1. Title Sylvia Docker Lectureship Guidelines

2. History At the Federal Council meeting of the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists (AAOT) in September 1964, it was decided that the Sylvia Docker lecture be established. The name was selected to honour Miss Sylvia Docker, who established the first training school for Occupational Therapists in Sydney in 1941. The lecture also commemorates the foundation of the AAOT in December 1945. The first lecture was delivered at the 4th Conference of the AAOT in 1966, by Miss Gwendoline Simms, Senior Occupational Therapist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney.

The purpose of the lecture is to encourage occupational therapists in their professional careers and to honour those who have outstanding contributions to occupational therapy.

3. Objects The objects of the lecture are:

• To stimulate research into aspects of education and clinical practice in occupational therapy

• To encourage contribution to the literature of the subjects of education and clinical practice.

4. Scope The presentation of the Sylvia Docker Lecture will be a keynote address at the Occupational Therapy Australia National Conference, and programmed at the discretion of the Conference Management Team.

A period of 45 minutes is allowed for the lecture and presentation of the Sylvia Docker Certificate and gift.

The Sylvia Docker Certificate and gift are to be presented by the Occupational Therapy Australia President at the conclusion of the lecture.

The value of the gift to be presented to the Sylvia Docker Lecturer is to be determined at the time the lecturer is selected.

The purchase of the gift for the Sylvia Docker Lecturer is the responsibility of the Executive and the cost to be borne by Occupational Therapy Australia.

5. Expenses for Lecturer Expenses incurred by the Sylvia Docker Lecturer, whilst attending the Conference at which he or she is to deliver the Lecture, shall be the responsibility of the Conference.

Expenses of the lecturer deemed the responsibility of the Conference will be:

• Travel expenses

• Accommodation during the Conference if necessary

• Conference fees.

6. Criteria for Selection

• The nominee shall be an Australian resident

• The nominee must have been a continuous member of Occupational Therapy Australia for at least five years

• The nominee must have rendered outstanding service to occupational therapy in the fields of education or clinical practice

• The member must have contributed to the growth of Occupational Therapy Australia.

7. Procedures for receiving nominations

• Occupational Therapy Australia will call for nominations in May 2020

• The Call for nominations will go out to all members via OT Today.

• Nominations will be provided through completing the nominations form and providing a supporting biography and CV which should outline the education, employment, and membership history with OTA and other relevant organisations. Other attachments will include a list of the past three years of publications and the last five years of research.

8. Selection of Lecturer The Selection Committee will comprise all Board Members. In the event of a board member being nominated, those nominees will withdraw from the Selection Committee.

The application for each nominee will be circulated to Board members and a decision will be made.

The announcement of the Sylvia Docker lecturer will be made as part of the communications plan of the National Conference
