4

O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Please be seated.

FIRST READING Acts 10:34–43

Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 118:1–2, 14–19

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures for ever.2 Let Israel now proclaim, “His mercy endures for ever.” 14 The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. 15 There is a sound of exultation and victory in the tents of the righteous:16 “The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! the right hand of the Lord is exalted! the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!”17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord has punished me sorely, but he did not hand me over to death.19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them I will offer thanks to the Lord.

SECOND READING Colossians 3:1–4

Since you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

The Word of the LordThanks be to God.

HYMN • 210 vv. 1 and 3 The day of resurrection! Ellacombe

The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad;the Passover of gladness, the Passover of God.From death to life eternal, from earth unto the sky,our Christ hath brought us over with hymns of victory.

Now let the heavens be joyful, let earth her song begin, the round world keep high triumph, and all that is therein;let all things seen and unseen their notes together blend, for Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 28:1–10

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ This is my message for you.” So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON The Rev. Dr. R. Leigh Spruill

Please stand, as you are able, for the Creed.

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

Page 6: T D of The ResuRRecTion easTeR Day › worship › watch...The Day of the Resurrection: Easter Day April 12, 2020 | 10:00am. 4 O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten

by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE, FORM III BCP, p. 387

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress;

Give to the departed eternal rest;Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

We pray for all who are affected by coronavirus, either through illness or isolation or anxiety, that they may find relief and recovery. You are invited to add your own intercessions and thanksgivings, either silently or aloud.

Silence is kept.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer B BCP, p. 367

The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; but chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The life I live in the bo dy- I live by

faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Him self- for me.

The people sing Holy, holy, holy (Hymnal S128) Mathias

Please kneel or remain standing, as you are able.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Daily Noonday Prayers Join your clergy each day at noon (Monday through Friday) for noonday prayers. This 10-minute service is composed of scripture reading, prayers, and a short biblical reflection. Worship with us online at stgeorgesnashville.org/watch.

We Want to Pray for You During our noonday services we want to pray for you, our parishioners, by name during this extraordinary time in the life of St. George’s and the world. If you do NOT want the names of you and your family members spoken during the service (first names ONLY) we simply ask that you email Catherine Beemer at [email protected] to let us know. Join us at stgeorgesnashville.org/watch for the noonday services.

How to Use the Book of Common Prayer We have heard from many of you during the last two weeks that you would like to use this time to draw closer to the Lord. The Rev. David Barr will teach us how to use the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) in this four part series of short videos. The BCP is an ordered way of moving through the scriptures in prayer. It shows you how to become a Christian for the long haul. The first two sessions are available now and the last two are coming soon. Tune in at stgeorgesnashville.org/watch.

Care + Connect Team Volunteers and staff members will be calling parishioners over the next weeks to check in and see how you are doing. In the meantime, if you have immediate needs, please let us know and we will help. If you would like to help with this volunteer calling effort, email Catherine Beemer at [email protected] or Martha Rodes at [email protected]. Let’s all do our best to care for one another and stay connected.

Tornado Relief for Buena Vista Elementary School St. George’s is still working closely with Buena Vista Elementary School (BVES) to make sure that families are receiving adequate recovery resources for those impacted by the tornado and the Coronavirus. With the $14,000 raised over the past few weeks through our special offering, our outreach team is working together with leaders at BVES to put together a mini-grant program to reach families in the greatest need. Thank you so much for your generous offering! Unfortunately, the BVES food pantry is currently empty. Please drop off non-perishable food donations for the Buena Vista community at the church office doors between 8:00am and 12:00pm each day at your discretion if you’d like to help. Email the Rev. David Barr with any questions at [email protected]

Calling All Seamstresses! Dust off your sewing machines! We’re excited to join Robin, Sara, and Erin Puryear in their Missions Mask Ministry making and distributing much-needed masks to our medical community. These are made to specifications provided by Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. While they can’t take the place of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), these masks can be crucial to caregivers in our current setting. For details and to volunteer, please contact Robin at [email protected] or text 615-485-2215. Directions to make masks can be found at https://www.vumc.org/coronavirus/how-donate-hand-sewn-face-masks.

Read the Bible Together Our Bible reading plan organizes the lectionary readings into a pattern of daily readings and provides a way for parishioners to deepen their knowledge of the Bible, prepare for Sunday worship, and become more familiar with the enduring themes of the church calendar. To receive a weekly email message from clergy, join the Bible Reading Plan group in Realm or contact Rebecca Teel at [email protected] or 615-385-2150 x 213. ConstruCtion Corner

Work continues on the block walls of Legacy Hall, campus landscaping, and the new parking area. Demolition of portions of the ground floor areas of the kindergarten that will be remodeled have begun along with the erection of structural steel for the second floor expansion of youth and music spaces. Thus far, the construction industry is still considered an essential business by the state and

work has continued. The Parent Company has implemented on site safety policies to minimize risk for workers.

Visit stgeorgesnashville.org/legacy for the latest information about construction.

Stewardship in Times of Crisis St. George’s is continuing to serve our parish and community even while we are not able to be together. We hope you will continue to honor your pledge so that the work of the church can continue through this crisis. Together we will remain a strong, vibrant community. Thank you. If you would like to make a pledge or gift to St. George’s, you can do so anytime. Pledge online at stgeorgesnashville.org/give, via Realm, or you may contact Catherine Beemer, Director of Parish Giving, with your pledge information at [email protected].
