The Birmingham Central Fire Station was finished in December 1935 at a cost of £157,000. New technology included lights to indicate which machines were to respond to a fire, loud speakers to identify the location of the fire and electronically controlled engine starting and door opening. It also featured the latest 'turntable escape'

which was reputed to be the first of its kind in the country. The fire station closed its doors in 2006 and has been redeveloped for student accommodation.

Symphony Hall is a 2,262 seat concert venue that was officially opened by the Queen in June 1991. It is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and hosts around 270 events a year.

It was completed at a cost of £30 million. The hall's interior is modelled upon the Musikverein in Vienna and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

The National Sea Life Centre is an aquarium with over 60 displays of freshwater and marine life in Brindleyplace. Its one-million-litre ocean tank houses giant green sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks and tropical reef fish, with a

fully transparent underwater tunnel. The building was designed by Sir Norman Foster. Brindleyplace is also home to Royal Bank of Scotland, Orion Media, Ikon Gallery and the Crescent Theatre.

The site covers 17 acres of mixed-use redevelopment on a grand scale - the UK's largest such project.

Birmingham Curzon Street Station (formerly Birmingham Station) was a railway station used by scheduled passenger trains between 1838 and 1854. It was then used for excursions until 1893 and goods traffic until 1966 when it closed. The surviving Grade I listed entrance building was designed by Philip Hardwick and built in 1838 at a cost of £28,000.

It is the world's oldest surviving piece of monumental railway architecture. In 2010, a new Curzon Street Station, partly on the existing site, was proposed as the Birmingham terminus for HS2.

The sun sets on John Madin’s controversial, brutalist-style Birmingham Central Library. It was completed in late 1973 and was Birmingham’s main library until 2013. It has now been demolished to make way for the new

Paradise development which will be fully completed by 2025. The Chamberlain Memorial, which was erected in 1880, will remain.

The University of Birmingham is located in the leafy suburb of Edgbaston. It received its royal charter in 1900 as a successor to Queen's College (founded in 1828 as the Birmingham School of Medicine & Surgery) and Mason Science College (established in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason), making it the first red brick university to

receive an independent royal charter. It is a founding member of both the Russell Group of British research universities and the international network of research universities, Universitas 21.

The JFK Memorial is a memorial mosaic mural to John F. Kennedy, by Kenneth Budd. It was originally erected on St Chad's Circus, outside the Roman Catholic St Chad's Cathedral, in July 1968, at a cost of £5,000.

When the road system was redeveloped in 2007 the mosaic was demolished. Key features, including the heads of some of the main figures, were retrieved and retained by Kenneth Budd's son Oliver.

It was re-created using new materials and the new mosaic was erected in January 2013 on Floodgate Street, Digbeth.

As well as Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market, which has become a huge favourite with both residents and visitors from all over the UK and Europe, there is also the annual makeover of the Bullring Bull.

Each year ‘Bully’ is made up in festive style, in this instance he’s been transformed into Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
