillbereviewedbythreeanonymousstudentreviewerswhowillmakesuggestionsandrecommendationsforpublication.ExpectationsandRequirements:
• Punctualattendanceisrequiredateveryclassmeeting.• Activeparticipationonwatchandinclassdiscussionisexpected.• Lateassignmentsubmissionsarenotaccepted.• Thepolicyonacademicaccuracy,quotedbelow,willbestrictlyfollowedinthisclass.
Thepapersthatyousubmitinthiscourseareexpectedtobeyouroriginalwork.Youmusttakecaretodistinguishyourownideasandknowledgefromwordingorsubstantiveinformationthatyouderivefromoneofyoursources.Theterm“sources”includesnotonlypublishedprimaryandsecondarymaterial,butalsoinformationandopinionsgaineddirectlyfromotherpeopleandtextthatyoucutandpastefromanysiteontheInternet.Theresponsibilityforlearningtheproperformsofcitationlieswithyou.Quotationsmustbeplacedproperlywithinquotationmarksandmustbecitedfully.Inaddition,allparaphrasedmaterialmustbeacknowledgedcompletely.Wheneverideasorfactsarederivedfromyourreadingandresearch,thesourcesmustbeindicated.(HarvardHandbookforStudents,305)
