Happy /ew year to all! 6 guess we have moved from the hus far the long dark winter has
produced little snow Dand Eice Commodore angst in terms of ice , snow removal etc.G We have, however, placed the small grey canisters with sandIsalt mix, and a smaller bucket and gloves for spreading at the club entrance and in the gatehouse in case this is needed. K shovel for our deck
Dplastic only pleaseG is inside the entrance and a snow shovel for the pierIdocks is in the shed. Lur snow removal contactors are on standby whenever needed. Mour House and )rounds Committee met on Nanuary Oth to update and prepare proPects for this calendar year and we will provide a full update to members in the next edition of TellTales. QeplaceR
ment of the KRframe roof with Lcean "lue metal to match our clubhouse is scheduled for late Nanuary. "est wishes for a healthy and happy STUT. !
Treasurer’s Report "y Vric van Soeren
>his is my first year as club treasure, and 6 would like to thank the past >reasurer, Xarl Yech, for a thorough briefing, )ail "eattie for providing the administrative support, and the "oard for any background
information 6 need as 6 get up to speed with the financial affairs of the club. >he club starts the /ew Mear in good financial shape. Kll but one of the existing members renewed their membership, and all the people who keep their boats at the club have paid their moorage. >he line of credit that was most recently used to improve C Zock and the breakwater, among other things, has been paid down, and we have a bank balance as of the beginning of STUT of [O\,TTT. While we will want to continue to be careful with club funds, we should have no trouble getting financing for any of the possible dock upgrades currently being considered. 6 look forward to a lively discussion on this and other financial matters, followed by improvements that will benefit all club members. !
Rear Commodore’s Report "y Qon Sturm
>his is one more reminder for everyone to ponder and discuss the various proposals for dredging and dock rebuilding. We are hoping to be prepared for voting on this at the ]ebruary )eneral Yeeting.
Mour vote will be important. ^lease do some thinking ahead of time to enable that meeting to proceed efficiently. >he holidays delayed the survey of our electrical distribution system on the docks. We hope to have it completed this month. 6f you have suggestions or know of electrical problems, please get in touch. Vveryone should be aware that we have a gasoline powered emergency pump on the docks. >he pump and accompanying hoses are stowed in a red box near the Punction of K and C docks. _ook it over when you get a chanceRRRperhaps even before you really /VVZ to. !

Valentine’s Day Skipper’s Choice Potluck Dinner
Sunday • Feb 14th 1800 hours
(beats flowers and candy)
The club experienced a fuel spill on 3ednesday, January 7th. This was caused by a deteriorating fuel tank on one of the boats. The fuel from the tank leaked into the boat’s bilge and once the level reached the bilge pump’s automatic switch, the pump cut in sending the fuel overboard.
The quantity of spill was not that much, however it coated the sea water between the breakwater and C dock, and the smell was evident. Jon Healey, when discovering the diesel slick, took immediate action and purchased absorbent pads and distributed these between the boats. Cxtra absorbent pads are now stored in the pump box located on D dock where C dock runs into it. The offending boat has been identified and the owner has turned his bilge pump off and will be taking action to ensure this does not occur again. This has been a wake-up call for the club and the Board will be purchasing a spill kit for Gust this sort of occurrence. Members are asked to report immediately any evidence of oil or fuel spills within the marina to the 3harfinger. !
Wharfinger’s Report By Hugh Ireddy
It is a pleasure, as we enter a brand new decade, to have four new member families Goin the club. Ilease welcome !incent and Margaret -rgiro, 0yall and 3erry Ruehlen, 7ein8 !ito9ec and

Welcome to the 2010 Cruising Season! We are now well into the New 9ear, and I have an outline for you, of the cruises that you may consider going on:
!pri% 1()1* + ,ontague Har5our 6ruise led by
Scott Chapman and Tanya Dan Ginkel. Scott and Tanya are fairly new members. They are very enthusiastic, and have their eyes set on some possible offshore cruising in the future. Montague is a great place to start off the cruising season with. ,a8 91)9: + ;a5rio%a )9* + ?ound Aa%t Apring 6ruise, led by
Levin and Wendy Dine. Levin and Wendy took us on a wonderful cruise last year, and this year will be similar, but with different venues. It is bound to be a good one! =u%8 Bdates CD!E + Fictoria and HsIuima%t, led
by Harold Brochmann. This is likely to be a fascinating cruise, and knowing Harold, it will be a very well run event. The eOact date will be announced later. DonPt miss it if you are around at the time. AeptK 9:)9> + La%% 6ruise, possibly to Genoa Bay,
led by Kuss Crouse and Susannah Devitt. 9ou will be sure to have fun on this cruise, and it is early enough in the fall that the weather may be in our favour. There we are. I hope you like the cruises we have come up with, and I thank all the great people

who are willing to do the planning and lead the various cruises. It is particularly nice to see some new people leading the cruises and slightly different from what we have had before. On another matter, I trust you all received the poster, put out by the Power R Sail SSuadron, regarding the Boating Course, starting shortly. This is an eOcellent course, and anyone taking it will Sualify for the Pleasure Craft OperatorPs Card TPCOCU. Lynn Clark is the contact person in the Club for this course. I usually finish with an update on my own projects, since people are always asking. Well, the Haida, renamed 0)(#,, is shaping up. I am
currently working on a holding tank installation, and many of you know how complicated that can be. 0)(#,1. dinghy has also been completely refurbished. Xlthough there is still much work to be done, a spring launch of 0)(#, is beginning to
look possible. Xfter 0)(#, is put in the water, I hope to participate
in most of the above cruises. However, if I can not make it for any of them, do not let that stop you from participating. 9ou will be in good hands with all the Cruise Leaders. ! !"#$%& ()*+, -./+01 /+2 3,++45,* 6,/7,8 9,*, :/*0 )5 0., ./*28 ;)+04+0 ;*?4>, )5 @ABA 0) C)+0/

Parting Shots Many local cruisers have passed under this bridge
in their boat or dinghy. The passage links two
harbours starting with “B” and separates two
islands starting with “P”. Am I making it too easy
for you? Consider it a New Year’s present. If you
need more challenge, tell us which harbour we’re
looking into in this shot! All correct answers will
go into the dice roll for a neato keeno prize. Send
your answers to [email protected]

We’re about to take a little break from the wet coast and fly off to Maui, and I’m excited. Last time we were there we landed at Kahalui Airport in a full gale, and the next day we saw the sad results of that wild and windy day. Several cruising boats anchored off the Lahaina shore had run aground (right) and had to be scrapped. Hawaii, with its lack of sheltered harbours and its location out in the middle of a watery nowhere, is one place sailors take their ground tackle very seriously. Seven-to-one scope, unthinkable in some of our tiny, sheltered, local harbours, is de rigeur in more remote Pacific
islands. There’s some kind of fetch out there! Still, a picture like this makes you think. Wintertime or spring refit are opportune occasions to inspect your anchor, rode and windlass and make repairs or replacements. Wishing you all safe anchorages in 2010!

The December contest winner is …
Bill and Janice Harkley won the dice toss from a large number of correct entries that identified our destination as Gorge Harbour on Cortes Island. Many were also able to name Uganda Passage and Shark Spit, home of the famous Full Moon Regatta in August. Congratulations Harkleys! I’ll arrange for your prize when I’m back from holidays in February.
