Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

Last Thursday and Friday, we celebrated 2 important days in the church, the Feast of All Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls. The two days are meant to be celebrated as one ‘great’ feast.

On Sunday, October 14th, I was privileged to be in Rome at the canonization of Archbishop Romero. There were approximately 70,000 in attendance. The Rite of Canonization is very moving. At the beginning of the Mass, after the introductory rite, the traditional Veni Creator Spiritus is sung. Right after, a short biography of each of the 7 new saints was read (in Italian), and the Pope is petitioned to canonize the new saints. The traditional Litany of the Saints is sung, the Pope then reads the Canonization Prayer, all of which is followed by the singing of the Te Deum. It was most curious to see someone officially proclaimed a saint by the church. Although the Mass was celebrated in Latin and Italian, the Mass was so prayerful and moving that one could feel the presence of God’s Holy Spirit in the gathering. There is a richness in Catholic Ritual.

During my brief time in Rome, there was an important clarification made about Archbishop Romero. The conventional story about Óscar Romero goes like this: Soon after he became archbishop, a right-wing death squad killed a priest friend of his, Fr. Rutilio Grande. Romero — until then a staunch conservative — experienced a dramatic, indeed life-changing, conversion. This conventional story is gravely mistaken. Romero himself rejected it, as did those who knew him best.

What had happened? Romero had changed during an extended stay, in the mid-'70s, far from the capital city. In the early '70s, as an auxiliary bishop in San Salvador, he was seen as highly conservative; that was the period when he drew the ire of the priests who were so upset by the news of his appointment as archbishop. But in 1974, he was named bishop of the rural diocese of Santiago de María. There, he drew close to farmworkers and catechists who were targeted on a regular basis by the military. What he saw there, led him to a major shift in outlook. Romero was appalled by the suffering inflicted on itinerant farm-workers — often entire families, including spouses and children — who came to the area to work in the coffee harvest. They would routinely be kidnapped, tortured and killed. Romero vocally condemned the practice of workers being "handed over, alone and defenseless, to the inhumanity of owners.” For that reason, he became a target.

Surely the killing of Romero’s friend Grande, was painful for Romero, given how close they were, but it was not the "miracle" that some insist it was. Romero wasn't "suddenly … transformed" or "converted"; his change was a process that had been going on for several years before Grande's murder. Indeed it was the whole experience that left him a changed man. He was clearly the Good Shepherd who never abandoned his people.

I offer this simply as a clarification as to how the conversion of Archbishop Romero took place. Over the course of the next month, I’ll offer just a few reflections on the other newly canonized saints. It would do us well to ask for their special intercession during this month of November.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

El jueves y viernes pasado, celebramos dos días importantes en la iglesia, la Solemnidad de Todos los Santos y la Conmemoración de Todos los Fieles Difuntos. Se supone que los dos días sean celebrados como una “gran” fiesta.

El domingo, 14 de octubre, yo tuve el privilegio de estar en Roma para la canonización del Arzobispo Romero. Asistieron aproximadamente 70,000 personas. El Rito de Canonización es muy conmovedor. Al comienzo de la misa, después del rito de introducción, se canta el tradicional Veni Creator Spiritus. Inmediatamente después, una corta biografía de cada uno de los 7 nuevos santos fue leída (en italiano), y se le pide al papa que canonice a los santos nuevos. La tradicional Letanía de los Santos es cantada, el papa entonces lee la Oración de Canonización, todo esto seguido por el canto del Te Deum. Fue muy curioso ver a alguien oficialmente proclamado como un santo por la iglesia. Ascension Men’s Shelter News

The Ascension-Holy Trinity Men’s Respite Shelter was re-cently recognized with gratitude for being open 83 nights during the 2017-18 shelter season. This is a ministry that provides a warm bed, hot meal, and friendship to guests from two of our community partners on Saturday and Sunday nights. It is a place where all volunteers are wel-come. Thus far this season we have hosted 16 nights and 208 guests. For the month of November we invite parish-ioners to donate new men’s socks for our guests. During these cold, rainy months keeping feet clean and dry is challenging. Your gift of all types of men’s socks: boot, dress, athletic, diabetic, work etc; are deeply appreciated. Drop off new socks for the shelter in the church office. New and returning volunteers are invited to sign up to serve at the shelter. On Thursday, November 22nd we celebrate Thanksgiving. We continue our custom of asking parishioners to bring in canned foods or non-perishable goods on Thanksgiving Day. We do this in order to replenish our Food Pantry that distributes food on the 4th Saturday of each month. Since we do give out food now on a monthly basis, we go through food rather quick. No food donation is too small -- even a couple of cans of soup can be a tremendous help. Thank you for your support. El jueves, 22 de noviembre, celebramos el Dia de Acción de Gracias.
