SYLLABUS FOR AR 100: ART APPRECIATION Fall, 2008 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This illustrated lecture course will help the student find personal meaning in original works of art. Students will develop a better understanding of the nature and validity of art by studying the fundamentals of art and art history from prehistoric civilizations to art of the twentieth century. Emphasis is on the diversity of form and content in all works. The final goal is for students to recognize master works of art, understand the basic development of art, and discuss art using the correct vocabulary. TEXTBOOK: UNDERSTANDING ART by Lois Fichner-Rathus, 7th Edition. PREREQUISITES: N/A COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Each student is expected to read the text chapters and develop comprehensive lecture notes from the class lectures and handouts. Test items will come from the text, class lectures, and supplemental handouts. TESTING: There will be a total of five exams. Tests may consist of the following: Slide identification, True-False, Matching, Multiple Choice and Discussion. Tests will fall into the natural break following each section identified in your Syllabus Schedule. Students will be notified of an exam at least one week prior to the exam. Exam Study Guides will be available one week before. There will be NO make-up exams. GRADING: Your final grade will reflect the averaged totals of 5 exams and a completed museum Worksheet. You will also have assignments throughout the semester ranging from art paintings, assigned papers, quizzes and field studies. Your final average will consist of the following: Tests – 40% Quizzes – 10 % Museum Worksheet – 10% Assignments – 20% Art projects – 20%
