Period 4

Although a common literature canon would provide a universal foundation for all incoming college scholars, teachers should be encouraged to augment the national curriculum with literary works of their own choosing to enhance the learning of students. Across the nation, high school students vary in background, race, religion, and economic and social status; to factor these differences into creating a complete national English curriculum would be impracticable. Timeless works such as Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men, and To Kill a Mockingbird should be featured in an anthology used in English classes across the nation; however, teachers should select ancillary works designed to correspond with their students and not rely solely on the standard curriculum (Source C). In this way, the defined national English curriculum enables high school students to find common ground in college, while also enabling additional literary enrichment designed for each student.
