Words From CO and XOCadet Lieutenant Zachary Jobe and Cadet Lieutenant

Junior Grade Charlie Loyack

“Cadet Orientation is fast approaching, so let’s all be at our best and recruit as many new NS1’s as possible. Remember to set the best example for all the new cadets joining our unit. We are looking forward to meeting our future leaders as the incoming freshman join our program. We believe that this school year will be one of the best as long everyone in the unit stays devoted to this program. Welcome to the unit all incoming freshman!”

Commander’s First Year Chief Petty Officer Amanda LaTorre

Commander Erickson started teaching at Cary High School approximately one year ago. Commander described his first year at Cary as, “an exciting experience and I am very proud of the progress our unit has made since I arrived.” “In the future I would like to see more cadet involvement, be more competitive, add more teams, and bring more focus onto teams such as Cyberpatriot and Seaperch. For the upcoming school year, I am looking forward to having the opportunity to bring in new NS1’s into the unit, trips such as Pisgah and Parris Island, and a possible trip to NYC for Fleet Week.

I would like to see more cadets being involved in the unit and for them to take more initiative when things need to be done. There is a lot of untapped talent in the unit and I don’t want to see it go to waste. I expect for the upcoming staff to be competent, to take the initiative, and to talk to their predecessor about any concerns with taking over the billet. The qualities I looked at to select the new staff members were their involvement in the unit, their aptitude for the job, and how they fit in within the other staff members. I handle conflict in the unit by urging the cadets to act professional by putting their personal issues aside, handling the issue in the lowest level so it doesn’t have to affect the unit, and if I need to intervene, I will, to come to a solution. The thing I like best about working at Cary is the people and the community. The advice I would give to all the cadets would be to get involved, even if its coming to a Coffee House once a semester, get involved. I would like to see the unit being cadet led, the cadets to be more active in general and in decision making, and for cadets to take more initiative.” ~Commander Gregory Erickson

Why Recruiting and NJROTC Is ImportantCadet Ensign Timothy Phillips

Recruiting is a very important aspect of our NJROTC unit at The Cary High School. The Recruiting Billet helps recruit future cadets, helps to make sure every cadet knows their options through being in our unit, and tries to get cadets more involved in our unit. Being in the NJROTC unit will help you in all future endeavors, such as, helping your job resume look better, possibly getting college scholarships, and by setting your college application apart from others. Without recruiting many cadets in our unit today wouldn’t be where they are now. Anyone can be apart of the recruiting billet, all you have to do is talk to your friends about joining and how it will benefit them. Recruiting also, helps cadets get involved in our units teams. In our unit we have a total of eight different teams: Drill, Athletics, Academics, Orienteering, Color Guard, Cyber Patriot, Marksmanship, SeaPearch, and Sail Team. I hope to help all the incoming freshman find their passion within the unit this upcoming year, because it will be a great one. Leadership AcademyCadet Petty Officer Second Class Larissa Weiner-Nichols

The Cary High School NJROTC chose four cadets over the summer to attend Leadership Academy located in the Citadel, South Carolina. The four Cadets chosen were Cadet CPO Cody Broughton, Cadet CPO Brandon Castano, Cadet CPO Donavin Davis, and Cadet Ensign Shane Conley. These four cadets trained twice a week for 2 months. They were put in stressful situations but they all pushed through and never gave up. Leadership Academy helped all four cadets become more confident and helped them develop even greater leadership skills than they had before attending the 6 day Academy. All four cadets speak very highly of their experience and recommend if you have a chance to go to Leadership Academy to take it. Cadet Chief Petty Officer Cody Broughton said, “To be a leader, you need to realize that not everything needs your direct control; it is imperative that you break things up and divide authority to your subordinates to achieve the best results possible.” Cadet Ensign Shane Conley said, “Anyone can do the right thing when it benefits them but, a good leader does the right thing and expects nothing in return.”

Sail AcademyCadet Ensign Daniel Free

Over the summer the Cary High School NJROTC, sent two cadets to the NJROTC Sail Academy in Charleston, South Carolina. The five day camp teaches cadets that are new to sailing the basics and help them build confidence on the water. This does not mean the academy is only for new sailors, amateurs and pros alike are welcome to the Academy and everyone has an opportunity to enrich their sailing and leadership skills. Approximately 70 cadets from schools all over North and South Carolina are chosen to attend the Academy. Only about 10 of those 70 cadets are invited back to attend as Cadres (instructors). My personal experience as a Cadre is one I will always remember. At Sail Academy, you make lifelong friends and memories. You also, learn skills that can benefit you in sailing, but mostly in life. Teamwork and having good communication skills is a huge aspect of Sail Academy. The job of Cadre is to instill those things into the cadets and to make sure they feel confident in everything they do while attending the Academy. For any cadets interested in learning how to sail I highly recommend attending Sail Academy, it will be an amazing experience.

What Is Drill?Cadet Ensign Laura Piccione

Drill Team is one of the many teams our NJROTC unit has to offer. Drill is the act of marching and performing stationary movements. Drill takes discipline, teamwork, and dedication. Drill is like a sport, with all the hard work the cadets put in comes great reward. Participating in drill has personally taught me how to be a better leader. Drill is a way for cadets to work together to create a team and to make great friends. I hope that our Drill Team grows stronger together and becomes the best we can possibly be. By joining the Drill Team you will be able to travel to Drill Meets with us all over South Carolina, compete in different drill competitions, and learn different drill routines. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at: [email protected]

Come Join The Color Guard TeamCadet Chief Petty Officer Donavin Davis

A Color Guard is a formal ceremony that is performed at events such as home Varsity Football Games, Dog Shows, our annual NJROTC Military Ball, Graduation Ceremonies, and other in and out of school events. We also, compete in Color Guard events at Drill Competitions all over North and South Carolina to win. A Color Guard consists of four positions: Left Rifleman, Organization Color Bearer, National Color Bearer, and Right Rifleman (listed from left to right). In order to get Color Guard qualified you must have basic knowledge of drill, go through at least a week of training, take a test, and perform all the movements you have learned without any problems. The training you will acquire will allow you to perform all the Color Guard movements adequately. Once you are qualified you will be issued a set of Service Dress Blues (SDBs) and you will be eligible to sign up for Color Guard events in the back of the NJROTC classroom. Participating in several Color Guards will make you eligible for a Color Guard Ribbon. Color Guard is a great way for you to extend your knowledge of drill. Come Join The Marksmanship Team Cadet Ensign Andrew Evans and Cadet Chief Petty Officer Cody

Broughton

Are you interested in learning and practicing competitive rifle shooting? If so, you should join The Cary High School NJROTC’s Marksmanship Team. Only a small selected group of cadets are able to compete in sanctioned air-rifle meets all over North and South Carolina against other NJROTC units. In previous years we have qualified, competed, and placed in the prestigious Area Six Championship. Throughout the school year we practice at the nearby VFW building once or twice a week after school. To join the Marksmanship Team you must pass a safety test with a perfect score before you are able to learn how to safely shoot an air-rifle. What Is The Athletics Team?Cadet Ensign Shane Conley

The Athletics Team in our NJROTC unit has the main purpose of strengthening the cadets both physically and mentally. Attending practices will prepare cadets for competitions we participate in all over North and South Carolina. The practices can vary greatly in difficulty but if you put in the work the results will show. Most practices will consist of physical training, which are calisthenic exercises focused around strengthening a cadets upper body strength, lower body strength, balance, mobility, and cardiovascular endurance. Some practices will be based around team building to teach cadets the importance of leadership, selflessness, and camaraderie. The Athletics Team is not exclusive to only fit cadets, everyone is welcome to come to the practices. The team values hard work and offers many ways for cadets to get fit and to get answers to questions they have about fitness. The Athletics Team mostly competes in the athletic events at drill meets. The athletic events consist of; pushups, situps, 100 meter relay, and 200 meter relay. Athletic Practices leading up to these competitions will be based around these events. Also, joining the Athletics Team does not mean you will have to compete in competitions. At the end of every semester every cadet taking a NJROTC class will take the Physical Readiness Test (PRT), which consists of pushups, situps, and a one mile run. The best way for a cadet to have the best time possible is to get fully prepared by showing up to Athletics Practice. So, if you are looking for a physical challenge, or help improving your fitness routine come and join the Athletics Team. All You Need To Know About The SeaPerch TeamCadet Petty Officer Third Class Sameer Mehta

The Cary High School NJROTC SeaPerch Team is an innovative underwater robotics program where our cadets build a Remotely Operated Vehicle that will be raced against other schools throughout the year in selected pool areas. The cadets will be using pipe, hardware tools, etc. in a classroom with adult supervision. The team will be split into two equal groups to build two separate ROV’s. This will inspire teamwork throughout both teams and will help them develop good communication skills. Cadets with any questions about the team please feel free to contact me at: [email protected]
