Syracuse University is located in Syracuse, New York, in the heart of New York State. The region is commonly referred to as Central New York (CNY). CNY is within easy driving distance of New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Toronto, and Montreal. Relaxing in the CNY area means enjoying lakes and rivers, mountains and countryside, arts and culture, and spectator sports—all within easy reach. Head northeast to the Adirondacks, a four-season destination for vacations, day trips and weekend getaways. Travel south to four major ski areas or north to the picturesque towns and sparkling waters of the Thousand Islands. West of Syracuse, the Finger Lakes beckon with more than 100 wineries strung along their shores. East of Syracuse, are Cooperstown and Glimmerglass, magnets for baseball and opera fans. Lake Ontario is an hour away, offering beaches, boating, and salmon and steelhead fishing.

In addition to scenic getaways, history buffs can discover CNY’s long tradition of supporting equal rights. Visit the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn, and the Women’s Rights National Park, just miles away in Seneca Falls. Throughout the area, you can learn about The Haudenosaunee Six Nations, the first residents of New York, whose rich cultural legacy continues to inspire current and future generations.

CNN Money ranked Syracuse as the major U.S. city with the most affordable housing and the Brookings Institution named it one of the top 20 metropolitan areas. Syracuse is a great place to live, work, play, and raise a family. There are a myriad of quality schools, both public and private.

One of the more distinctive features of Syracuse’s skyline is the white roof of the Syracuse University Carrier Dome, the only domed stadium of its kind in the Northeast United States or on any college campus in the country. The 50,000-seat dome gives a huge home-team advantage to the school’s basketball, football, and lacrosse teams and plays host to major concerts and community events.

Spring through fall, CNY hosts countless festivals, concerts, and cultural events. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the diverse music, theater, and art scene. Every summer Syracuse hosts the Syracuse Jazz Festival, which has included such artists as Kenny G., Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Wynton Marsalis, Natalie Cole, Dave Brubeck, and Ray Charles.

One thing Central New York residents love is the variety of dining options in each neighborhood. Whether you go for fine or informal dining, there’s something to satisfy every appetite, from vegetarian, to Thai, to blues-inspired barbeque.
